City Council Takes Control of Backyard Birdfeeders

Posted by Dave Blount at May 12, 2011 6:31 AM

The low-hanging fruit is long gone when it comes to finding new aspects of our lives for bureaucrats to micromanage. In Ohio, Cuyahoga Falls City Council is tightening its fist around backyard birdfeeders. The pretext is a parody of what you would expect:

Councilman Jerry James tells AkronNewsNow.com "There's a lot of seed that comes out on to the bird feeders, and they spill on to the ground, and the seeds that aren't eaten by the birds decay and then some birds will come and get them, and then they end up getting sick and dying."

Unregulated birdfeeders are hurtful to birds. What's the matter, don't you like birds?

James says his proposed ordinance would deal with the maintenance of the bird feeders, making sure that the overflow does not lay down on the ground, decay, and cause a problem.
Jerry James says odor is also a problem from the decaying bird seed.

Funny, the only thing I smell is government grade A BS. Maybe I need to have my nose regulated.

Once again we see that there is literally nothing so picayune that statists won't control it just for the sake of bossing us around.

Subject, like everything else, to bureaucratic micromanagement.
