Unlike ManBearPig, Pollution in China Is Real
Posted by Gregory of Yardale at October 25, 2009 8:29 AM
In an Award-Winning Photo Essay, photographer Lu Guang documents the toll of pollution on Communist China, (the country much-admired by Neo-Marxists like the New York Times Thomas Friedman and Professional Teleprompter Reader B. Hussein Obama.) The photos below are just a few from a large collection.

A sane person would ask, why is the Global Green movement not meeting in Copenhagen to discuss this? Why is the Global Green movement obsessed with eliminating the harmless, nay, life-sustaining, gas C02 while giving China a complete pass? How does Thomas Friedman get away with praising China for its embrace of "Green Technology" when the amount of pollution China produces is this massive?
One would almost suspect that the goal of the Global Green Movement isn't to help clean the Earth's environment, but rather to cripple what remains of Western Liberal Democracy and Free Enterprise to the benefit of collectivized, autocratic systems of government.
And maybe conservatives have a point that the obsession with CO2 emissions is a blinding distraction from real environmental concerns that could be ameliorated at far less cost.
I know, crazy talk.

I know what comment will be made, I'm going to count to see how many it takes to get there.

Yikes. All this talk of the environment and global warming is just more wealth restribution.
If people were really that concerned about recyling and keeping the planet clean, they'd do it, all over the world.
When I was in Rome it was a filthy dirty city, it looked like Los Angeles or any dirty downtown city.
Government regulations don't create a town that's clean, the private sector and the people do. If your house is filthy enough, you clean it up. Same with a town.
Talk to someone who works with the local dump and they'll tell you how much stuff is thrown away. Most of these so called ECO companies are full of phony moonbats who talk out of both sides of their mouths.

Hey! Remember when someone quoted an environmentalist who said that you wouldn't be able to live in a city without wearing protective gear because of the pollution levels and you guys all scoffed?
Turned out they were right, just for a different country! How about that.

Keep supporting your local Wal-mart. Actually, I used to work for a spa manufacturer, a few years ago their philosophy changed from "manufacture a quality product for a competitive cost" to, "make it cheaper cheaper cheaper". There were quality American made parts available, but the cost made the product less competitive, so we ended up buying all Chinese, and adding to the world problem. I endured as long as I could with their philosophy. (who needs a research engineer when all you care about is cost?) Today, I just sit on my butt, collect unemployment, apply for jobs online, and rant on moonbattery. What could I possibly have to complain about?

Hey AL GORE,GREENPEACE,SIERRA CLUB,HOLLYWEIRDOS, the DRAGON IS THE #1 POLUTER IN THEIR WORLD WHY ARE YOU NOT DOING ANYTHONG ABOUT IT?

They should put up air monitoring stations along the coast of California....we get all this lovely stuff coming right at us.Oh, wait they already have them...
And that begs the question...why aren't they sharing the info on the "news" every single night?
Ah, yes, rhetorical...
Perhaps, though, the pollution explains Nancy Pelosi and the evil Waxulon 6?

I read some of the comments on the website for this photo essay - much of it was the "humans are a cancer on Mother Earth" nonsense. Again, we see none of these little eco-tumors volunteering to be first in line at the disintegration chamber.

I'll bite...
Rampant mercantilism by Western powers in the 19th century deliberately stunted the industrial growth of China so that they could use it as an easy market for their manufactured products. Now that China has grown strong enough to cast off that mercantile influence they are rapidly industrializing along the same lines the West did a hundred years ago. Their higher level of pollution simply reflects a compressed time scale until they get to higher-level manufacturing. So it'll pass on its own...
(I agree with about 90% percent of the above statement, but as long as there's a demand for high-pollutin' goods, somebody is going to make them.)

Remember when environmentalism was championed by decent people who simply wanted us to appreciate the natural world, and act as benevolent stewards for future generations? Remember when not dumping toxic waste in the water was about protecting the water and public health, rather than a side-channel attack on industry itself?
That movement is dead. Environmentalism is no longer about the environment; the far left has hijacked it as a means to exert control, destroy economic activity, and champion perverted notions of social justice using taxpayer funds.
The green movement is now run by enviro-Marxists, for enviro-Marxists. Since every human activity has some relation to the environment, even on a distant level, the enviro-Marxists can now use the green movement as an excuse to regulate every facet of our lives, using nebulous criteria to avert some invented harm that nobody can really seem to demonstrate. Of course, when they talk about regulation, it is really about crippling the institutions of capitalism and freedom that allowed us to improve our standard of living as we moved out of the straw huts of the dark ages.
Remember when the air was clear, the water pure, all food organic and GM-free, and industry never used natural resources to better the human condition? We were living in caves and life expectancy was around 30.

Gotta agree with you there. Hard to identify as an environmentalist these days without someone thinking you're an anti-corporate idiot. I do support some anti-pollution regulation, but it should be balanced with the needs of industry.

Rampant mercantilism by Western powers in the 19th century deliberately stunted the industrial growth of China so that they could use it as an easy market for their manufactured products.
Good point. For example, the Forbes family ran shiploads of opium to China, becoming enormously wealthy in the process, despite the cries of liberals for them to separate themselves from that "dirty" money.
One of our most liberal Senators, John Forbes Kerry, still sits on a pile of opium loot he has yet to disgorge himself from while criticizing others for similar behavior.
Their higher level of pollution simply reflects a compressed time scale until they get to higher-level manufacturing. So it'll pass on its own
So it is okay to let ecomoonbats in our own country destroy jobs that Americans need, while giving China a pass for the same activity?
You just proved my above point. This isn't about protecting people from pollution - it is about social justice, which is why China gets to poison its people without protest from liberals, while we can't even drill for oil at home in an environmentally sound manner. And yes, American drilling is the cleanest in the world, yet we still can't do it.
Instead, the liberals prefer haphazard drilling in foreign nations, often funded by the US taxpayer, as is the case of the Soros-linked Petrobras offshore rig that received $2B in 0% interest loans from the US Government.
Out of sight, out of mind. Liberalism is about feeling good, rather than actually making progress.
Those factories would never be allowed to operate here. Our citizens demanded factories that don't poison them, which our technology has made possible. We still can't build clean factories here, since ecomoonbats are more concerned about endangered bark beetles than making sure Americans can earn a living.

Excellent post!
You hit the nail right on the head.
The trick is to keep hammering away at this truth until it comes out.

The reason why enviromoonbats don't raise a big stink over China's pollution is the same reason why the LGBT community is dead silent whenever Muslims terrorize and kill homosexuals. Namely, they can't hit the free world with guilt with it, so why even bother?

"ran shiploads of opium to China"
Ok, that's almost on point, but I think you need to review what industrial mercantilism was. Preventing China from outlawing the sale of opium was certainly part of it, but it went far deeper then that. At the time, most people (conservative AND liberal) supported mercantilism.

All people in power got that way by disregarding the rules. The Kennedy's are the example. Rules are for the "little" people. Screw it. And people wonder why I import automatic weapons. Just being a Kennedy, Bush, Kerry.... welcome to the real world.

About 14 or so coalminers die everyday in China's coalmines. But there's at least 10 times that number waiting to be hired to take their place. No MSHA or OSHA to regulate working conditions. Is unfortunate that just about every product we can purchase is made in China. I've noticed that even some fish and seafood indicates on the label--farm raised in China. I won't buy it. I will if it says farm raised in USA or Canada, because at least they have governments who inspect. But that doesn't mean its safe--just look at the peanut company who knew some of its products were unsafe and lots of people got sick.
And all retailers sell China made products--Wal Mart, Target, K-Mart (K-Sears?) Kohl's, who ever. Supposedly their buyers are supposed to inspect the factories, but with thousands of them, who has the resources to inspect each and every one of them. Slave wages, slave labor, deplorable working conditions. The list goes on. But I can't afford to lose sleep over it. It's unfortuante, but we all have choices to make. I bought a used comforter a few weeks ago at a church youth group yard sale. The tag indicates "made in the USA." Can't help wonder how old it is.

If you support capitalism, then you support the growth of industry in China. It's simply the natural result of capitalism. Even if the "environmental" costs were lowered in the US, the lower labor cost more then makes up for it.

From the Oxford English dictionary:
mercantilism |ˈmərkəntiˌlizəm; -ˌtē-; -ˌtī-|
noun
belief in the benefits of profitable trading; commercialism.
• chiefly historical the economic theory that trade generates wealth and is stimulated by the accumulation of profitable balances, which a government should encourage by means of protectionism.
---
Mercantilism is not the same thing as the Capitalism of the 19th century. The Left has always confused Capitalism with Mercantilism as is demonstrated by "hey you guys."
Mercantilism was the dominant European economic model from the 16th to 18th centuries and it's very essence was the belief in government intervention and control of the economy. Monopolies such as the Hudson Bay Company which existed through government protectionism were mercantilist. Mercantilism was economic nationalism. It had nothing to do with the capitalism of the 19th century. Capitalism of the 19th century was the outgrowth, not of economic nationalism wherein the government charters monopolies and uses the power of government to maintain that monopoly - 19th century capitalism was the natural outgrowth of the industry of free people whose society has rejected all the ideas that mercantilism was based on - all powerful government, government enforced monopolies, and protectionism. All of those ideas were consciously rejected and the ideas of people like Adam Smith were embraced in the 19th century.
The Left has always done it's best to confuse Mercantilism with Capitalism in people's minds. "hey you guys" has decided to do just that in this thread. Mercantilism is the Marxist way of viewing capitalism. There is business and then there is the State which supports business; the State as the superstructure of Capital, in Marxist parlance. The Left confuses Capitalism with Mercantilism.
China's industries are state chartered and protected industries and do fit into the Mercantilist model. The Left confuses Mercantilism with Capitalism but the form of government the Left prefers, all powerful, is what creates a Mercantilist structure.
Capitalism is what happens when people live in society where individual rights are protected by law and because of this people can create, work and live as they wish to. Capital is created and more and better things are invented and the Capital created keeps building and being invested in better ideas and new discoveries and this "Capital" that keeps on building becomes a larger and stronger foundation of the growth of a stronger economy that enriches all of lives.
China's economy has nothing to do with Capitalism. Their pollution isn't "the natural result of Capitalism." It is the result of a collectivist form of government which has no respect for individual rights. No one there can sue for damages done to them and their property by these State industries. None of them can oppose the State. They have none of the institutions of a free society to protect their lives from what the Rulers of their collectivist State deem to be in their interests.
But it is exactly that state of affairs, where the State decides what is in our interests and there is no recourse to the State, which our Leftists would take the United States.
