Counter-Moonbattery Alert: Does ABC's 'V' Aim to Deconstruct Obamamania?
Posted by The MaryHunter at November 3, 2009 5:12 PM
One deserves to be a little suspicious in reading an article like this one from The Chicago Tribune (though the article is syndicated through McClatchy/Tribune News):
Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.
The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: "Why don't you show some respect?!" The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: "Embracing change is never easy."
So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait -- did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who's come here to eat us?
Welcome to ABC's "V," the most fascinating and bound to be the most controversial new show of the fall television season. Nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity, it's also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president's supporters and delight his detractors.
Certainly others have observed this symbolism, including NewsBusters, who noted that the producer of the mini-series has denied any connection with the Obot-Zombie/Dear Leader situation we see every day in the U.S.:
Others on both sides of the political spectrum may point to the visitors' explicit promises of hope, change and universal health care as a pointed reference to pledges of the Obama administration. But [Executive Producer Scott] Peters says the show has been in the works since 2007. Reality was “never really a factor,” he says. “There's no political message being shoved down anyone's throat.”
And, of course, it's a remake.
This all seems more like a self-fulfilling prophecy, but let's put it out there. Is this reporting a set-up by the MSM to squelch any allusion to the inanity of Obamamania that the Right might flame through this show, or is it an honest observation with potential political implications?

On a twip from ObotNot. Hat tip: DrudgeReport.com
20:10 UPDATE: Here's a link to the V page at ABC, thanks to SK.
Comments
If there's any "barbed commentary" in the show, my guess is it's purely unintentional.

This has nothing to do with Obama, nor has ABC given up on promoting Obamunism.
A quick search of the facts indicates that the cast list was announced by ABC on May 19, 2009.
Projects like this take months or years to develop, especially when you consider that the series this is a remake of was originally broadcast on NBC. There is no way to envision a project, assemble a team of producers, get funding and the green light, sign rights clearances with third parties, and put together a cast in the span of only a few months.
That means this project is not likely to have been conceived before late 2008 or early 2009, which is too early to be considered a reactionary move by ABC against Obamunism, in an attempt to appeal to the majority of American voters who believe this country is headed in the wrong direction.
I wouldn't be surprised if the head moonbats at ABC under-promote this show, so that it dies off before it can generate topical political discussion among the entertainment-consuming masses.

Then again, scripts can be tweaked and 'nuanced' quite a bit during filming. Though conceived in 2007 according to the producer, when was it shot? When was it edited? When were the last-minute retakes?

What's ABC? Never seen it.
Posted by: Tom at November 3, 2009 5:33 PM
Second thought: naah, ABC is probably just grimacing right now, hoping it goes away, and the State-Controlled Media are dispelling any right-wing spin by pumping out articles appearing to innocently make the connection, then dismissing it.

This show will surely get under Team 44's lizard thin skin....if it hasnt already. They no doubt have requested scripts and are reading ahead to edit.

If you check the name of the author (Glenn Garvin), I can guarantee that he's all right. He's a veteran Latin American correspondent for the Miami Herald and also did a lot of work for the libertarian magazine Reason. He spent approximately four to five years in Nicaragua during the Sandinista glory days in the 80s, and is wiser than anyone else I know as to the idiocy of Ortega and his pals. How he wound up as a TV critic at a Chicago rag, I have absolutely no idea. But check out a few of his articles at reason.com.

I always knew liberals were reptiles underneath.

Obviously, Obama is a saboteur commissioned by Dick Cheney.

I posted this message on the bulletin board in my condominium hallway….
Obama's Science Czar John Holdren said:
” The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being.”
Less than a half hour passed and it was gone! The Communists will tear down the truth so that their lies remain. If this is allowed to continue odds are this will leads to a violent purge and I do believe the Communists think they will win.

Oh, check out the line from the guy who is a Visitor Youth or something. "We're just spreading hope!"
LMAO!
It should play the trailer as soon as the page loads.

If the Obama administration takes offense and starts to lean on them I hope they do an episode or two devoted to that, too.

SK, thanks for the show link, I put it up.

There are almost too many parallels with Obama and his policies and this show for them to be purely coincidental. The leader of the Visitors is a thin-skinned reptile who can't tolerate any sort of media scrutiny and will only work with a reporter who doesn't ask any tough questions. She aspeaks in saccharine platitudes. She promises universal health care in exchange for cooperation. The visitors actively seek to co-opt the kids in spreading their message (Gee, have we seen the Obamunists do THAT before?) And the people who are falling for the Visitor's words of "hope" are JUST like the ding-a-lings that voted for "hope and change".
On the other hand, it could just be a general allegory for Communism, and that's why it looks so much like it is about Obama...

Glad to be of help, TMH! :)

I saw it. There's too much there to be coincidental. It was hilarious.
Key word: DEVOTION

I saw it tonight, and couldn't believe it. They cut a lot closer to the bone than I thought ever, ever would have been allowed on ABC. I bet it winds up on Fox or SyFy. I think this will be a bit more of a hot potato than ABC will want to handle.

I was all over the abc.com website a few minutes ago hoping it would let me view the episode, but no dice - just ten or so promotional "shorts." I'm sure it's much, much too early for it to show up on Hulu or anywhere else. Wonder if it will be released on DVD or some other pay-to-view format? I wouldn't mind slamming a few bucks on the counter to watch it, just don't know where.
Not having cable anymore...blows.

It is a remake and some of the initial adulation of the Visitors was in the original 1983 version, but the remake has definitely been tweaked to parallel Obamamania. Because it follows the original plot line fairly well, I think the temptation was overwhelming to make it more relevant by adding some catch phrases from the Obama campaign. They really grab your attention because of the creepy similarity.

Saw that last night and was pleasantly suprised to see how visionary the writers were - they supposedly wrote all this back in 2007-2008 before Obamania took off. The Universal Healthcare thing was hilarious. The only thing that would have made it better would have been using an Obama lookalike as the V's leader instead of that woman. Though I can imagine that would have created howls of protest from the left.

Cylar, they will probably put the full episodes on the ABC website for the show after they air.
Posted by: SK at November 4, 2009 7:36 AM
Also funny was the guy who stumbled into the church with the photos - there was a huge bloody hole in his gut and he said the V's did it to him. Then he died after giving the photos to the priest. Now thats what I call Universal Healthcare! LOL!

in 1983, when V first came out they compared it to a deconstruction of Ronald Regan and the fascism of the American right, since liberals place republicans in the same light as NAZIs. Then came as the series continued the SS, NAZI comparisons got worse since the story basically followed WW2, concentration camps and fascist government takeover. Jerry Falwell was attacked etc etc.
today, nobody believes the holocaust happened, so to kids today they won't get it.
The media is freaking retarded.
and holly weird is out of idea.
"THERE FREAKING LIZARDS IN HUMAN DISGUISES"
which really made no sense in 1983 either after the big reveal with 'Diana'.
now 25+ years later, wow its been that long, they remake V, and compare it to obama, darn they missed George Bush by a few years. since he turned into obama the last 2 years of his presidency.
i predict V tanks hard in the ratings.

some of the leftys in the show's forum are getting a bit testy...or should I say squirming like lizards...?

It was great!
I've been a fan of Morena Baccarin ever since her work as Inara on 'Firefly'/ 'Serenity' (And was also pleased to note that her even cooler castmate from that series, Alan Tudyk, is also in this) and she is very effective here as the alien leader Ana. You can tell that, much like Obama, beneath her ear- tickling platitudes, she has some VERY undesirable inner motives. Another part I really liked, which definitely spoke a lot of truth about Obama's cult of personality, was when the two priests are talking, and the younger one points out that the humans' adoration of the Visitors could repidly turn into idolatrous worship of them. I regrettably nodded off when there was about 15 minutes left of the show (Word to the wise: If you're trying to watch any TV series at night longer than half an hour, do NOT sit or lie in a very comfortable position), so I hope it will soon be up on the website for us all to watch.
