Seeing Things From The Other Side
Posted by Gregory of Yardale at October 25, 2009 4:05 PM
It is always a useful intellectual exercise to consider that the opposite of what one believes may be true. This ability to question our own beliefs is one of the things that separates us from the trolls.
In that spirit, I present this article by Steven Rattner, Chairman Zero's former "Car Czar." Rattner explains the other side's point of view on the Government Takeover of General Motors and Chrysler. If one were to take Rattner's perspective at face value, one would be left with the following impressions:
- The Car Czar and his team were the smartest, most selfless, perfect, and dedicated people in the world who did a flawless jobs under extreme conditions*.
- The managers of the car companies, on the other hand, were just stupid and greedy.
- The Car Czar and his team were almost monastically averse to politics, and were shocked when people noticed that their bailout plans overwhelmingly favored the Democrats' UAW allies and other constituencies because political considerations had never entered their perfect, innocent heads.
- Even though the Government and the Unions ended up owning 80% of GM, there was nothing at all socialist about the takeover they foisted on the car companies
- Obama was brilliant and decisive; even more wonderful than Andrea Mitchell thinks he is.
- The creditors who lost billions deserved it because they were greedy
- The Unions were completely blameless for the auto companies problems, and the fact that they came out the winners in the government shakeout had nothing to do with politics
So, if you want, read the article. It may change your mind about some aspects of the nationalization of the auto industry; you may write-it-off as self-serving bullcrap from an Obamunist apparatchik; or you can take some points into consideration and discard others.
(*And by "extreme conditions" I mean Rattner tells us that sometimes they had to work late [poor dears] and even buy their own sandwiches for meetings [such deprviation!])
Comments
The only question which remains: is Rattner merely a master BS artist, or is he so drunk on his own Kool-Aid as to actually believe this nonsense?

"This ability to question our own beliefs is one of the things that separates us from the trolls."
You actually think you abandoned your usual posturing and questioned your own beliefs? Very interesting.

Had to believe this comes from a United States Senator...So far removed from common sense it isn't funny...

Did I miss something? Was the right clamoring for more troops in Afghanistan before Obama took office?

Ah, the "look over there, something distracting!" defense.
We're for the President following the advice of his generals. It wouldn't be an issue if Bush was still in power, because more troops would already be on the way.
Obama made a pledge during the campaign to focus on Afghanistan and listen to the advice of his generals. Do you expect him to keep his word, Nameless? Or was it just another empty promise, made solely to get himself elected, like so many others.

Otto, if a "distraction" was made it was SK who raised the topic.
"Listen to advice" does not mean rubber stamp that advice.

I posted that link in lieu of their being a recent open thread at the time I posted it, asshole.
Now, toddle off back to Kos or HuffPo or wherever you and your fellow Marxist liberal friends rub each others skulls together in a vain effort to generate a thought that dares goes outside the bounds of "EVERYTHING IS BUSH'S FAULT!!"

No, it apparently means sit with his thumb up his sorry ass while our men and women fight and die without any support or help from this jug-eared freak and his fellow Red comrades.
Posted by: SK at October 25, 2009 5:58 PM
Oh laugh, laugh, laugh. Did I even mention Bush? No, I mentioned the right. Look who is distracting now.

Are you able to do anything besides call names? Try reading.
Obama has authorized Afghanistan troop increases that more than double the number who were there when he took office.
Posted by: Anonymous at October 25, 2009 6:09 PM
No, you read:
Still, it suggests that a significant number of support troops, in addition to combat forces, would be needed to meet commanders' demands. It also underscores the growing strain on U.S. ground troops, raising practical questions about how the Army and Marine Corps would meet a request from Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan.
That is where the majority of the wear on the troops on the ground comes in. I know; I was in Afghanistan in a support capacity 21/2 years ago.
Support troops take a great deal of strain of the combat forces but an increase of combat forces has not been approved or deployed to the region. Nor have any further mechanized infantry, etc.
In short, the matter of Afghanistan has NOT been settled. This is more prevarication from the Obama administration and their liberal outlets i.e. WaPo.

Authorizing and actually following through are two different worlds for BO.
If you have not noticed, to date, he has not followed through on much of anything or equally accomplished much positive change.
Posted by: Oiao at October 25, 2009 6:18 PM
An astute point, Oiao. This cretin hasn't done a damned thing good for this nation or our troops since taking office. All he cares about is his Marxist agenda and furthering it no matter who gets hurt in the process.
The 52% of Americans who voted for this loser should be felling some serious voter's remorse if they have a brain their heads.
Posted by: SK at October 25, 2009 6:28 PM
Contrary to what you believe re public opinion on Afghanistan:
"When the question is shifted to a potential escalation of the Afghan war, overall opposition broadens. Asked how they feel about “sending additional U.S. troops” into the conflict, exactly half of Americans — 50 percent — say they oppose the idea, while 41 percent support it.
Party differences are once again stark, as Democrats oppose the escalation by a 62 percent to 30 percent margin, and Republicans support the troop increase by a 58 percent to 31 percent margin. Almost 6 in 10 independents (58 percent) oppose the idea."

The right blew off Afghanistan for years. The last admin was asked for more troops and declined. While I believe we need to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan, doing it carefully is neccessary. We all know Al Qaeda is not in either country, and all we are doing is propping up puppet governments. As for McChrystal requesting troops, his record is not that good. going back to the Tillman scandal.
So, what to do? Withdrawl...now, and chalk it up as victory.
Posted by: Anonymous at October 25, 2009 7:16 PM
Yes and they might just feel that way because this administration has not been supporting the war or the troops nor has their lapdog media.
Instead of a ridiculous and distracting war on Fox News, Chairman Zero should be more focused on an actual war where American men and womens lives are at risk.

We don't know who is and who is not on our side. That is why you don't start wars with a tactic. Combined we have lost nearly 5000 soldiers, and the enemy is across the globe. Repeating the errors of Bush/Cheney is not a good plan. They "dithered" if you will.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 25, 2009 5:46 PM
Obama meant he would "hear" the advice not actually listen to it, he obviously mis-spoke.
As for a rubber stamp, give me a break. He has had many months to get the information he needed. He should be getting briefed on this every morning. When the report came in from the line he should have been able to get everybody in a room and decide within a day or two. Even not knowing who is going to be the leader over there isn't that big a deal, it will be one of the 2--or both. The solutions are not going to that different. It is obvious Obama has never had to actually produce/accomplish anything in his career.
Obama need to lead, follow or get the f out of the way. If we want to help in Afganistan-send more troops. Otherwise let's bring them all home so they aren't just waiting to get killed. Personally I would stay and complete our goal.

When "anti-war" leftwingers (and paleoconservatives) denigrate their own country at every opportunity and then suggest war strategy... you have to laugh at the Orwellian newspeak.
LOL

The BO Administration will be know, not so kindly, by history as 1) worse than Carter and 2) a 'do nothing' amature troup of 'ditherers'.
History will aptly provide credit for the labeling of the BO Bunch as 'ditherers' to one Richard Cheney, and recognize him for being accurate in his assesment.
