USA Surrenders Control of Internet
Posted by Van Helsing at October 3, 2009 1:34 PM
When it comes to disastrous presidencies, Dhimmi Carter's won't be easy to top. But Chairman Zero is up to the task. Remember when Dim Jimmy gave away the Panama Canal? Our current kakistocracy has followed suit by surrendering the Internet:
After complaints about American dominance of the internet and growing disquiet in some parts of the world, Washington has said it will relinquish some control over the way the network is run and allow foreign governments more of a say in the future of the system.
Icann — the official body that ultimately controls the development of the internet thanks to its oversight of web addresses such as .com, .net and .org — said today that it was ending its agreement with the US government.
The deal, part of a contract negotiated with the US department of commerce, effectively pushes California-based Icann towards a new status as an international body with greater representation from companies and governments around the globe.
Icann had previously been operating under the auspices of the American government, which had control of the net thanks to its initial role in developing the underlying technologies used for connecting computers together.
But the fresh focus will give other countries a more prominent role in determining what takes place online, and even the way in which it happens — opening the door for a virtual United Nations, where many officials gather to discuss potential changes to the internet.
Much as US Government control of anything is to be distrusted, control by foreign governments is invariably worse.
Viviane Reding, the EU's commissioner for information society and media, said she was pleased that Washington chose to make the shift.
"I welcome the US administration's decision to adapt Icann's key role in internet governance to the reality of the 21st century," she said.
That is, the reality of America having forsaken its leadership role in favor of the self-abasement of Hopey Change.
Also delighted are Arabs and the communist Chinese, who will now have input in how the Internet is administrated. Enjoy criticizing Islamic terrorists and using controversial words like "democracy" while you're still able.
On a tip from Conan.

Well, it's been fun blogging while it lasted.
Dope & Change won't have to declare an "emergency" to shut down Internet sites...I-CON will do it for him.
I'm looking forward to traveling on the "Information Gravel Road" ...aren't you?

People with more bandwidth will have to give up their bandwidth or be charged an extra UN tax to help the give blackberries to the Masai in Africa. http://goafrica.about.com/library/bl.maasai.htm
I kid, but you know what happens with the most sarcastic joking people on the right do. It becomes the policy and law laid down by the left. ;)

This has the potential to become the biggest "fairness" doctrine of all.
This is another example of handing over technology developed by individuals working under the U.S. free-market system to incompetent governments devoted to the destruction of enterprise and free-speech.
If this had happened under Bush, the left-wing would have escalated their obscenities, vile insults, street vandalism and number of assassination films by an order of magnitude.

I don't know if you're aware or not, but the UN did try to pull this stunt about two years ago. Fortunately, we had men of integrity like John Bolton representing us who told them to get bent.

Now is it time to relieve ourselves of this scumbag?
When the info stops flowing we lose.
Now we know why the second amendment really exists.
Set up the hanging tree before its to late.

This can't have a good result. Kiss your internet first amendment rights goodbye.

I was not aware that Bolton had blocked a UN attempt to mitigate the web.
Its interesting that the basic freedoms that inevitably derive from U.S. technological innovations, and that the left uses and takes for granted, is most often protected by more decent people on the right.
