Lions for Lambs Flops

Brian De Palma's unconscionable Redacted isn't the only liberal antiwar movie to bomb recently. Though it didn't push its defeatist message to the point of treason like De Palma's proterrorist propaganda, Lions for Lambs also fell on its face, despite major star power and an advertising blitz.

Variety reports that it probably won't gross $20 million domestically, or more than $60 million worldwide. The only bright side: it cost a mere $35 million to produce, probably because it consisted largely of actors pretentiously jawing at each other. Nonetheless, other costs are involved; the movie could lose up to $25 million.

It has been 20 years since a Tom Cruise movie last grossed under $20 million domestically.

By now audiences are so accustomed to demoralizing leftist swill from Tinseltown, it's doubtful any movie dealing with the war in Iraq could draw an audience.

Sleep aids like Rozerem rendered Lions for Lambs unnecessary.

I'll bet an Audie Murphy like movie in Iraq would do pretty well.

What they overlook when making these movies is that most of the liberal target audience "take a principled stand against copyright fascism" by downloading pirate copies via bittorrent instead of paying to see them.

Kevin has it right - if Hollywood gave us a movie about a 'Sargeant York' of Iraq - it would make a billion bucks. Movies about Americans kicking ass in favor of freedom has always been a box office hit.

Ian, don't knock it. I torrent movies to see if they're crap. Then if they're not I go buy em.

It's way better than any review. :)

I seriously doubt that these producers will learn any lessons from this- they never seem to. Some folks say that Hollywood is about money, but I disagree: just like their trial lawyer buddies, they are about their self-serving Leftist ideology and hedonism first, and money second. They think that the American people are just too stupid to get it, so they keep right on grinding out this tripe in hopes that we will finally see their warped "light".

it's grand to see that good people are keeping their money in tight fists!

we've been boycotting hollywood for quite some time - only one of us (our son) has been to the theater in the last two years and it was to see "beowulf".

i feel extremely blessed if i see a movie i've bought at a yard sale for a dollar and it's horrid, no problem throwing it into the burn barrel out of shame mostly...

p.s. - have NEVER liked tom cruise, never...

They USED to make good anti-war movies, ever see "All Quiet On The Western Front", "The Red Badge Of Courage", or "Wings"? Back then, movie makers didn't try to make the audience hate the solders, instead they made you IDENTIFY and SYMPATHISE with them.
How about this for a movie: a Liberal is sent into combat dispite his attemps at being released from service? After doing some minor heroics in battle, he at last gains a sense of comradery with the other solders and patriotism, but still objects to war in principle.

Sorry mate, if you wanted realism, the liberal draftee would have to hide in a corner and write false reports about atrocities when he's never even been on the field. Either that, or betray his comrades by grenading his CO or deserting to the jihadis.

Why would an anti war liberal sign up for the military in the first place? Other than the obvious one - credentials for use in an anti-war campaign against his own country. Since the US is all volunteer and no one is drafted. There shouldnt be any anti war types left. Besides no CO would want some 5th column traitor like that under him so more than likely he would do whatever it took to make sure he leaves ASAP.

A few years ago , I watched The Plan Nine Companion, a documentary about Ed Wood's Plan Nine From Outer Space. I remember they asked one of the characters (who were all real people who had worked with Wood in some way) what he considered the worst film of all time. "That's easy," he said. "Whatever Meryl Streep's last movie was. In fact, any movie with Meryl Streep in it is the worst film of all time." I wish I could remember who said that.
I disagree with him. I still like The Deer Hunter.
Lions For Lambs could be better than Citizen Kane. I still wouldn't go to see it, because Streep and (ugh!) Cruise are in it.

But when you think about it, these movies are (by and large) NOT being made with the American public in mind...they are being made with foreign audiences in mind. Citizens in other countries will shell out big bucks as they flock to the theaters to see their negative opinions about America confirmed by the self-appointed arbiters of American culture -- who denigrate their own country not only because is it fashionable amongst the leftwing glitterati, but it also makes them rich. (Irony is obviously not in the Hollywood dictionary.)
