Oslo Rots Under Moonbattery

How's that commitment to politically correct, multiculti, socialistic, degenerate moonbattery working out for you, Norway?

Visitors to Oslo say they're "shocked" by the sheer numbers of prostitutes, beggars and drug addicts who now sometimes aggressively accost people right in the heart of town, on the capital's parade boulevard Karl Johans Gate.
One visitor from Sweden told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) that he was uncomfortable just walking near the central train station with his children. Another visitor from France expressed dismay that there was so much open solicitation in a city that's supposed to be affluent.
[Erling] Lae [of Oslo's Municipal Executive Board] is distressed and says the situation flies in the face of Norway's image as a prosperous welfare state.

Pules Justice Minister Knut Storberget:

It doesn't help to punish these people, we need to help those who are in such a poor social situation.

Storberget's attitude helps explain why Oslo's crime rate is four times that of New York.

On a tip from Oiao.

It takes a great deal of work to be so far in leftist la-la land that people from Sweden and France feel uncomfortable. Norway isn't even in the EU. I thought that meant they were smarter than this.

Pimps, Hookers and Crack Heads --- OH MY!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at August 27, 2008 7:47 AM

The problem here being that moonbats are incapable of learning from experience.

Conservatives look at this and say "What a mess; stop babying the population with welfare handouts, and at least some of them would pull themselves together."

Liberals/Europeans look at this and say "What a mess - more proof that these people need more benefits/handouts/understanding/handholding/empathy"

Conservatives have their heads up their asses just as much as Liberals do.

White Nationalists are the only people I've come across who "get it".

Another anonytard heard from at 9:05.

I'll bet serious money you'll never see that crime statistic in our so-called news media. Same for the London statistics. America is seen badly through smudged filters put in place by libtards and Marxists. Except for notable exceptions like Washington, D.C. and Detroitistan, the rest of America is way more peaceful and productive than just about anywhere in Europe and has been for a long tme now.

I love your site and read it daily, but in this case I think you're wrong. I was in Oslo 2 years ago, (in the very train station the article describes) and nothing could be further from the truth. We walked the whole city and saw no hookers, no trash, and no crime. Aside from a few (3) Goth kids it was as safe as I've ever felt in a major city. It was dark when we returned to the train station and we saw nothing (aka hookers or criminals) then either. I don't support European Moonbattery, but in this case I've gotta say Oslo was a heck of a nice clean safe city

Shawn, Does time stand still at your behest?

What years were you in Oslo, 1952-53?

Posted by: Menstrual Rainbow at August 27, 2008 11:25 AM

Mileage may vary, but I doubt the story about Oslo's problems with solication are made up. Beggars and homelessness have been endemic in Europe for years--I saw it firsthand in London and France decades ago. Perhaps it has gotten better, but I tend to doubt it.

While I'm glad Shawn had a good experience, the statistics tend to indicate Oslo has some real problems, and no doubt they're growing. The Oslo of 2 years ago may not be the Oslo of today, as libertine cultures with very few laws agains vice end up attracting immigrants who immediately begin to use and abuse the liberal social attitudes of their host country.

Oslo may have been, and may even be, a nice, clean city generally. But history indicates that extended periods of governments and cultures that are open towards drug use and prostitution and soft on crime--and so multi-culturally sensitive they allow and encourage and even subsidize the Balkanization of their own country--end up having problems with unemployment and crime.

However, while no one likes beggars, having hookers all over the place might be seen as a plus for some tourists.

Shawn, a lot can change in two years.

"prosperous welfare state"...?

Isn't that an oxymoron?

Posted by: Henry at August 27, 2008 7:11 PM

Prosperous welfare state need not be an oxymoron if your economy is based on extractive industries, like oil. The Gulf states are all highly dependent on oil for their welfare states to function. Same with Norway: it is a very large oil producer: it's the third largest exporter of oil according to Wikipedia.

You have it right. Norway uses its huge stores of oil to support its welfare. However they were smart enough to invest in several companies around the world with the thought that when the oil runs out, they'll have something to fall back on. HOWEVER, I think they forgot that the world RUNS on oil and when that market crashes so will many others. Being here in Norway, I can tell you that some of them are rather aware of the pitfalls of a welfare as extensive as theirs. Then again, if you go to Norway. They tend to not have lot of choices here and generally push for everyone to be alike. That's what I have gathered so far from being here in this cold country.

Note also that these welfare states are not socialist outside their own borders. The Scandinavians are rigorous free-marketers when it comes to competing with other countries. This has proved more workable than conservatives care to notice, but there's a catch: it only seems to work with homogeneous populations. Immigrants whose loyalty to Scandinavian culture is weaker often break the social contract in greater or lesser ways. Native Scandinavians sharing with others is increasingly seen as a duty rather than a natural response.
