Where'd you get that picture? It looks like some kind of "portable" sound detector from one of the world wars. That poor solder (Tommy? doughboy?) sure doesn't look too happy about wearing it!

Most likely a WW2 photo. My guess is the soldier is an RKKA (Red Army) Intelligence officer, rank unknown, shoulder-boards are absent. Around 1943.
