British Nanny Statists Forbid Glass

Airstrip One proves once again that there is no limit to what liberals will forbid in the name of nanny state totalitarianism. The government is now moving to impose plastic cups on pubs, lest people get cut by broken glasses.

Nick Verebelyi has been charged with designing a new receptacle for Britons to drink beer out of that meets with government approval. He affirms that

There's going to be quite a push behind this in terms of the Home Office.

Pub owners are enraged, because they know the public does not want to drink beer out of plastic, and because they can't afford the new expense during a recession. But as Shrillary famously proclaimed, Big Government can't worry about every little undercapitalized business struggling to survive. The important thing is that bureauweenies protect us from ourselves, no matter how much we resent it.

But, there's another reason. Have you ever hoisted a plastic mug, believing it to be a regular, heavy glass one? You typically hoist your adult beverage right over your shoulder and onto the floor. This will DOUBLE beer sales! What are the pub-owners whining about?!?!

Posted by: MoogieP at August 28, 2009 9:54 AM

Easy. Pubs could sell pint glasses to customers with the pub's name on them, then give a discount to people who bring them in for refills.

But wouldn't it harm the environent to put all of those plastic cups in the landfill?

Next up: enforcing plastic cups, cutlery and paper plates at restaurants, followed by enforcing it on private citizens in their own homes. A nanny's work is never done.

Oh, I see - the plastic cups would be reusable. It's still stupid.

If you're too young to drink from a glass mug safely, you're too young to be drinking in a pub.

First, I would do a study to determine how many people end up in emergency rooms due to cut glass injuries sustained in pubs. If this is as insubstantial as I would guess it to be, I think that would kill this idea rather quickly. Second, I'm not sure you can get plastic as clean as glass, thus possibly spreading germs. Third, plastic degrades, while glass does not. Fourth, plastic comes from petroleum, which we are busy using for other things like running cars. Glass comes from sand. I think they should stick to glass.

It's a round-a-bout way of increasing cost of gasoline. By increasing demand (plastic cups), the supply (remaining constant) will be spread thinner and thinner and will cost more... thus wiping out gasoline-powered automobiles.

This paves way for an infrastructure that doesn't exist... at the same time that it destroys the current infrastructure. Remember, they don't understand long-term (destroying current tech without having a suitable replacement), only short-term feel-good ideas.

The communists' must sit around all day long dreaming up ways to ruin EVERYTHING!

I sure wish Odumbo would just hurry up and impose martial law and declare himself "king" so we could get this over with.

Just Based on what Glen has been doing on his show it's obvious thats comming. My guess is that in 2010 when the communists loose in a landslide they will have to declare an emergency and try to keep control. They know Americans are getting wise to their plans and will try to quell the revolt at the balot box.

"I would do a study to determine how many people end up in emergency rooms due to cut glass injuries sustained in pubs."

Even if the number is high, the Darwin Awards serve a useful purpose

Absolute agreement from me. Nanny state can cram it. Who hoes to a ber for healthy reason to begin with? First smokes, now the glasses themselves... who is taking bets on how fast soemone makes a killing on the black-market Imperial Pint Glass?

But, but, but...isn't the horror of plastic against Mother Gaia?

Why can't people just mosey up to the bar with their hands cupped?

Great idea, Dave - or they could just take turns putting their open mouths under tap.

Thisll upset the greens you know how they feel about plastic and especialy styrofoam

Many bars, pubs and restaurants use a product called www.shattergard.com.

Good luck

This is not a stupid idea. It is yet another smart move by the communists and their backers in Britain. The war against the local pub continues to pick up pace. The reds and Common Purpose et al have been imposing burdens and restrictions upon pubs to reduce profitability and to discourage people from from drinking, and worse, gathering there. The pub has been the community hub for a very long time. Pubs are shutting down, and are being replaced by mosques and "Asian"/ethnic community "enrichment" centres.

The communists know what they are doing.

First we've heard of it over here in Britain.

Maybe you should try reading actual newspapers.

You're actually all fairly wide of the mark - the main reason they are pushing this is to stop people being glassed in pubs. Given that on average 80-90% of all casualty admissions in the UK (on weekends) are alcohol related and especially violent behaviour i think the idea is to stop the large numbers of glass related injuries from fights - i don't know how that will stop being being bottled - but then there is a trend toward pouring the contents of the bottle into a plastic cup as well.
The reasons pubs are shutting at record rates is high prices, you can get cheaper booze at the supermarkets and that is where people go when there is a recession. Who are the reds in power?. "new labour" are soft tories with some leftist leanings - there is no socialist government in Britain despite what the daily mail would try and have you believe

Well, duh...

What is it that you don't understand about the term- "nanny state"?

Serendipitous, wot?!

Even better!

Posted by: call-me-dave at August 30, 2009 6:15 PM- "Who are the reds in power?."

The communists in ZanuLabour, the public service, the unions, Quangoes aren't communist enough for you?

Posted by: call-me-dave at August 30, 2009 6:15 PM- "new labour" are soft tories with some leftist leanings"

Quite, comrade. Any opportunist betrayer of the revolution who would refer to themselves as an "ex" communist, is nothing more than a Tory class traitor.

Posted by: call-me-dave at August 30, 2009 6:15 PM- "there is no socialist government in Britain despite what the daily mail would try and have you believe"

Right on, brother. That's what it says in the Guardian, and the Socialist Worker weekly. Anything to the contrary is all lies. Bourgeois, imperialist, racist lies.
