WaPo Columnist: Obama Not to Blame for Not Living Up to Our Hype Americans' Unrealistic Expectations
Posted by Gregory of Yardale at June 11, 2010 8:46 AM
Obama, fairly enough, is reaping what he sowed in assigning himself an impossible mission as a global savior. But Americans are his culpable enablers. Few people want to hear this, but he's doing the best he can, considering the difficult circumstances that he and the nation face. And what he needs most from the public is a quality that distinguishes adults from children: patience.
Or, put another way: America, grow up!
Excuse me, Mr. Starobin, but wasn't it you and your colleagues in the MFM who sold us this bill of goods that Obama was an agent of change, a light-worker, "one of the smartest presidents ever," "1 of the 1000 smartest people in America," "sort of God?" Didn't Obama declare himself to be Superman when he said...
This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on earth. This was the moment--this was the time--when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves and our highest ideals.
Did Mr. Starobin or anyone at the WaPo criticize this speech as over the top? I Googled it and didn't find any criticism.
The MFM were uncritical cheerleaders for this guy throughout 2008 and will wave their pom-poms for him again in 2012. And this dimbulb Starobin blames the American people for having unrealistic expectations?
And since when is mere competence in a president an unrealistic expectation? Yeah, maybe only Superman could have personally plugged the oil hole. But you don't have to be Superman to let Royal Dutch Shell come in to siphon up the spill with 50 available supertankers, to let Bobby Jindal build protective sand berms, or to deploy miles of oil booms that are sitting in a warehouse in Maine.
Something else, too... when Lex Luthor was threatening to heap devastation on the world, Superman didn't nip off for a round of golf, party with Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, or head of to San Francisco to raise funds for Barbara Boxer.
Obama isn't Superman. He's not even Jimmy Olsen.
