Obama Helps Himself to More Power

The socialist blitzkrieg continues on all fronts. While one hand attempts to nationalize the entire healthcare industry, the other paves the way for a government takeover of whatever company it pleases:

The Obama administration this week will propose the most significant new regulation of the financial industry since the Great Depression …
Under the plan, expected to be released Wednesday, the government would have new powers to seize key companies — such as insurance giant American International Group Inc. — whose failure jeopardizes the financial system.

The plan will also increase federal micromanagement of business. This used to be known as "fascism."

Lawrence Summer's, Comrade Obama's chief economic advisor, explains why measures to cripple business are shoved through when the economy desperately needs a chance to recover:

There are people who believe that the wrong time to reorganize the fire department is while the fire may still be burning. The president has concluded very strongly that that view is wrong. … Experience teaches that once the crisis has passed, the will to reform will pass as well.

This is why FDR imposed economically insane policies that prolonged the Great Depression for a decade. So long as the government keeps the crisis going, it can help itself to the last of our liberties.

The future of freedom is in this punk's hands.

On a tip from nancz.

It's just a regular power grab buffett in D.C., isn't it?

Posted by: GEJ at June 16, 2009 9:40 AM

But don't call him a socialist...

Worse, government control of the financial sector means that financial decisions will be made on a political basis, not an economic basis. You know, like giving mortgages to people who can't repay them because they belong to politically correct minority victim groups. Which is exactly what torpedoed the financial industry in the first place.

" prolonged the Great Depression for a decade."

You folks need to read up. This is entirely incorrect.

Posted by: Anonymous at June 16, 2009 9:46 AM

No, it is entirely correct. The other industrialized countries had pulled out of depression by 1933. FDR's policies prolonged the Depression in the USA far longer.

How so? Explain to me how FDR's policy's ended the depression.

Apparently Anonymous gets his historical perspective from the DNC website...

This is out-and-out ignorance.
Amity Shlaes' recent book, The Forgotten Man clearly and completely describes the factors implemented by the bumbling socialist FDR that kept America's depression going on while the rest of the world began to recover.

Did I say ignorance? I was probably being too kind.

Posted by: Fiberal at June 16, 2009 10:03 AM

Looks that way GEJ.

I'd say the burden of proof is squarely on those who support FDR. FDR's got his way for 8 years and the Depression just kept on going until the war.

Actually i thought fdr was a decent president, and many nations were in a deep recession.

Posted by: Joe Nen at June 16, 2009 10:15 AM

If you don't mind a president exceeding his constitutional authority constantly, then using his newly grabbed power to institute economy killing make-work projects, then, yeah, FDR was OK.

Posted by: forest at June 16, 2009 10:21 AM

FDR's legacy not only doomed eastern Europe to almost half a century of slavery to the soviet union, but has done very long term damage to the US. The seeds of socialism were sewn by him and his cronies, some of whom supported the soviets openly, others covertly.

Social Security is the greatest "pyramid" scam in history and the democrats are still using it to buy votes today. I actually heard an old lady say last November that Obama had to win because that mean old McCain was going to take her social security away.

For the government to completely control the citizens it must first make them completely dependent upon it.

FDR was elitist scum

Well, (Ras)Putin and Hugo Chavez can be proud of their trainee. We have now become "Russia". If this keeps up there are only two destinations - either "USSR" or "France".

The Great Depression was caused by a LOT more than the Stock Market crash. There were social changes as well as natural disasters at work.

For instance; SHARECROPPING was ended by the use of tractors, putting thousands out of work and forcing them out of the homes they rented from the land owners. Farm prices had been down from over-production for years; over-production in durable goods as well as manipulation of the stock market is what caused the crash in the first place. People in mines and factorys often went into debt to the company-owned stores, housing, and services. There were many jobs where people worked for TIPS ONLY.
The natural disasters were caused by drought, mismanagement of land, floods and fires that were often set by out of work farm hands who tried to earn a few bucks as firefighters.
The "make work" programs were not as good as the could have been, but people needed work to pay local taxes so that cities could keep up services, These services were cut in many places because of lost revinue. Lost work ment loss of custom for local businesses. Ect, ect.
It's wrong to say that the rest of the industrial world recovered in 1933; Europe was hurting, too. The only hint of prosperity was in the militeristic countrys who were building their war machines and putting a false front for their enemies.

It's hard to do a detailed analisis of this era, so I suggest that you read "THE AMERICAN HERITAGE HISTORY OF THE 1920s & 1930s". It's detailed, well illistrated, has 13 short biographies and is not boring in the least.

PS: I pray that we're not headed for another "great depression", we could not survive it. We have become to SOFT, PAMPERED and far removed from the "frontier spirit".
We could have our computers, cars and a thousand dollars and our grandparents with just a Model A sedan and thirty bucks could kick our asses!

@ KHarn....

No, not all of the US citizens are soft.

The one thing that the administration does fear, (as per the DHS showing its hand in 'the report') and should, is the millions of citizens who will chew on barbwire and spit bullets to survive.

The rest, well, that is what has been commonly referred to as 'cannon fodder'.
