No Letting the Engine Run While You Scrape Ice Off Your Windshield

Posted by Van Helsing at November 30, 2009 8:04 AM

To the extremely long list of pointless laws that combine to form the soft totalitarianism prevailing in Airstrip One, we can add a proscription against letting the engine run while you scrape ice off your windshield. You see, supposedly wasting a few drops of gasoline would be hurtful to polar bears. No, I'm not kidding:

Motorists who leave their cars running on frosty mornings to warm up the engine and clear the windscreen could face being fined under anti-pollution rules this winter.
Drivers are being told that leaving a car idling for more than a couple of minutes wastes fuel, and they could be served with on-the-spot fines of up to £40.

This is how liberty dies: not by a single blow that people would know enough to resist, but by thousands of bureaucratic paper cuts that gradually bleed us dry. Environmental hysteria offers the pretext for an infinite number of trivial regulations, the only real purpose of which is to make us do whatever petty tyrants tell us.

I know it's from the UK, but here in the People's Republik of Hellannoys, we have those too, which is stupid due to the fact that it's easier to scrape off the windshield when ya got the engine warming and the defroster going, not to mention getting it warmed up inside ahead of time so ya don't freeze your ass off when ya head to work. But the eco-bureaucrats would I'm sure rather have a few more accidents on the road than for someone to use a few drops of fuel getting their car adequately heated and removed of obstructive ice and snow.

Jolly Good...

The British people are deeper into the Global Communism than the USA is at the moment. Obama and the "Democracy Practicing" Congress are doing all they can to force the US Population into the same bind as the British. If you see it in England then soon enough you will see it here.

Keep in mind by electing Obama he has treaty power that can and has allowed him to make deals with the various devils of the world like China and now with the Greens who happen to be the Global Communists.

There was an article on here about how the entire world is now under Global Governance. I firmly believe that as a result of the massive debt to China and the deepening depression, Obama and the Congress have given away our sovereignty and at some point both Chinese and UN soldiers could be marching down our streets as our people remain in the desert.

Soon, the US Government will enrage the US masses to the point of insurrection. They will be sure to stand defended while the various factions of the people fight it out amongst themselves. Black against white, Democrat against Republican, Man against Woman, Father against Son, Religion against Religion and so on.

You see, Obama is not a uniter of people but instead a DIVIDER and this is a powerful weapon since the US political division in and of itself is about 50/50. Creating a never-ending depression, massive unemployment, poverty and so on will only amplify the already visible contempt the general population feels for itself.

This is a Communist Population Control and Disposal operation to implement a Global Communist Oligarchy that death might be the only escape from. Each and every day we (the USA) becomes more and more Europeanized right down to metric shoes. Cap n Trade will force us to close off our fireplaces and change our light fixtures to accommodate European bulbs (made in China)

Our list of options is shrinking as fast as the economy. I stated my view on what those were in another thread and even if we decide to take drastic steps (to fight), I fear that the situation is already too far-gone to turn it around.

Here in the peoples republic of Massachusetts, they also have a no idling over 5 minutes law. I work for a large Electric utility and the company is constantly reminding it's workforce of the law and threatening discipline if its not complied with.
Interesting sidenote, The company, who has no problems making profits year after year, announced that it just received over 7 million in Stimulus money to invest in "smart grids". Elsewhere in the industry, Detroit Edison was awarded $5 million to find out if electric car batteries can be bundled together to store power for the electric grid ....Southern California Edison received $24.9 million to test lithium-ion batteries that would store wind-generated power.
Over 620 million was "awarded" overall to utilities to promote green initiatives.
Yeah, this is money well spent right

Are you familiar with the fallacy reductio ad absurdam? Look it up. You just committed it. On to the commenters, AlphaOmega, please explain to me how a president who continued a bailout enacted by Bush, continues a war enacted by Bush, and continues to use secrecy laws enacted by Bush, is a... sorry, I had to laugh myself silly... is a communist? Are you high? Obama is a center right Democrat like all the other center right Democrats, and somehow you see a communist? Did you skip your meds today? No, that isn't it. You're just one of those guys for whom "communist" is the same as "not conservative." You imply you are going to fight? I gotta tell you, reading guys like you make implied threats on these websites doesn't exactly get me quaking in my boots. You imply a race war is imminent? Is that supposed to be an original thought? Do you know people like you with nothing constructive to say except, "Duh, I think there'll be a race war," have been around for frickin' ever? When are people going to fight? During the commercial breaks of their favorite shows? Spare us, please. Go read a history book, so you understand what a communist is, and so you know what the causes of social upheaval are. And if you're worried about government power, stop attacking the various straw men set up to keep rubes like you agitated, and start doing something about what actually matters, like the corporate handovers referenced by commenter Contrarian Libertarian. Vote against that, and don't amuse us with impotent threats of violence. Vote and protest. Those are your weapons. But as you use those weapons, have no illusions about your enemies having a conservative or liberal face. If you can't clear that hurdle, you shouldn't even bother visiting another website. It would be waste of time.

Well, I see a communist, for sure. He's "continued" a couple of things Bush did, and that makes him center-right? Bush was center-right? News to me. This dickhead has since used our money to buy out some investment banks and large automakers, and is actively (and against the will of the people) seeking a government takeover of the healthcare industry. Nothing says communist to me like, well, communism. But that's all off-topic.

My favorite kind of ice is the kind where you have to really chip at it to get it off, then as soon as you do it starts reforming. There's no way in hell you can start down the road safely until you've run the engine for five minutes.

So, then what you are implying is that WE didn't get attacked on September 11,2001! Yes, your Democratic party has in fact been overrun by communists and communist sympathizers. Consider the truth that you think as well as your party that the USA is a DEMOCRACY… GFY

What about when the windshield keeps fogging up until the motor warms up? It is fun smearing it up!

Posted by: AlphaOmega at November 30, 2009 9:55 AM

Where is all this frost coming from? I heard temps were rising to crisis levels. With fewer cold days ahead (the science is settled), soon there will be nothing to defrost.

"Puffing" laws in Colorado, too. Yes, liberty dies incrementally. As GKC says, when you break the big laws, you don't get liberty or even anarchy -- you get thousands of small laws which creep insidiously (as intended) into every aspect of our lives.

For people who park outside and don't have the luxury of a garage, letting your engine run while you scrape ice or clear off snow is okay by me. Just make sure you have an unobstructed view before you drive! If a polar bear dies, because you actually took the time to clear your windshield, so be it. The same goes for the owls. Death to the owls!

The Colorado puffer law as it is called is really an "unattened motor vehicle law", to help prevent car theft, that is people who start their cars and then go inside the house while the defroster does the work, or people who let the car idle while they go into a 7-11 for a cup of coffee or while at the post office to get their mail from the P.O. box. I see this alot--year around, seasonal or not, it is a risk. It is not a nanny state envirokook law , as much as a nanny state law for people who are too stupid to realize that an idiling car with the keys left inside provide an opportunity for car theft--give a criminal an easy opportunity and he will take advantage. And the law does not provide exemptions for remote start systems, or if the owner has locked the car and has a spare key handy. An unattened car puffing away warrants at least a warning or perhaps a ticket.

My take: People need to take the time to clean all windows completely before driving. I've seen plenty of people who have cleared a small area in front of them peering through the hole like a sub captain looking through a periscope. If folks are too lazy to do that and want the defroster to do the work, stay with the car and avoid a ticket!

Lets all look for a second, at the car itself.
With all the envirocrap under the hood the correct operating temprature must be achieved so all systems can operate to peak effiency. Without the correct temp the car runs in a "choke" condition and uses 4 times the fuel consumed in normal operation. With " start it and drive it" the car also wears out faster.

Ps, We call the little view space the
"Wisconsin Hole."

I used to live in Wisconsin, where the ice on the window was thick and hard to scrape off. I would have liked to see a cop sitting and timing me to see if I let the car warm up longer than five minutes. Get a life.
We won't have such nonsense here in Florida. I can leave the car run as long as I want to make sure it's nice and cool inside before I get in. ;)

I love it how Bush gets blamed for TARP when he only agreed to signing it because Obama wanted it signed before he took office. That's what you get for helping a Communist--a hammer and sickle to the back of the head.

Posted by: Judith M. at November 30, 2009 1:17 PM

What's the problem? You run the engine for 2 minutes, shut it off. Restart it again. Repeat until you've got the ice off. Shazam, not idling for longer than a couple of minutes! When they try to ticket you for that, you fight on a technicality.

Unfortunately, eventually, there will be fights on the *street* instead of fights on technicalities in court. They don't seem to a) see it coming or b) care.

Posted by: Vote For David at November 30, 2009 1:32 PM

1. I hate scraping ice so I moved to Florida!
2. A garage to prevent ice will remove more CO2 scrubbing from the earth than your car running to warm up will create.
3. Liberty will not die as long as firearms exist, and they aren't going away.
AlphaOmega; The treaty power the President has must be confirmed by 2/3 vote in the Senate, without exception, and there are too many minority races who are NOT Socialist-leaning to promote race wars.
Those things will never happen.

Are you familiar with the fallacy reductio ad absurdam?

Dear Moron,

The reductio ad absurdum (note the spelling) is not a fallacy, despite what your comic books tell you. It is a perfectly valid tool of logic used to show that a proposition is extended sufficiently it leads to a logically absurd conclusion.

For example, consider the notion that a woman who fears for her life from her husband has a right to kill him. The problem, of course, is that the criterion is flawed; unless women are a a special case (sorry, girls, but no sale) by extension, anyone who fears someone may later do him harm is justified in killing the person suspected of later doing him harm. By that criterion, and the reductio ad absurdum, the woman's husband would be justified in killing his wife if he suspected she was thinking about killing him. Clearly, therefore, expectations of future actions cannot justify murder.

That is a valid application of the reductio ad absurdum. Now go back to your coloring books and try again.

How about just tossing a small electric heater in the passenger compartment. (Properly placed to avoid fire.) It has worked fine for me in the past. I'm sure it will drive greenies crazy in the regulated idling area of the country.
