Rats!

The consequences of the Nanny State mentality are vast and complex. It's as if somebody actually has to PAY for all those services and entitlements. When outlays exceed tax revenue, well, something has got to give. Take, for instance, safety and hygiene in New York City as an example.
Budget cuts could mean more rats for New York City.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is slashing the number of pest control aides in an effort to save $1.5 million. 57 out of 84 full-time pest control aide positions will get the axe.
The cuts are part of the Health Department's efforts to meet a mandated 15 percent budget reduction to help close a $2 billion budget gap for the city. The Health Department's Pest Control Services works with 19 other agencies to coordinate the city's response to rats in New York City.
It would be interesting to see the list of nonessential Nanny-Statist services that were not cut, rather than one of the most basic services of a civilized government for its citizenry. If New York maintains both its high tax rates and lavish expenditures on progressive social welfare programs, revenues will continue to fall from millionaire flight and additional basic services may be at risk. Rush Limbaugh is not the only rich dude or dudette who no longer will do business in NYC due to taxation.
