I have not read the Koran, but I've talked to people who have studied world religions and whose judgement I trust. Based on secondhand information, the book itself isn't consistent in its attitudes toward non-Muslims. Supposedly the earlier parts of it are fairly tolerant, simply Mohammed writing down his ideas and opinions about how people should live. The later parts, I'm told, were written after he was driven away from Mecca, before he returned with an army and captured the city.

Supposedly, he was angry during this later period and his writings reflected an intolerance toward the Christians and Jews who were living in the area. He had tried to "convert" members of both groups - when speaking to Jews he called himself a 'prophet,' to Christians, an 'apostle.' Neither were interested in what he had to say. He took this as a personal insult and killed as many of both groups as possible.

Further, it's my understanding that some of the differences among different Muslim sects have to do with which part of the Koran they put more emphasis on, as well as the interpretation of what is written.

Depends on who you mean. I don't know. You could make the case that while some Muslims clearly think that (and their actions demonstrate it), that the more moderate ones are either biding their time, or simply aren't fanatical enough to interpret such teaching literally in the first place.

If you think that all Muslims believe in global Shar'ia at some level (and hell, maybe they do, maybe they don't)...then you'd have to argue that what we're doing in Iraq and Afghanistan is a complete waste of time. Even if radicals like the Taliban and AQI are utterly destroyed, it would mean that even the prevailing moderate Muslims ultimately have it in for us, too.

Personally, it's hard for me to put countries like Jordan and Egypt in the same category as Iran or Syria. And that doesn't have anything to do with some Muslim nations being Shiite while others are Sunni; both major sects have extremists and terror groups - the Taliban are Sunni, while Hizbollah are Shiite. I think anyway.

Iran probably hasn't got the cash to seal the deal. Russia has already given them hassles over the nuclear reactor they're building near Tehran for this reason. Iran's got all kinds of problems in the pocketbook these days, with oil below $100/barrel at the root of most of them.

Don't be too sure of that. How else would you characterize the ruling governments in most Muslim countries? They aren't communist, and they certainly aren't capitalist either.

Most maintain a fairly high level of state ownership of the economy, with little allowance for free speech or religion, and cradle-to-grave health benefits as in Europe. This is true even in Saudi Arabia, which is technically a monarchy. Most of them are controlled by a small ruling elite (a strongman or oligarchy and an inner circle) with the uneducated, mostly-poor rabble down at the bottom.

The only true democratic Muslim governments are the ones the US has created, and even those have a lot of problems. Turkey and Indonesia are the only other ones which come even close to democracy.

Even the better-developed Muslim countries are far more socialist than the US is, and the more moderate ones like Egypt still aren't real free or prosperous.

If they're not socialist, you tell me what they are.

A lesson on Islam and the Koran from Robert Spencer, recognized scholar and expert:
The Koran is hard for we infidels to understand because the verses, called sura, are printed from longest to shortest, not by the date they were written. The earliest parts of the Koran were written when Mohammed was militarily and politically weak and stressed cooperation with Jews and Christians. Later, when he became mighty, his inspiration from the angel Gabriel was suddenly that all Children of the Book, that is, Jews and Christians, are infidels and most be killed where ever one finds them. I laugh and grind my teeth at the same time when I see stupid liberals driving around with those COEXIST bumper stickers, each letter made out of the symbol for different religions including Islam. They are too ignorant to realize that Islam by definition REFUSES to coexist with others. Because too many Americans have failed to educate themselves on Islam they believe the tripe that cover groups and politicians tell them that Islam is a religion of peace. It is not. Making excuses for the Hasans in America will only open more opportunities to attack the Great Satan here at home where we are not expecting it. All of you can see how our dhimmi press is already covering for him.

One would expect Western civilizations to at least have a sense of self-preservation, but multiculturalism and political correctness, hate crimes law and the like have ensured that one may not speak the truth about the threat. In fact, our illustrious president is cosponsoring a hate crimes resolution at the UN with Egypt (!) on restricting speech that denigrates one's religion.

Britain is almost gone, and the last administration has admitted that they endorsed massive immigration to purposely destroy Britishness. Like what is going on here with the open borders and refusal to enforce our laws against illegal aliens. Europe is circling the drain for the same reason. The Muslims are gaining political power through numbers, and then Europe's demise will increase speed. Wake up, people.

It is uneducated sneering pseudo intellectuals like Aquatarkus who help speed the Muslim cause along. Ignore him. Educate yourself. Defend your civilization.

It's the Christian religion that is socialist. In fact ,when you think about it, Jesus was the first socialist Jew.

Jesus was not a socialist, oldguy. In the New Testament, Jesus calls for personal charity. He says that a man is entitled to the fruits of his labor. Try actually reading the Bible. No where did Jesus say that government should take people's money from them to give to others. Personal acts of charity show obedience to God and help ensure that one will join Jesus in heaven.

Rev. Al’s (Ex-)Wife and Daughter Arrested! It’s true, the Very Reverend Blowhard Al Sharpton’s former blushing bride, Kathy Jordan, 53, and their daughter, Dominique, 23, were arrested after running a red light in Harlem.

The NYPD doesn’t customarily incarcerate red-light violators, especially in Harlem, but this situation was unique.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Al was fuming and shocked, I tell you, over the incident, twittering in not just his usual twitter but on Twitter.

In high dudgeon he twitted, “I cannot imagine how two unarmed women with no record could be taken in cuffs from a traffic dispute with NO personal or property damage involved.”

Without literally invoking his usual charges of racism, he merely insinuated it: “Well this is what we deal with every day. We will never accept unfairness. (There was) no drugs or drinking at all.”

Now, the last thing NYC cops would want to do would be to offend Rev. Al and his constituency so one must suspect there was more to the matter that met the eye, including an exhibition of “blackitude,” that attitude expressed in oppressed indignation long synonymous with northern African-Americans.

Although the Chronicle failed to report details as to the disposition of the charges or the argument content, the retort may very well have gone something like this: “Whatcha mean, yo racist, honkie, mutherf*cker? Yup, and John Allen Muhammad's execution is scheduled for tomorrow. Too bad it's only lethal injection... he really deserves a firing squad, or at the least, hanging. Not the quick, drop through the floor type either, the slow, have a horse slapped out from under you-swinging from a tree kind.

TED, I noticed that at the DU as well. The thread I looked at, they were tepid, tentative, unsure, disoriented. Almost a feeling of dread that comes after "be careful what you wish for." After all, there could be all kinds of things stuffed into a 2,000 page bill. Just because it has a D next to it, doesn't make it all sweetness and light. And yes, they really were hoping for free ponies, not personal mandates.

At least my comments don't look like they were written by someone with a serious thought disorder.

They do to those of us who wasted too much time reading them.

I was talking to my neighbor tonight. He found out that the health bill means everyone has to buy insurance, not just get free insurance. "I told you so". I also told him that the taxes would start next year but the "health care" would not be available until 2013. The air just went out of him. I suspect his is not an isolated case.
