Moonbat Professor Laments the Collapse of the Berlin Wall

Posted by Gregory of Yardale at November 8, 2009 5:01 PM

The Academic Elite in the USA and Eurotopia have a genuine love and affection for brutal, oppressive Communist regimes. Castro and Chavez are heroes to them. And it should come as little surprise that a feminist professor takes to the pages of the Guardian to lament the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

On 9 November 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down I realised German unification would soon follow, which it did a year later. This meant the end of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the country in which I was born, grew up, gave birth to my two children, gained my doctorate and enjoyed a fulfilling job as a lecturer in English literature at Potsdam University. Of course, unification brought with it the freedom to travel the world and, for some, more material wealth, but it also brought social breakdown, widespread unemployment, blacklisting, a crass materialism and an "elbow society" as well as a demonisation of the country I lived in and helped shape. Despite the advantages, for many it was more a disaster than a celebratory event.

By "for many," she means "me." (Progressive leftists are masters at projecting their selfish desires on masses of people.) In her case, the disaster was she was no longer a privileged academic in a country where the great masses of people waited in lines all day for scarce supplies of food and consumer goods, and were subject at any time to arrest and imprisonment by the secret police. Being a progressive leftist academic, she was okay with that as long as there was socialized health care.

Since the demise of the GDR, many have come to recognise and regret that the genuine "social achievements" they enjoyed were dismantled: social and gender equality, full employment and lack of existential fears, as well as subsidised rents, public transport, culture and sports facilities.

That doesn't sound a whole lot different than the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda; except for the "full employment" part.

There's no need for me to rebut her, Jonah Goldberg already did so, and did so well.

As Newsbusters reminds us, the media left were just as pro-communist back in the day as the academic left.

“Few tears will be shed over the demise of the East German army, but what about East Germany’s eighty symphony orchestras, bound to lose some subsidies? Or the whole East German system, which covered everyone in a security blanket from day care to health care, from housing to education? Some people are beginning to express, if ever so slightly, nostalgia for that Berlin Wall.” — CBS’s Bob Simon, March 16, 1990 Evening News.

By "some people" he means "me." East Germany may have been an oppressed, impoverished police state... but it had subsidized symphonies. To Bob, that made it okay.

Our media, our academic institutions, the White House, and both houses of Congress are now firmly in the control of people who believe the wrong side won the Cold War.

We are repeating history, only on a much quicker cycle than the last time, because of the cancer from within.

There will be a severe backlash.

Think of all the bad impacts of pulling down the Wall. I mean, all those Stasi thugs and informers out of work (no ACORN or SEIU to hire them), and who needs to hire people whose sole job experience is shooting fleeing refugees in the back? Gigs like that don't grow on trees.

So spare a thought for the suffering caused by the destruction of the Wall. /sarc

Btw, I'd been to East Berlin (a month before the Wall fell), and I'm here to tell you, it was a shithole. Believe me, it was awful. It made Detroit look good.

Sounds like she has Stockholm Syndrome with East Germany being the captor she has delusions of loving. What a nut!

Obama Snubs Berlin Wall Ceremonies

President Barack Obama's decision to spurn German President Angela Merkel's invitation to attend ceremonies commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago is "the most telling nonevent of his presidency."

That's the view of National Review Editor Rich Lowry, who notes that Obama has visited more foreign countries than any other president during his first year in office, yet has begged off going to Berlin to celebrate the Nov. 9 anniversary because of a crowded schedule.

"It's hard to imagine any other American president eschewing the occasion," Lowry writes.

"Wouldn't Obama at least want to take the occasion to celebrate freedom and human rights — those most cherished liberal values? Not necessarily. He has mostly jettisoned them as foreign-policy goals in favor of a misbegotten realism that soft-pedals the crimes of nasty regimes around the world.

"During the Cold War, we undermined our enemies by shining a bright light on their repression," Lowry writes. "In Berlin, JFK called out the Communists on their 'offense against humanity.' Obama would utter such a phrase only with the greatest trepidation, lest it undermine a future opportunity for dialogue."

The Berlin Wall came down because the free world, led by America, stood resolute against communist tyranny. But for Obama, "we are less an exceptional power than one among many, seeking deals with our peers in Beijing and Moscow," Lowry observes.

"Why would Obama want to celebrate the refuseniks of the Eastern Bloc when he won't even meet with the Dalai Lama in advance of his trip to China?"

Heeding Ronald Reagan, Germans Tore Down the Berlin Wall

It is one of the most famous quotations in American history: In 1987, Ronald Reagan stood before the Brandenberg Gate and proclaimed to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, "If you seek peace . . . Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Few had the vision to imagine such a thing in the Cold War, but two years later, twenty years ago this week , the German people rose up and tore down the wall.

What is sad and scary is that silly liberals truly believe in the communist theory. I am the son of what basically amounts to a 'share cropper'. Through hard work I achieved the American Dream +. I had the same chances as everyone else - no more and no less.

I would ask the silly liberals trolls who so stupidly believe communism = social justice; give me an example of the son of a poor communist street sweeper who achieved the 'communist dream'? What IS the 'communist dream'?

It doesn't exist. Socialism begets apathy. Socialism begets failure. Socialism begets rotting cities, despair, and death without hope.

Silly liberals - take your socialism and go create your own little utopia somewhere else. Attempting to shove your ideology down the throats of those of us who know better will only lead to one thing - blood in the streets.

SK, two friends of mine are Polish, and former members of Solidarity. For them, and apparently for Poles generally, Ronaldus Maximus is God. One told me that in their darkest days in Solidarity, worrying about a socialist crackdown any minute, they heard Reagan's words of support and their morale soared! Someone out there, someone with clout, supported them and their cause. He literally gets misty-eyed talking about it.

That's funny, the way you called it ‘Eurotopia’ makes it sound like a very nice place, which I'm certain wasn't the image you were trying to convey.

Ever noticed that European cheese is much better than American cheese?
I'm not implying anything, I just felt like mentioning it.

Posted by: Aquatarkus at November 8, 2009 6:18 PM

Cheese is obviously the apotheosis of Western civilization.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at November 8, 2009 6:24 PM

Yeah, who needs freedom when you have good cheese.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 8, 2009 6:27 PM

Absolutely. Why don't the Europeans could just sniff their socks? I bet they smell like cheese too.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at November 8, 2009 6:31 PM

People aren't allowed to like East Germany.
People aren't allowed to not like the USA.
People aren't allowed to like post-war Europe.
Can you just make a list of places that we're all supposed to love or hate?
Because without the infallible judgement of the American people, the rest of the world might fall to the ruddy Communists!
You've been doing it since the late 40s and no-one has suffered (they have - Panama, Chile, Afganistan?).

If you knew just how many members of the European parliament represent far-Right parties (most of them), you'd be impressed (because it sucks).
Maybe then you'd reconsider calling Europe a ‘Marxist super-state’ (it's run by fascists).

Does this site ever check the provenance of it's news sources?

You are aware that The Guardian is aimed at middle-class Liberals, aren't you?
It's the most balanced and well-written of the main British newspapers (and it's the only paper that doesn't piss me off).

The Telegraph is aimed at middle-class Conservatives (it's very smug), The Daily Mail is aimed at reactionaries (you'd love it, seriously), The Mirror is aimed at the poorly-educated (it has a reading age of 7), The Independant is aimed at boring bastards (the font is very small to fit more words on every dull page) and The Sun is aimed at perverts.

Posted by: Aquatarkus at November 8, 2009 7:56 PM

The Sun is aimed at perverts.

Then that ridiculous omnisexual freak you hang out with should love it.

Posted by: SK at November 8, 2009 8:03 PM

Aquatarkus, any 'news' agency aimed at liberals is pure propaganda with no basis on reality.

Sheesh.

Remind me again, where is this "Britain" you talk about? Is it near Bolivia?

Posted by: Jay Guevara at November 8, 2009 8:28 PM

Let me clarify.

The Guardian is aimed at smelly socks socialists.

The Independent [note the correct spelling] is aimed at those with socks equally redolent, but of slightly different aroma.

The Telegraph is aimed at Brits who long for Britain once again to play a major role on the world stage.

The Sun is aimed at those who like tits.

The News of the World is aimed at those who consider the Sun too intellectual for their tastes.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at November 8, 2009 8:38 PM

They should start a paper called The Moon for those who like asses.

Posted by: Newshound at November 8, 2009 8:52 PM

Funny how The Daily Mail escapes your criticism, especially as it is reviled by most British people (except the Nazis who read it, of course).
Although now that I think about it, I'm not even slightly surprised that you think The Mail is above criticism.

I have posted many comments on this site, and I have spelt two words - TWO FUCKING WORDS - incorrectly within those various comments.
When you write “[note the correct spelling]” you may as well write “[I am an incorrigible pedant, who should be put on some sort of douchebag register]”.

Posted by: xantl at November 8, 2009 9:53 PM

I saw that picture.
I understand why you find it funny.
The reason is very simple:

You are a cunt.

The joke is that all of those things are supposed to be ‘bad’.
However, the joke fails to amuse me, because although a couple of them (on-demand abortions, for instance) would be considered ‘bad’ by everyone regardless of their politics, most of them sound absolutely brilliant to anyone with Liberal beliefs.
While this may seem stupid to you, I assure you, it makes complete sense to us.
Indeed, this is the very reason for politics - for people to believe in the importance of differing socioeconomic matters over others.
And because of our respective societies belief in freedom of speech, we each have the ability to express ourselves.

This may confuse or even enrage you, and if you feel an instinctive urge to retaliate, my response, while crude, will be a forceful statement along the lines of:

Fuck you/Fuck you in the ear/Fuck you and your fat wife/In the name of all that is and will ever be in this universe, and it's parallel counterparts - Fuck you.

And you have the right to respond in whatever way you see fit, be it debate, rhetoric or by abuse.

That is all.
Now go fuck yourself.

1983:
Over the border to East Germany. 137 soldiers per 10 kilometers in holes and concrete huts guarding their citizens? 3 hours of waiting, in the bus, in a concentration camp area. November, cold, foggy, group of women working on a field in the dark. Curving streets with huge pictures of Karl Marx, texted with communist scam. Dirt, filth, rubbish, insulated heating pipes, no food in the butcheries, no beer in the bars. NOTHING but sadness in the faces on the streets. If I asked for the time, people would tell me, but leave fast. Binoculars were everywhere, state security! What were they securing? The same as the 137 soldiers, that nobody leaves the country. That was 1984, Orwell in real life. The rest of this visit I would rather forget.
2009: The bastards are back, setting up parties in Germany, taking seats in houses never meant for them. An the Germans, as always take it and let it be. There could never be an ALAMO in this country. They know not what freedom is.

Excuse me, but my home state of California makes some of the finest cheese in America. It's one of the few points of pride I have about this crummy, moonbat-ridden state.

The billboards out here have a picture of a big hunk of Swiss or something, with the caption, "Why Wisconsin hates us."

But I think Aqua is referring to that processed pre-sliced stuff that people put on sandwiches and burgers. Indeed, that's bottom-of-the-barrel. Some of it doesn't even contain milk.

The leftist mind is driven by two conflicting characteristics--an impractical utopian idealism and lack of a sense of honor. As a rule, idealism and honor are joined. Don Quixote was not practical, but he was a man of honor: Sancho Panza scoffed at honor, but he was a realist. The typical leftist is a dreamer without honor, and that is troubling combination.

Much the same sort of talk can still be heard among the orc-minded; dreary and repetitive with hatred and contempt, too long removed from good to retain even verbal vigour, save in the ears of those to whom only the squalid sounds strong."

Ooh, ouch. Guess you told me. Just like you argue, you insult like a child.

In any case, better a nerd than an ignorant, foul-mouthed cretin who believes random things for no reason.

Go on, never doubt yourself,

Oh, is that what your 10:17 post was supposed to do? The one where you repeatedly used the word "fuck?"

I actually don't care about some cussing, but repeated use of foul language is the sign of an unthinking mind. You resort to it so easily, so casually, so much so that it loses any value and becomes as meaningless as everything else you post. Tolkien really had your kind pegged... "dreary and repetitive with hatred and contempt, too long removed from good to retain even verbal vigour, save in the ears of those to whom only the squalid sounds strong.

be a reactionary.

Don't use words you don't understand.

Heh, "thoughtful?" Is THAT what you think you are? You've repeatedly demonstrated that you don't think, you feel. And mostly what you feel is hate. You don't know history, you don't understand politics, you are feebly ignorant of economics, and you are incapable of forming even a basic logical argument. And yet you keep coming back here. Anyone with common sense or dignity would be embarrased to make the comments you do.

I've started to wonder about that... perhaps you're just masochistic. (shrug) Ah, well, whatever makes you happy. Me, I just like playing with you. I've shown over and over I can make you dance, puppet.

Have you ever considered that my reason my comments suck is because I don't think this site deserves anything other than my apathy?

Were this a serious debate, I would actually do research and try to be more coherent, but seeing as this is simply a place for people whose attitudes are stuck in the 1940s to lament the passing of a time when their beliefs were still relevant, I simply cannot be arsed.

At least I'm not a bitter, twisted joke of a man, spending hours of his time on the internet, taking his anger out on progressives, while ignoring his family, complaining that everything around him is turning to shit, while completely failing to appreciate his shortcomings.

You say absolutely nothing of any merit, you just bitch and moan about someone who is deliberately antagonising you.
Admittedly, you are less of a barking dog and more of a overfed squealing pig.

And for someone who believes there was never such as a thing as a right-wing dictatorship, you have no credibility when you tell me I know nothing of history.

The existential fear of unemployment that so blights free capitalist societies was also non-existent in communist Romania. In fact it was against the law not to have a job and the unemployed faced imprisonment/psychiatric re-education for "social parasitism". Moreover, thanks to central economic planning, the government was able to make sure that it was materially impossible for the populace to be exposed to "crass materialism". Party apparatchiks did indeed enjoy subsidised rents in luxurious villas and inter-war Parisian-style blocks of flats expropriated from the bourgeoisie. The lumpenproletariat also paid subsidised rents, but in rather less salubrious conditions - prefabricated concrete blocks. In some blocks of flats built to house peasants brought to the cities to work in the factories, there was no plumbing, with toilets situated outside in the yard. The inevitable result was that, rather than descend, say, five flights of stairs, residents would defecate in whatever receptacle was to hand and then toss their ordure directly out of the window. But at least they lived free of the existential fears that now oppress us in capitalist society.
