Fisherman Arrested For Protecting Bait From Sea Lion

Fisherman Hai Nguyen is sitting in a Newport Beach, California jail after do-gooders saw him defending his bait from a sea lion and ran squealing to the police. He will be arraigned on felony animal cruelty charges for stabbing the aggressive beast with a steak knife.

Bail has been set at $20,000. Hopefully catches have been good, because Nguyen could be fined even more than that, in addition to spending up to a year in prison for behavior that until recently would have been regarded as a sensible reaction.

Sea lions are often at odds with people. In addition to stealing fishermen's bait, they leave massive piles of crap all over docks, keep people up all night with their Al Gore–like bellowings, and leave behind horrific odors. Needless to say, our moonbat authorities side with them against the humans whose taxes pay their generous salaries.

We hear a lot about "nusence animals" and attacks on people. Almost every report contains the phrase "the animal was used to people and had no fear of humans". Now here we have an example of a guy trying to drive the animal off, hopefully instilling fear and a "not your territory" mentality into it and he gets PROSICUTED!

He was not defending himself. He should know that if you drop bait in the water, an animal other than your target might eat it. This is a case of cruelty to animals. As for keeping the sea lions off the docks and preventing them from defecating in areas popular with humans, I would welcome non-lethal and , if necessary, lethal methods.

He stabbed that with a steak knife? Males of the species weigh about 660 lbs, females weigh about 220. Combined with with the thick fur coats and blubber, I am not certain that the brute was even inconvenienced by the the strike.

I agree with you, "d". I surf fish a lot and sometimes here on the east coast, a pelican will steal my bait in mid-air. This is the price one pays for fishing.
Stabbing the sea lion was uncalled for...take the loss and move on down the beach.

as a native of californistan for 40+ years i can tell you that there are SOME people who are raping the waters there. they are afforded "native" rights and take EVERYTHING they catch, never practicing "catch and release".

there once were bountiful lakes, waterways and stretches of ocean where ordinary fishermen could get their "limit" within a short period of time, but THESE PEOPLE take EVERYTHING and then some of the other marine life MUST go after a fisherman's bait.

i'll also say, THESE PEOPLE are of eastern asian descent. just try finding ANY crawdads in the streams of california of late - THEY keep EVERYTHING!

he would have been better off luring the hungry sea lion into his boat, fed him his bait and taken him home, knocked it in the head, butchered it out and put it in his freezer - i should think attacking a creature this large with a steak knife would constitute some sort of base mentality - can you imagine going after an intruder in your house with a spoon?

honestly, i wish they'd string every hmong and laotian on the left coast up for violating the fishing laws that the native californians must abide by. their privileges have gone awry...well, mostly because someone, somewhere, thinks we owe them a little something extra.

"Aggressive Beast"? You mean the one wielding a steak knife and drawing blood? Or the one just looking for a meal?

According to the logic of this er...publication, the fact that animals defecate and vocalise makes them deserving of steak knife attacks. Someone around here has the IQ of a lower animal, and it isn't the Sea Lion.

Wow the moonbats really came outta the woodwork on this one-nothing like an animal to make them all up in arms... Freaks.

And by the way, animals DO NOT have "rights" because they are...er... ANIMALS!! DUH!

Posted by: Chris at July 29, 2007 12:58 PM

In San Francisco there are no pet "owners". The PC term is pet "guardian". So liberals do, in fact, put animals right up there with themselves - as they should; I've never met a liberal who was any better than an animal.

Come on...show a little sense here.

when an animal takes the bait off your hook, you dont stab that animal with a knife in a fit of rage.

Im as conservative as the next guy....well...maybe not as conservative as Chris up there, but jeez.

i guess because i dont live on the left coast and have to deal with sea lions in any situation save the zoo, sounds like these guys just hate sea lions.

i dunno,im just a southern boy...when we stab something we intend on eating it....or keeping it from breaking into our house.

just a thought.

as a side note, this particular article seems out of place for this website....seeing how a lot of us here are regular readers and actually like this forum.
