Washington Nanny State Bans Swimming Without a Life Vest

Posted by Dave Blount at June 22, 2011 10:08 AM

King County, Washington — home of moonbat-infested Seattle — has pushed soft tyranny another step closer to the point where we finally wake up and rebel:

People who hope to beat the summer heat by swimming, floating or boating on rivers in King County must wear a life vest or face an $86 fine.

The law is draconian to the last extreme.

It applies to people intertubing [as if an inner tube weren't a floatation device], rafting, using a surfboard, canoe or kayak. Swimmers or people wading more than 5 feet from shore or in water more than 4 feet deep would also have to wear life vests.

Apparently this means having to wear a life vest to go fly fishing. Don't complain; Mommy Government knows best.

Councilcommie Julie Patterson dismisses arguments against the new ordinance as being the same that were used against laws banning smoking in public. When they make forks illegal lest we poke ourselves in the cheek with them, bureaucrats will accuse opponents of the ban of using the same arguments as those who opposed forcing adults to wear a life vest to wade a few feet from the shore.

Coming soon: mandatory life jackets for dogs that might go near the water.
