EPA Kills Five Power Plants Along Road to Darkness
Posted by Dave Blount at July 13, 2011 6:52 AM
Barack Hussein Obama promised before the election that he would bankrupt the coal industry that provides us with 57% of our electricity. In an appalling testimony to the suicidal stupidity of 53% of the population, he was elected anyway. He's using the malignant EPA to make good on his promise:
Utility giant American Electric Power said Thursday that it will shut down five coal-fired power plants and spend billions of dollars to comply with a series of pending Environmental Protection Agency regulations. …
In a statement outlining its plan to comply with EPA's regulations, AEP said it would need to retire 6,000 megawatts of coal-fired power generation in the coming years.
The company, one of the country's largest electric utilities, estimated that it will cost between $6 billion and $8 billion in capital investments over the next decade to comply with the regulations in their current form.
The costs of complying with the regulations will result in an increase in electricity prices of 10 to 35 percent and cost 600 jobs, AEP said.
Just the ticket to revive our debt-ravaged economy.
Without the electricity generated by coal, what is going to make the farcical electric cars we're forced to subsidize go? Maybe the EPA will impose a regulation dictating that they have to run by magic.

On a tip from Byron.
Comments
Not magic, they will use a combination of unicorn farts, and Leftist frass.

Hopefully, starting in January 2013 some of this madness will be reversed.

Coal/Gas/Oil: Dirty, etc. No link needed.
I have an alternative, renewable, and easy to access source of energy. All we have to do is elect Obama for life, surrender to the Muslims, give in to Liberals on all matters and we can attach generators to the dead bodies of patriots spinning in their graves. The power generated by Arlington alone will power the world.

Perhaps in your mind you can titrate the malevolent Marxism of half the U.S. by excusing a percentage of Obama voters as suicidally stupid. That may well be. But the 900# gorilla is BHO and The Demorrhoid Party reflect the socialist-communist politics of their constituents.

We can build a clean energy economy and create green jobs for all if our public policy puts clean energy before big oil.

Hannah, while you and your ilk are dreaming up this 'clean energy' and these 'green jobs', what do the rest of us do for power and transportation?

hannah = useful idiot.
When are the Republicans in the House going to start defunding anti-American agencies like the radical EPA?
The only way to defeat the left is by using their tactics against them. When you're on the playing field and your's is the only team required to play by the rules, the outcome is a forgone conclusion. You lose!
Posted by: A. Levy at July 13, 2011 8:14 AM
I do believe hannah is Goonie.
I love the 8:08 answer though.
The question was essentially: What do we do in the meantime?
@ Jeremy however:
Ok, coal is bad, I get it. What VIABLE source will liberals allow to be used until the big ass pump to Fairlyland is connected for the harnessing of Unicorn Farts and Pixie belches?
Posted by: FrankW at July 13, 2011 8:15 AM
There is no such thing as "clean energy". It is smoke and mirrors. If you count the Total Cost of Pollution, nothing is "clean".
In point of fact gas fired, nuclear, and so-called clean coal are an order of magnitude kinder to the environment than windmills and solar. And... we can do these today, not in some pipe dream utopia of 'tomorrow'.
But then those of us with an IQ higher than room temperature know that. I head slap myself twice - once for preaching to the choir, and a second time for even entertaining the idea that mental defective infantiles would seek objective truth instead of fairy tales. Oh well...

We WILL? As in sometime in the future! And you somehow KNOW this all will happen.
I am talking about today, RIGHT NOW!!! How am I going to get home from work today without oil? How will I power my house, cook my food, and keep cool with oil TODAY???
What you and your ilk want is for us to give up oil RIGHT NOW and put all money into some green energy dream THAT DOESN'T EXIST.
That is why you are not and will not be taken serious.
Posted by: StanInTexas at July 13, 2011 8:19 AM
Jeremy -
Please immediately turn OFF your electricity at home and work and never use it again. Please sweat or freeze it out to prove the evil of coal. Please voluntarily pay 35% more of your last bill each month so that the COLLECTIVE hive can have more of your wealth.
(talk the talk now walk the walk) If oil is evil please relinquish all material objects in your possession and sell your car/bike/scooter/skateboard - oil is part of everything.
Posted by: Carmen at July 13, 2011 8:22 AM
hannah, can any of YOUR GREEN Economy be self-sustaining, i.e., created without the use of subsidies? Can these green technologies produce the same amount of energy as fossil fuels, or do they need to have redundant backup systems using the same fossil fuels you claim are harmful?
Bankrupting coal power plants will leave you in the dark. I'll find the article on what is happening in the UK right now, and try and link it to this thread by the end of the day.

American Electric Power has been dragging their feet on cleaning up these plants for DECADES. Other utilities knew this day was coming, and have been gradually putting pollution controls in place for a long time. AEP has chosen to be the lowest cost producer by not spending the money to cleaning up their plants, and now it is time to pay the piper.

I have green energy tech on my house. We had a 75kw geothermal generator installed by our well company. Its been chugging right along for about 3 years and puts out enough power for several homes. Yearly maintenance isnt to pricy i guess but I like not being connected to the city grid. 30 year warranty on labor and matrials cant be beat. Just my opinion though.
Posted by: Sinister66 at July 13, 2011 8:51 AM
What was the total up front costs of the geothermal generator? Can you use on if you have a deep water well?
Posted by: Carmen at July 13, 2011 8:53 AM
Geothermal generator? Do you live over a hot spring, or next to a volcanic vent? If so, great for you. But, geothermal power is only cost-effective in limited areas of the world.
Posted by: SNuss at July 13, 2011 9:22 AM
Bravo for shutting down these polluters. AEP is putting public health at risk with its cheap dirty energy. It is time to hold corporations accountable for hurting the public health in pursuit of profit.

Posted by: SNuss at July 13, 2011 9:22 AM
The same can be said of wind and solar. They are only "cost effective" where there is literally no other alternative. Say, for example, if you live so far out in the boonies that bringing electric service to your property is prohibitively expensive.
I know someone like this. He's a retired airline pilot who has a lovely ranch with a spectacular hillside view, but when he built his house, he discovered that bringing electricity to his place would have cost well over $100,000. He has solar panels on his roof and a windmill, plus a backup propane generator for when they aren't sufficient.

Posted by: Carmen at July 13, 2011 8:53 AM
I believe at the time it was almost $70,000. Its cheaper now but I dont know by how much. My water well is 300' while the well for the generator is almost 2700' and is a closed loop system. Depending on how deep they have to drill really effects the cost.
Posted by: SNuss at July 13, 2011 9:22 AM
I live on the west coast near Lake Tahoe. This whole area is ripe for geothermal. I have 15 acreas out in the sticks and I decided to have the hole house on electricity except the furnace. My average powerbill was well over 600.00 per month and this was the best solution I could find.
Solar would have been cheaper but with all of the trees I couldnt get enough direct sunlight throughout the day and i would need to be connected to the city grid as solar is a juggling act between the city meter and the rec meter.Still would be liable for the city taxes also.
Not sold on wind power but the bloom box looks promising.
Posted by: Anonymous at July 13, 2011 10:05 AM
I did inquire once about the whole geothermal thing, city I lived in would not allow a utility generator (power other than the electric company / gas company) to operate in the city limits (they have since bent to allow wind generation).
That aside before I invest in a power source that is equivalent to 23+ years of electricity payments (@$250 per month), if I do not plan on being in the same house for over 20 years (or I get transferred at work) I am back in the same boat. Geo may be a good micro-solution, but it lacks macro-feasibility.

Like I said. I am out in the sticks.I have to drive almost an hour and a half to get to the nearest grocery store and a little longer to get to work. Also not planning on moving anywhere. When I die my daughter gets everything and she can decide what she wants to do with it.

Posted by: Sinister66 at July 13, 2011 10:22 AM
Guys you are kinda missing one important point... those old coal-fired plants are actually, physically DIRTY.
I used to live a mile or so from Fisk, in Chicago. (Wiki it if you care). One of the oldest still running. And when the wind was coming in right (or wrong, i guess), an open window meant a layer of black slimy grime-shit all over my stuff mere moments later.
We can do better. Shut down the plants that are from the Victorian era.
This is the trouble with the republican party these days. Nobody will admit that there is something to the cleaner energy thing. It aint a zero-sum game. We can still use coal, but do it BETTER. Of course, to some, any closing of any power station is somehow the end of the world... but it doesn't need to be. And if the GOP were less... douch-ish, I bet the Dems would be more willing to play ball.
A little 'common' sense and I bet there is a lot of common ground we can find. Calling names and making fun of the very idea that closing a few plants might... you know... be good for Americans... don't be a jackass know-nothing. Think about what you write. And remember... there are indeed some truly god-awful power plants here in America that sure as shit could do with closing down and replacing.
Douchbaggery all over the place. Nothing new there.
Posted by: Anonymous at July 13, 2011 11:29 AM
How about a compromise anon? For every 3 dirty plants shut down build 1 new one or 1 nuke (same energy output as torn down plants combined)? If a company shuts down a "Victorian" era plant they get to lower red tape for building a newer, more efficient, (even) cleaner plant. Conservatives are not opposed to shutting down plants, we are opposed to eliminating jobs, lowering MW/KW production. If you can shut down plants and keep it watt neutral, you get my vote.

Oooooooh, a concern troll. That's (almost) new. What you describe is decades old and dead. Particulate filters and scrubbers have been de rigeur for a very long time now. The raw coal stacks can no longer allow dust to blow either. If there's a grungy plant somewhere I'd like to hear about it and so would that state's environmental folks.
All the scare stories about coal plants is based on thirty year out of date information and pure BS. The EPA's new mercury requirement is less than occurs in nature itself for instance. Stuff and nonsense.
Posted by: chuck in st paul at July 13, 2011 11:49 AM
We can still use coal...
Not if Obama or the EPA have anything to say about it.
Posted by: GoY at July 13, 2011 11:54 AM
Well, Frank and I agree. That's something. And I bet, were we to ask a representative sample of randomly selected Americans, 75%+ would agree, as well.
So... how the flying fuck are we incapable of just saying that? Nobody's 'team' loses face, we create all sorts of real jobs building and running the new plants, save some wildlife (and my stuff) from the really craptacular plants... everybody wins. No more making fun of wind/solar/tide/geo power just to be a dick. And in return, no more calling GOP representatives anti-environment asshats only interested in $ regardless of external costs. Plus, a new generation of cleaner power for America.
But, the GOP would have to authorize billions to subsidize the construction (which they will never do in the current climate) and the Dems would have to agree to build new coal plant(s) (which they just as surely will not do).
Damn. That was really... simple. Until Legislative branch politics got involved.
Fucking Congresscritters are all completely retarded. Regardless of label.
Vote against every incumbent (and for FrankW and me) in the next elections. Honestly. Gotta be better than what we've got.

Just so we are on the same page, this was about 4 years ago. And Fisk is still there, unaltered. It has been grandfathered in a dozen times or so, and is phenomenally filthy. Seriously... just go to wikipedia. Follow a link or two, maybe. Or if you have a friend/colleague that lives in the south loop/Pilsen area... just call them up and ask them. That whole part of town knows all about it. Not like it could possibly be a secret.
You can't alter reality just by being willfully obtuse. It is harmful to discourse and demonstrates a contempt for facts that reflects poorly on you.

Well put Chuck from St. Paul. I have seen much innovation and a much cleaner enviro. in my 50+ years here in the "steel buckle of the rust belt". The EPA will drive us back into the agrarian 1800's if allowed to. Unions and green weenies have decimated our economy quite enough thank you BO.

Sure there are problems with coal, but letting Obama confiscate our money, change our laws, and destroy our country, in the name of "green energy" is ridiculous.
Posted by: Jodie at July 13, 2011 12:13 PM
Jodie is an excellent example of people doing it wrong.
How the deuce is Obama 'destroying the country'? Your lights still turn on when you flip the switch. And will clearly also turn on tomorrow. Maybe you are all sorts of divine and can see the future... but maybe you are just confused.
Hyperbole and outright name-calling are the exact opposite of how progress is made.
Do you think Obama gives two shits about listening to people who accuse him of 'destroying the country'? How is that constructive, useful, or meaningful in any way? Did you see that statement as a means to a specific end, or are you just one of the 'angry, and I don't know why' subset?
Way to be part of the problem. I'm embarrassed on your behalf.

Did you ever notice you can instantly tell the party affiliation of a poster by the language they use?
Conservatives are generally family friendly, liberals rarely are.
I understand when you are privately talking to friends, it's easy to get into a pattern of vulgarities, especially after a few drinks of alcohol or a couple of hits of your favorite herb. Given we have one of the most complicated and expressive languages known to man, there are more appropriate words available to express your surprise, anger or what ever you are feeling.
To those of you with an extremely limited vocabulary: How ineffective was your education that you cannot write a response to someone without lacing it with profanities or vulgarities? We can do better than this.
