In San Francisco, even metrosexual progressive drunk Gavin Newsom is fed up with teh homeless.
[T]he birthplace of the "Summer of Love" has also become a magnet for homeless youths who have blocked merchants' doorways and intimidated passersby with aggressive taunts, unpredictable dogs and even a few assaults.
The behavior, decried as thuggish by Mayor Gavin Newsom, is the catalyst for a proposed ordinance that would ban sitting or lying on sidewalks citywide from 7 a.m. to 11 pm.
"We're dealing with behavior creating real and chronic conditions where progressive liberals have had enough," said Newsom, who recently moved to Ashbury Heights, a warren of handsome Victorians above Haight Street.
But San Francisco's crackdown on bums may run afoul of a new California law making bums a protected class of citizens.
California's homeless would have enhanced civil rights protections under a bill passed by the state Assembly. The legislation approved Thursday would add the state's estimated 157,000 homeless to the list of groups protected from hate-based violence
Since progressive judges have held that panhandling and body funk are protected free speech, it's not too much of a stretch to see how a case can be made against a law targeting a protected victim group (bums) for enforcement.
