Why Sesame Street Needs to Be Government Subsidized

Posted by Dave Blount at May 31, 2011 11:51 AM

Why is it so important to moonbats that kiddy shows like Sesame Street be coercively financed and government controlled via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting? So they can install their ideology in impressionable minds by pushing television's liberal bias into overdrive:

Sesame Street has previously been accused of being left wing. In 2009 an episode mocked Fox News. The segment showed the character of Oscar as a reporter for the Grouch News Network and had a viewer telling him: "From now on I am watching 'Pox' News. Now there is a trashy news show."

More on Sesame Street's one-way route to indoctrination:

[Primetime Propaganda author Ben] Shapiro quotes Mike Dann, one of Sesame Street's founding executives, saying it "was not made for the sophisticated or the middle class." Using the premise, the team worked in all sorts of messages, including Grover breaking bread with a hippie and Oscar the grouch who was supposed to address "conflicts arising from racial and ethnic diversity." Dann also admitted he used the program in the wake of 9/11 to highlight peaceful alternatives to war.
"Sesame Street tried to tackle divorce, tackled 'peaceful conflict resolution' in the aftermath of 9/11 and had [gay actor] Neil Patrick Harris on the show playing the subtly-named 'fairy shoeperson'," writes Shapiro, according to THR.
The news may not be surprising considering the left's recent use of the show's cuddly character, Elmo. The furry, red puppet has been used to trumpet free internet, lament job loss, and even plug Michelle Obama's child nutrition bill.

It's bad enough that at least 95% of television programming has a pernicious left-wing bias. That people who don't even own televisions should be compelled to pay for it is intolerable.

...."Dann also admitted he used the program in the wake of 9/11 to highlight peaceful alternatives to war"...

Wouldn't want no stinking peaceful alternatives to war... especially when the reasons for making them turn out to be a mistake at best but more likely a lie from PNAC co-founder Cheney...

More proof, BLOUNT, that yours is yet another of the websites of the genetically nazi, always looking for an excuse to indulge in your inner psychopathic hate mongering.

I remember my college professor in 1970 seeing Sesame Street as the salvation of our nation's youth. I bought the Koolaid until Christ called me in 1980. End Government support for this liberal brain washing.

NO!!!!!!!! NOT THE INDOCTRINATION!!!!!!!

Its just a stupid TV show.

Posted by: Sinister66 at May 31, 2011 12:58 PM

My daughter watches this show day after day after day. I had no idea it was this bad, having only sat through a handful of episodes since I myself was a little kid.

It's a real shame more than anything else. For over forty years, "Sesame Street" has excelled at teaching kids about basic concepts like letters, colors, and numbers. You know, the stuff they really ought to know before kindergarten.

Now we've got the head honcho of the show admitting he's been using it as a vehicle to advance left-wing propaganda. It's not only sad, but unsurprising, given the liberal nature of the rest of PBS and other government-subsidized media.

If the show weren't receiving public money, or if I saw a good number of alternatives, this wouldn't be so upsetting.

The worst is that my child's mother won't even turn this tripe off if I tell her about it. I suppose I'll just have to use my own influence to counteract what she learns on TV, as she grows older.

Are you trying to say conservative, God-fearing parents shouldn't be disturbed by these revelations?

Get off my computer screen.

I am saying its a stupid TV show. If you dont like it, dont watch it.

On another note, why arent you spending time with your kids instead of making jackass comments on the internet?

Really? People still refer to themselves as "god fearin?" Sounds so "TV Western" hillbilly.

...and your god is so anxious to go to war? No wonder you fear him. I'd find a new one.

In Maine we are on the verge of totally defunding the state subsidy for the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The latest proposal zeroes out the entire $4 million state subsidy from the biennial budget. If you live or vacation in Maine let the local legislator and state senator know that you want MPBN to be totally self supporting.

PBS is too left-wing it needs to be totaly defunded I simlpy quit watching not only becuase of those annoying pledgebreaks but becuase their nature programs were comming up with this GAIA poppycock and blabbering this EVOLUTION,DARWINISM bull kaka

Sounds like a good use of the people's money. Children are being taught important life lessons from a progressive viewpoint. They are learning good things about good things like cooperation, pacifism, environmentalism, and nutrition. Even if their teabagger parents try to keep them in ignorance.

Progressive television plus a progressive public education system will be the cornerstone of a progressive future. Once sown, that seed will never be uprooted.

No it isnt. Organizations like this should rely solely on private donations and business advertising.

When it was discovered that Hitler indoctrinated children with Leftist ideology, the media was outraged. When it's discovered that progressives indoctrinate children with Leftist ideology, the media snores.

The Muppets along earn millions each year in sales and royalties. Sesame Street does not need taxpayer money. Never did.

Posted by: chuck in st paul at May 31, 2011 3:52 PM

The Muppets and Sesame Street are 2 different things.

Posted by: Sinister66 at May 31, 2011 3:57 PM

So then Fez when the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor what were we to do? Sit down and ponder their grievences?

When Hitler overran Europe and started burning the Jews, gypsies, and queers, what were we to do? Sit down and ponder his grievences?

When a herd of towelhead Satan worshippers came to American and killed three thousand innocent citizens what were we to do? Sit down and ponder their grievences?

And in each of these cases are we then to just allow the attacker to get away with it? Is there no response except dropping ones pants and bending over for another? Are we to go to the League of Nations or the United Nations and pontificate for years on the subject while the aggressor just smiles and kills and rapes again and again?

Your babbling pacifist BS is what encourages bad guys to do what they do. Then a whole bunch of guys like me and my buddies have to go in and clean up the mess. If the bad guys had been held in check to begin with the costs would have been small. The clean up is always costly in lives and wealth. A pox on all you pacifists who hide behind the guys who have to go out there where the metal meets the meat to clean up your messes.

Not really. Jim Henson's Muppets were created for Sesame Street. They star on Sesame Street. They ARE Sesame Street. The two are hand in glove.

In point of fact it still doesn't matter. There is no need for tax financed TV shows and there is nothing in the US Constitution that obligates the federal government to take tax money and do TV shows with it. Therefore under the enumerated powers, it's non of the federal government's business.

Your argument against wholesome and educational public television programming is that a bunch of wealthy white slaveholders never envisioned it hundreds of years before television was invented?

"Your argument against wholesome and educational public television programming is that a bunch of wealthy white slaveholders never envisioned it hundreds of years before television was invented?"
Our argument is that 'Sesame Street,' as it has been used for the last several years, is neither wholesome nor educational due to the garbage that ultra- liberals have been trying to push in it. Plus, yes, there is nothing in the Constitution, a document which was instrumental in founding our nation's laws (Yet which you increasingly demonstrate contempt for, as the "Utopian" concepts you have proposed here over the last few days would be blatantly contradictory to at least four of its Amendments), which states that taxpayers' money may be used for such a purpose (PBS as a whole, not just the newly- liberalized 'Sesame Street'), so it is thus none of the government's business.

Gunther,

Sesame Street is one of the most successful and popular children's shows *ever*. I'd be surprised if the majority of the country hasn't been raised on it by now. There is no reason it shouldn't be able to survive, and thrive, without subsidies.

Penny, it is one of the most popular children's shows ever for a reason. It teaches children basic human goodness in a world full of trashy entertainment. Parents recognize the value of Sesame Street. It helps so many people. Why should the people not help it?

Would you prefer children stay glued 24/7 to MTV or the violence channel?

Posted by: Günther at May 31, 2011 6:39 PM

Does anyone besides myself remember "Crazy Harry", the muppet terrorist? I wonder what happened to him.

Are those the ONLY choices in your "workers' paradise"? IN FREE countrys, we have MANY choices. We can even TURN OF our TVs without government permission, NO SHOWS have mandatory viewing.

Posted by: KHarn at May 31, 2011 6:46 PM

Children need help making positive choices. Some parents are good, but many are not.

If children do not grow up in a wholesome, nurturing and progressive atmosphere then society will pay the consequences.

We know you don't care about a better society. Some of us do.

Without beacons of public broadcasting like Sesame Street then children will be thrown to the wolves on the trash channels, full of trashy shows which teach antisocial behavior then bombards them with commercials promoting capitalist consumerism and ingraining it in them.

Progressivism is very wholesome - eugenics, genocide, labor camps to encourage "right thinking", forced sterilization of undesirable minorities, low cost abortion clinincs in black areas, sterilants in the drinking water, ect.

Sound like fun - all we need now is a deck of cards to decide who lives and who dies.

Libtard bias is in 99% of today's television programming. Don't tell me "it's just a TV show" - bullshit. If it weren't for nearly 40 years of left wing indoctrination thanks to these TV shows, the Democrat party would be dead (and it should be dead). Progressivism (or whatever the hell you twats are calling it this week) would be dead.

Children don't need to learn anything from a damn television set. That's why this country is blowing billions of dollars on public schools. They can learn there, but too bad our public schools are nothing more than left wing indoctrination camps.

Left wing influence is EVERYWHERE - in magazines, on TV, in movies, in music, in books, even in video games. It is inescapable. If it weren't for this evil (yes, evil) left wing influence this country would be a much better place.

And only lazy, worthless bums are socialists. Socialism is for lazy lowlifes who can't be bothered to do any work for their survival. Socialism and leftism in general is the cancer that is killing this country. Conservatism and capitalism is the only cure.
