(Just Barely) Morning Briefs

Posted by Gregory of Yardale at November 20, 2009 9:55 AM

Good Morning Campers, Good Morning Lefty Rachel Maddow Impersonators,

Item Number One:
Deeply cool, a man who was evacuated at the age of five from South Vietnam after the communists (whom the progressive left were rooting for) took over has returned... as the Commander of a US Navy Destroyer.

"I thought that one day I would return but I really didn't expect to be returning as the commander of a Navy warship," CMDR Hung Ba Le said after stepping ashore Saturday. "It's an incredible personal honor."

A small victory for America, and a defeat to all those sanctimonious hippie cowards who wanted Le to be raised in a communist dictatorship. (The same sanctimonious hippie cowards who now control the White House and Congress.)

Item Number Two: Andrew Klavan mounts a defense of Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and Glenn Beck but I couldn't figure out how to embed the video.

Item Number Three:
In a sign of the times, Barack Obama --- who threw enormous gala White House celebrations in honor of Communist China and Moslem Ramadan --- has cut the size of the annual Hannukah dinner in half. You gotta wonder if the J-o-o-s are going to get the hint that this guy doesn't care too much for them, or at least not as much as he cares about Muslims and Communists.

Also... I'm sure Lao, Andy, and the rest of Tiger Beat's target demo are very excited that another Twilight movie opens today. In dishonor of that, I give you today's stinger:

Something about bloodsucking Eurotrash that drain the life out of regular people appeals to the progressive left.

Comments

In my mind someone like CMDR Hung Ba is more 'American' than someone like that native-born walking graffiti billboard of self-loathing Jeanine Garafolo.

I just had to.

Gotta Get one of these!

and Rasmussen has Dear leader presidential approval at -14% for the last 3 days

come on guys - spin that

#1 is cool (not counting Yardale's usual absurdist editorializing). I wonder if we'll see a day when an American naval commander from Iran cruises up the Strait of Hormuz?

As for Twilight, I've vaguely heard something. The last vampire movie I saw was Nosferatu.

Posted by: Lao at November 20, 2009 10:33 AM

Uh... okay... how is it absurd to note that 1.) sanctimonious sixties hippies were supporting the communists in Vietnam (Jane Fonda ring a bell?) and 2.) those same sanctimonious liberals are now in power in Washington (John Kerry, Bill Ayers' padawan Barack Obama).

Posted by: Anonymous at November 20, 2009 10:51 AM

So, explain this correctly please. Barack Obama is now tied to the anti-war movement of the Vietnam era because he lived near Bill Ayers and shares political affiliation with John Kerry? Wow, you are really struggling these days huh?

Odd that you rip on John Kerry for volunteering for war, and having the guts to help end it by telling the truth of what was happening, yet never say a word about Tancredo suffering from depression so he couldn't go, or Cheney's 6 deferments, Limbaugh's anal cist, Bush's family power shuffling him around in hiding.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 20, 2009 11:13 AM

IOW: The party (Democrat) and the ideology (far left) that wanted the communists to win in Vietnam is now the ruling party in Washington.

And there is considerable evidence that John Kerry (who spent less than 4 months in Vietna and ditched as soon as he could) was being rather fantastical when he claimed that US troops were raping and killing Vietnamese "in a manner reminiscent of Genghis Khan."

Posted by: Not the Pinko Anonymous at November 20, 2009 11:18 AM

I see that anon has learned Vietnam history in a public school setting. Try doing some research about lurch's purple hearts, they're not exactly CMH material.

Posted by: Farmer Ted at November 20, 2009 11:19 AM

Jane Fonda was never high on the list of respected voices against the war. She had to try to catch up to Tom Hayden. She was a Hollywood actress and the press jumped. What else is new?

The same people who tell the left that George Bush and his record can't be mentioned, try to tie Obama to Ayers.

Obama was not yet in high school when the Viet Nam war ended and Ayers was doing his revolution thing. Ayers had no influence on the anti-war left. He and his gang were regarded as fringe.

John Kerry is a Viet Nam vet. I know, you hate it that he turned against the war. So did millions of others including Walter Cronkite. Now there's a sanctimonious hippie if there ever was one.

Posted by: Lao at November 20, 2009 11:20 AM

Also anon let's not forget the millions of lives that were lost due to demoncrats defunding the war efforts in Vietnam,Cambodia and Laos. Your heroes have the blood of millions on their hands,I hope you feel better about yourself now.

Posted by: Farmer Ted at November 20, 2009 11:22 AM

Item number 1 is extremely cool, the commander must be insanely proud of looking at the shores of vietnam from the bridge of his invincible ship.

Posted by: Jay B at November 20, 2009 11:26 AM

Lao your assessment of cronkite is correct. How else could he go on the air and tell the American public that the US had lost the Tet offensive. Let's look at the body count: Vietcong 100,000+ dead...American loses 1,000. North Vietnam was ready to negitiate an end to the war until they saw croncite's report. They then changed their strategy from winning the war to winning the war through the news media. We all know how that truned out.

Posted by: Farmer Ted at November 20, 2009 11:27 AM

Iam wondering will there be a CHRISTmas tree in OUR house in DC this year. I seem to remember reading a story stating that our beloved commander in chief our beloved leader of this country, the leader of our christian founded nation doesnt celebrate CHRISTMAS but celebrates that made up holiday Kawanza.

Posted by: So What at November 20, 2009 11:31 AM

Ted would rather us still be there? How else do you think most wars are ended?

Posted by: Anonymous at November 20, 2009 11:34 AM

Obama was not yet in high school when the Viet Nam war ended and Ayers was doing his revolution thing. Ayers had no influence on the anti-war left. He and his gang were regarded as fringe.

NOT ANY MORE, MAINSTREAM IS MORE LIKE IT

Posted by: So What at November 20, 2009 11:37 AM

anon: You can include Bill Clinton lying to Fullbright his mentor and to his draft board.
Lets not forget the liar of the Gulf of Tonkin either.

Posted by: So What at November 20, 2009 11:42 AM

Anon most wars end with a victor and a vanquished. Unfortunately with the likes of lurch, fonda, cronkite, etc it ended in a technical defeat for America and emboldened our futrue enemies.

Posted by: Farmer Ted at November 20, 2009 11:59 AM

Yeah, Ayers is a such a "fringe figure" that he was made a tenured professor at the University of Illinois - Chicago, put in charge of a $50 million Annenberg Challenge to improve Chicago schools, and named Chicago Citizen of the Year in 1997.

Yeah, but he's just a crazy fringe figure no one in the left respects.

And John Kerry is honored as a Vietnam War Hero... by the Communist North Vietnamese.

Posted by: Exit Pursued by a Bear at November 20, 2009 12:01 PM

I John Kerry lead a secret mission into Cambodia Christmas of 68 ordered by Nixon....I remember the Cambodians celebrating Christmas with fireworks my gun boat was all lit up and it was exposing our position on the river.
Excuse me while I go dump. Nixon wasnt CIC Christmas of 68...he didnt become CIC until January of 69. His gunboat could not have made that trip or any trip into Cambodia at that time of the year, there was a damn fucking draft problem that far up the Mekong river for the type of patrol boat he "commanded".

For Anon who praises John Kerry for testifying against the war (an apparent reference to the Winter Soldier debacle):
The Washington Post and the Winter Soldiers

----------
On March 17, Media Life Magazine published an article about the difficulties facing the Washington Post, which recently announced that it would have to eliminate some eighty positions over the next year, or nearly 10% of its editors and reporters. The key reason for the Post's decline is a relentless drop in paying customers -- daily subscriptions have fallen 17% in the last ten years, from 816,474 in 1995 to 678,779 in 2005.
Media Life was careful not to suggest that the paper bears any responsibility for its own problems, describing the Post as "one of America's most celebrated newspapers, a Pulitzer Prize winner times over, and also among the best-managed." The article noted supportively that management "insists they will not cave into the pressures by compromising their high editorial standards." Media Life did observe that the Post's circulation "is sinking faster than that of many other newspapers around the country," but neglected to mention the fact that the Post's primary competitor, the conservative Washington Times, was racking up steady circulation gains during the same period -- a 3% increase in 2005 alone.

The topic of ideological bias at the Post does not appear in the Media Life article.

In December, the Post reviewed the film "Winter Soldier," a newly released 1970s agitprop piece documenting the Vietnam Veterans Against the War's horrific, unsubstantiated allegations of routine war crimes by U.S. troops in Vietnam. Perhaps the Post's "high editorial standards" were on vacation that day, because Ann Hornaday's review was a grotesquely biased valentine to the VVAW propagandists and their vicious film.

As the creator of the research web site WinterSoldier.com, I knew several things about the topic that Hornaday obviously didn't, so I fired off the following letter to the Post:

Ann Hornaday's review of the 1971 documentary film, "Winter Soldier" overlooks a rather important aspect of the tales of American atrocities in Vietnam the film records - the fact that after more than 34 years of investigation by the U.S. military, historians, researchers and journalists, not one of the "war crimes" alleged by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War during the "Winter Soldier Investigation" has ever been proven to be true.
Records available in the National Archives show that the House Committee on Armed Services directed the Department of Defense to conduct a "prompt review" of the Winter Soldier Investigation testimony in April 1971. Army investigators determined that 46 of the allegations, if true, would qualify as war crimes, and opened a case file for each. Three individuals could not be identified. The other 43 cases were resolved as follows: 25 individuals making the allegations "refused to provide factual data," 13 more provided information to investigators that "did not support the allegations," and the final 5 could not be located.

Records of the Naval investigation are not available in the Archives, but the respected historian Guenter Lewy included a summary of the Naval Investigative Service report on the event in his 1977 book, "America in Vietnam." Lewy noted the VVAW's "use of fake witnesses and the failure to cooperate with military authorities and to provide crucial details."

None of the military investigations resulted in any charges being filed.

Hornaday accepts the claims made at the Jane Fonda-funded conference at face value, writing, "Recreational killing of civilians, rape, arson, torture: They did it, or saw it, all." She describes the film as an "eloquent, unforgettable tale of profound moral reckoning," and singles out this remark:

"I didn't like being an animal," one veteran explains on the hearing dais. "And I didn't like seeing everyone else turned into an animal."

Hornaday is presumably unaware that she is quoting Steve Pitkin, the only "Winter Soldier" participant to file a legal affidavit about the events there. His affidavit states that VVAW leaders pressured him to testify about war crimes and atrocities that never took place. Pitkin now describes the Winter Soldier Investigation as "a pack of lies."

Touting the discredited propaganda of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War as an "eloquent, unforgettable tale of profound moral reckoning" furthers the perception that balanced political information is not to be found at The Post. More importantly, it does a real disservice to the honorable veterans of the Vietnam War.

And thanks GoY for posting the Klaven vid. Next to Zo, he's my favorite PJTV personality.

It's a sad state of affairs when the trolls are an important element to the success of a blog post to be called out by name in the post.

Eric...

No its not--this guy's a putz and people need to be reminded of it so they don't waste their time with him. This isn't like 'Red State', if you get my drift. He butted heads with a regular two nights ago and I commented on that around 700pm last night on the Open Thread (the one with the cartoon). In fact, that one is going right now--slowly--but going.

Nobody has the perfect blog, so if you don't agree, start your own--or have you? I was going to continue here but...wait, maybe I should check with you first..tell me what its OK to say. Now I'm afraid to continue...I might break Eric's rules.

A shame there's no good reason for him to shell Hanoi harbor at the moment.

Odd that you rip on John Kerry for volunteering for war, and having the guts to help end it by telling the truth of what was happening, blah blah blah.

Comparing our men to Genghis Khan and suggesting that they were doing nothing but marauding their way around Vietnam was "telling the truth about what was happening?"

Hey, idiot. My dad was over there. He didn't even wait to be drafted. He volunteered.

You don't find it a bit interesting that 90% of the men who actually personally served with Kerry question his version of what he did over there? No, of course you don't...today being "swift-boated" is somehow a bad thing.

I'd like to see you go down to the local Veterans' Hall and run your mouth like you did here. Let me know if you make it home in one piece. You talk like that to men who were "over there," and they will END you.

Posted by: Cylar at November 21, 2009 4:09 AM

Yep John Kerry hero, hell even Bill Clinton told the Israelis he was ready to grab a weapon jump into a ditch and kill palis,he was taking Jewish money at the time. He could see "fit" to defend Israel but not this country...fuck him to and you.At least as you say your dad volunteered. Why not follow your dads example. You are welcome to come and visit my local VFW and spew you ignorrance, hell we will cover your expenses, you clueless balless piece of shit, Your most likely an embarassment to you dad. You might want to ask him and you mother why there was a coat hangar sticking out of your forehead for the first couple of months you were breathing.

Posted by: SoWhat at November 21, 2009 6:56 AM

Actually, Cylar, only one of the men he served with thought John, He served in Vietnam, Kerry was fit for command. Sad that the democrat party stooped so low as to nominate him. But, then, it's what we expect from democrats. They haven't disappointed.
