Props to uberband U2, who felt that the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall warranted special recognition -- unlike Our Dear Leader of the (Not-So-) Free World, B. Hussen Obama, who declined Chancellor Merkel's invitation due to a hangnail, or pulled cerebrum, or perhaps it was an ear liposuction appointment.

But a razz to U2 for the ironic situation that ensued:

The band played a free concert Thursday at the city's Brandenburg Gate to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago. Ten-thousand tickets were distributed, but, in honoring one wall's demise, the organizers put up another one — literally.
A 12-foot-high metal fence draped with a white tarp was set up to keep people without a ticket from seeing the concert.
Some Berliners were heard shouting "Tear down this wall!" about the U2 concert wall.

Reagan would have been proud.

Allegedly there was a reason for concert organizer MTV to construct this New Berlin Wall:

...MTV said it worked with the local promoter, the city and police to install a temporary fence "around the site to ensure the safety and security of the attendees at the event as well as residents and businesses in the area".
U2's representatives declined to comment.

This all brings new meaning to the notion that freedom isn't free - even if it was intended to be.

d'OH!

U2 peaked with Joshua Tree, maybe Achtung Baby. Why are they still famous?

Comment is superfluous.

Would have been more ironic had we been there.

Freedom is NOT free. Everybody acts like we're supposed to lay around and do what ever we please with no consequences. I hate U2 as much as the next guy but WTF? Things cost money. Even a piece of fieces like Bono has bills to pay. Get off your ever widening ass and earn the price of a ticket or go and watch the pro fag concert with the gay kid singing about his two dads.

A free concert that you need a ticket to view. Hmmm....

U2 playing a concert celebrating liberty and freedom from statist government is an overload of irony in and of itself.

Bono has been guzzling the Goracle's Kool-Aid for some time. That is just the latest in his string of advocacy for state-fueled moonbattery.

You're almost there moonbattery. You're getting closer and closer, but you're not there yet.

“Our Dear Leader of the (Not-So-) Free World”

Aw, poor baby, let's back up the whambulance...
Seriously, is the author of the article a massive emo?

U2 suck.

And Aquatarkus appears up with another witty, insightful comment.

And Evil Otto appears up with another holier-than-thou retort

”This all brings new meaning to the notion that freedom isn't free”
You mean the notion that douchebag capitalists came up to justify going to war simply to make a profit?
Or the notion that white supremacists came up with to justify attacking poorer nations because they don't like to see foreigners believing in anyone other than Jesus?
I thought so.

(that sounds like the lyrics of an English, middle-class version of Rage Against the Machine...)

I don't mean to defend MTV, but actually, this comment makes some sense.

Come on, people. Just because the tickets were free, doesn't mean there was an unlimited amount of them to go around. There's going to be a finite amount of space available around the stage, as well as a finite number of bathrooms, a finite number of security personnel to keep control of the crowd, etc etc. Besides that, the City of Berlin probably has some kind of standing ordinance about how many people can be in a given area at a time. If a fire broke out (or a terrorist attack, whatever) there would need to be an evacuation plan in place for everyone's safety. Limiting the size of the crowd makes that easier. Besides, the people who showed up early enough to get hold of a ticket don't deserve to be crowded and bumped-into by all the johnny-come-latelys.

U2 may not be everyone's favorite group, but I've always liked most of their music - and let's face it - they ARE one of the bigger names in rock music and were part of the Second British Invasion of the early 80s, along with Duran Duran and other groups.

Love em or hate em, it's not like they are nobodies, and it's not unrealistic to think a lot of people would want to come hear the music.

Just a few thoughts.

You need to chill the hell out. Come on, man. We've talked about this. You and I. I know you're capable of better writing than this, and certainly of higher caliber than the other liberals who post frequently (Ghost, hey you guys, Lao, etc. Can't STAND those dipsticks.)

You been reading that Bible link I sent you? You calmed down and were writing some pretty good posts around that time.

Posted by: Cylar at November 9, 2009 1:33 AM

No, Cylar, he's not capable of better writing than this.

No, more like the notion that the supposed "tolerant" Leftist billionaire "entertainers" would care enough about "the poor" and freedom to give a free concert.
