Post-Election Euphoria Fades with Depressing WaPo Headline

Posted by The MaryHunter at November 5, 2009 5:52 AM

The Washington Compost does have a knack for sucking the wind out of a celebration with its headlines, doesn't it:

Va. Republicans pledge to steer toward center
A tone set by McDonnell

Even more depressing, the first paragraph:

RICHMOND -- Despite winning the governor's race by a 17-percentage point blowout, Virginia Republicans insisted Wednesday that they had gained no broad mandate and would make their top priority the pragmatic platform that drove voters to the polls.

They. Just. Don't. Get. It.

Virginian Republicans and Conservatives, I pity you.

Comments

I dunno - 17 points sounds sure like a mandate to me, especially there and under those circumstances....

I could be an optimist and say that what the VAGOP is doing is trying to redefine the center rightward, but that is the kind of thing Republicans are usually too stupid to think of.

Was the WaPo gleeful about this revelation, since they know that such moderation will ultimately result in an erosion of the GOP statewide, as Conservatives become disheartened? When ever have Republicans ever succeeded by trying to act more like Democrats?

Very clever of them to make this above-the-fold, front page news.

Polls repeatedly show about half the country considering itself "conservative"- with GOP popularity far lower.

So, it looks like the VA race is surely a rejection of Obama's liberal agenda, rather than some sudden embrace of the GOP and it's direction in recent years- so their answer is to move to the left? huh?

The Newts and Goober Grahams appearently didn't learn anything in losing the presidency to a unqualified socialist kook by running a RINO, etc... didn't we just try the "pragmatic" thing?

Oh now, look. Couldn't it be that they're maybe taking a little sting off for the losing voters? I'm thinking here of myself late yesterday afternoon. Via ConsCave, I saw some comments from the DU. They were wailing and gnashing their teeth that Owens was against card-check, against public option, and a host of other things they love, such as communism. I slept better last night, knowing we weren't stuck with a moonbat Pelosi clone for 363 days (at least I don't think so.) The guy is a RINO or a DINO to be sure, having spent most of his life as an R and just recently becoming D to win. Slimebags, nearly all them, true. But, it could much much worse.

Let's hope they are just learning from the Dem's mistake of getting cocky and proclaiming from the rooftops "a new day has dawned!". Let's face it, most people hate an obnoxious winner, and pragmatic sounds a lot better to me at this point than what the leftists are promoting.

The real test will be what people actually do while in power, not what they say for PR purposes. They need to be judged by their actions. If McConnell turns all wishy washy like McCain (for instance), then next time governor McConnell is running for reelection in the primary, vote against him. if he delivers the goods then VA voters should reelect him.

"I slept better last night, knowing we weren't stuck with a moonbat Pelosi clone for 363 days (at least I don't think so.)"

The ads for Hoffman offered proof that Pelosi herself helped bankroll Owens' campaign. Judging by the way favors are repaid in DC, don't hold your breath.

Rush acknowledges that selecting a moderate Republican candidate is what helped win New Jersey:

"In New Jersey, they had a primary. There was a guy that was more conservative than Christie, Steve Lonegan. They had a primary and Christie won the primary and the party got behind the winner."

It is not like there was ever any real difference between McDonnell and Deeds. The only thing separating them was Obama's endorsement. Career politicians are not conservatives. They are not on our side. They will only sound conservative to get our votes, but this is just another job for them. It is we, not they, who still don't get it.

Lao, we weren't discussing NJ, but VA.

Try to keep up.

I'm with Karin. WaPo is trying to convince its collective (appropriate) self that their getting their ass kicked wasn't so bad, really, not when you think about it. Sorta. Coulda been worse. It's called "putting on a brave face."

Karin, I suited up and visited DU yesterday to see their reaction to VA, NJ, and the fruit vote in Maine, and found...nada. Buried deeper than whale crap. Must've been there somewhere, but nowhere obvious.

That alone says it all.

Too funny Jay.

VA Republicans pledge to steer towards the center.

NJ Republicans rejected the conservative for a moderate.

NY 23 conservatives lost.

Notice any connection?

With Karin on this.
I read the article in WaPo and a more misleading piece of journalism would be hard to find.
Because the winner did not mention certain things, or take certain stances, WaPo, sucking high on the bong water, concocted a story that the winner was moving left.
It was aimed at soothing the losers and bore no relation to reality. Bit like Lao, really.

Jay, sweety, are you one of Lao's playmates? Anyway, he is rather busy and distracted right now. He has put up a new shirtless Obama poster, locked the door, and told me he requires some privacy. He won't be long. His "alone" time usually only takes a couple of minutes.

All the best
