Retro Moonbattery from 1973

The last time the Progressive Left had the level of political and cultural dominance it enjoys today was in the early to mid-1970's.While some lefties were high-fiving themselves over getting the USA out of Vietnam (shrugging off the subsequent genocide) and making legalized baby-killing national policy, a few academics were looking at ways to push the boundaries even further.

C. Etzel Pearcy, a geography professor at California State University, Los Angeles, proposed abolishing the fifty states as they existed then... with their geographically-influenced state lines and cultural distinctiveness... and replacing them with 38 states whose boundaries were based on consolidating large urban centers (gee, which party would that benefit?). States would also be renamed to eliminate the painful memory of those dead white guys who named them the first time around.

The resulting map looked like this (Click to enlarge):

I'm not totally averse to the idea of realigning some state boundaries; California is so huge it really needs to be split up. But this wholesale realignment and this kind of checkerboard disregard for culture and geography could only have come from someone pretty wrapped up in his own delusions of grandeur.
