Ugh! I don't like having to post about Rand Paul -- I don't even like the guy. But this post really isn't about Rand Paul per se, but about the idiot, knee-jerk lefties that are attacking him.

I am irritated because, as I said before, it's stupid to be debating an issue from 1964 when the country has other, more serious problems. I hadn't even been born yet when this was an issue. Yeah, there's still pockets of racism in the country, but the problems of racism have diminished and been long eclipsed by the problem of a Government that is all-intrusive and fiscally unsustainable. (As in, maybe having a huge Department of Education filled with bureaucrats who contribute nothing to quality of education is a luxury we can no longer afford.)

Rand Paul's position is actually pretty thoughtful: Even though racial discrimination is wrong, the use of Government authority to fight it is an infringement upon freedom. We should think carefully before we infringe on freedom. Where freedom is abused to harm others, a case can be made for Government infringement, but still, we must weigh the use of Government power carefully because Government has been shown to abuse power, and does not relinquish it easily.

The left's smear of Paul's position is neither honest nor thoughtful: "It is a-ok for business to racially discriminate."

This debate on the limits of Government power is a good one to have; especially in a time when Government has gotten so big and so intrusive it has become a far greater threat to social cohesion than a few lingering pockets of racism. It's a pity the progressive left would rather engage in mindless racial demagoguery.
