Jail Time for Buying Fake Designer Merchandise

Posted by Dave Blount at April 27, 2011 6:35 AM

There are so few things left that aren't against the law in New York City that bureauweenies are resorting to jail time for people who buy fake designer merchandise from street vendors:

"We don't want to be known as the place to come to get counterfeit goods," said Councilwoman Margaret Chin, whose Chinatown district is ground zero for counterfeiters.
Under Chin's bill, which is being introduced Thursday, shoppers caught buying any counterfeit product could be jailed or slapped with a fine of $1,000 … Several of Chin's colleagues have expressed support for the bill, and she already has five co-sponsors.

The sellers belong in jail, but the buyers? Imagine finding yourself locked up on Riker's Island between a murderer and an armed robber when all you did was buy your wife a handbag that turned out to have a phony label.

But respect for the law is a small price to pay for achieving the statist dream of a world in which everyone is a criminal and can be treated accordingly.

On a tip from Wiggins.
