Kansas City to Close Half Its Schools
Posted by Gregory of Yardale at March 12, 2010 3:53 AM
Kansas City, MO, is going to close half of its public schools. A sensible person might consider this a reasonable response given that the city has massive budget problems and has lost of its population. Most of those schools were half empty anyway.*
If you are a "Community Activist" on the other hand, this is just another example of The Man's racism keeping the people down.
"The urban core has suffered white flight post-the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. the Board of Education, blockbusting by the real estate industry, redlining by banks and other financial institutions, retail and grocery store abandonment," Kansas City Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks said to applause from the standing-room-only crowd.
Whatever, lady.
BTW, Chairman Zero's Secretary of Education has promised a crackdown on schools that discipline black students at rates Eric Holder's Justice Department considers "disproportionate." You see, the biggest problem faced by minority youths isn't fatherlessness, a culture that stigmatizes achievement and celebrates victimhood, or schools run like fiefdoms for teachers unions... it's that they are expected to behave as well as white students.
Maybe Eric Holder can send in the Black Panthers to act as Hall Monitors.
* My personal feeling is that smaller schools make for better learning and disciplinary environments. Unfortunately, the bureaucratic infrastructure demanded by the Teachers Unions make smaller schools economically unsustainable.
