Item #3: Progressive Hates Independence Day, Also America

Posted by Gregory of Yardale at July 5, 2010 4:05 AM

What would the Fourth of July have been without at least one prominent progressive denouncing America and everything it stands for?

Progressive editor, blogger, and Air America (Remember those guys?) contributor Matthew Rothschild just wants you to know, he hates patriotism, hates it with all the sanctimonious fury someone who never matured beyond high school can manage.

Nationalism is the egg that hatches fascism.
And patriotism is but the father of nationalism.

Yeah, he's real big on the portentous one-sentence-paragraph, because this pounds home the importance of each thought. At least, that's what you think if you're 15 years old and writing for Rise Up! A Journal of Youth in Revolution!. After 8 - 10 one-sentence paragraphs, he wraps up with a cliche-driven paragraph of 3-4 sentences, as though it were the sum of all previous sentence/paragraphs. In this case, he uses the final para so he can piss and moan that patriotism prevents the USA from combating Manbearpig.

American patriotism has also gotten in the way of solving global warming. Many in the United States, which consumes 25 percent of the world's resources but has just 4 percent of the world's population, believe we have the God-given right to use up all the resources we can. And there is an all-too-common attitude that we don't need to listen to any other countries, or the U.N., or obey any international agreements because we're Americans, and we're better than everybody else.

If his previous articles are any guide, Matthew Rothschild is a one-man parade of progressive left douchebaggery.

He was a big fan of Helen Thomas and mourned her departure. He also considers the the Tea Parties incipiently fascist. Also, racist: "Many of the tea party people... actually despise not big government but "liberal" government, especially one that is led by a black man." He lies awake at night terrified that Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and his Marxist Messiah will be murdered by tea-partiers. But he loves Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, Kevin Jennings and of course Che Guevara. And he never met an Anti-American agitprop movie he didn't like. ("Redacted": Writer/director Brian De Palma's deploys a dazzling display of cinematic and New Media techniques to expose atrocities committed by U.S. soldiers in Iraq.")
