Authoritarians Target Our Bellies

Posted by Dave Blount at July 16, 2010 10:44 AM

Socialism is all about one thing: control. The ultimate control is over our stomachs. This is why Joseph Stalin used food as a weapon, confiscating enough to kill as many as 10 million in the Holodomor. Leftist icon Mao Zedong's staggeringly incompetent totalitarian regime starved as many as 43 million more. Under the milder (although also economically devastating) socialist dictatorship of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the government began confiscating money from some to pay others not to plant crops. In over two centuries, the most crippling blow ever inflicted on our Constitution by the statist thugs it was written to protect us against was when the 10th Amendment was effectively repealed by FDR's stooges on the Supreme Court in the Wickard v. Filburn case, which determined that the Commerce Clause enables the federal government to dictate what food you can grow on your own land for your own consumption.

With past as prologue, we can make sense of the Nanny State's obsession with what we eat. Even some moonbats are becoming alarmed, as the kid gloves come off against organic farmers who produce non–State-approved food:

[G]overnment raids of producers, distributors, and even consumers of nutritionally dense foods appear to be happening ever more frequently. Sometimes they are meant to counter raw dairy production, other times to challenge private food organizations over whether they should be licensed as food retailers.

Computers and large quantities of food are routinely confiscated.

What's behind all these raids? They seem to stem from increasing concern at both the state and federal level about the spread of private food groups that have sprung up around the country in recent years — food clubs and buying groups to provide specialized local products that are generally unavailable in groceries, like grass-fed meats, pastured eggs, fermented foods, and, in some cases, raw dairy products. Because they are private and limited to consumers who sign up for membership, these groups generally avoid obtaining retail and public health licenses required of retailers that sell to the general public.

In a December 2008 raid of a food club near Cleveland,

armed law enforcement officers held a mother and eight young children being home-schooled at gunpoint for several hours while they searched the home and food storage areas. A legal challenge to the raid by the family is still tied up in court.

The raid was reportedly inspired by "licensing issues."

Food must be licensed if petty tyrants are to dictate what and how much we eat. Also, it's helpful for them to know how much we weigh. It turns out there's more to Comrade Obama's Porkulus abomination than a massive looting spree on behalf of his leftist cronies:

New federal regulations issued this week stipulate that the electronic health records — that all Americans are supposed to have by 2014 under the terms of the stimulus law that President Barack Obama signed last year — must record not only the traditional measures of height and weight, but also the Body Mass Index: a measure of obesity. …
The law also requires that these electronic health records be available — with appropriate security measures [yeah, wonderful] — on a national exchange.

At this point it's all too easy to imagine an America in which your purchase at the grocery store is blocked by a government computer program that thinks you've eaten enough.

What other authoritarian surprises lurk in the thousands upon thousands of unread pages of heavy-handed legislation that have been rammed through by the radical left since the Ascension of the Anointed One? Wait and see.
