Is Holder's Justice Dept. Doing Something... *ssshhhh* Illegal?

Posted by The MaryHunter at October 8, 2009 6:20 PM

In case you missed it on Rush Limbaugh or Red County today: Our Attorney General, Reichsführer-SS Eric Holder, may well be breaking new ground in Justice Department unscrupulousness by hiring -- viz., "paying with taxpayer dollars" -- wackjob liberal bloggers to seek out and troll-poop on anti-Obama Administration media reports and blog posts.

As reported at The Muffled Oar, a blog that first broke the story of Holder's secretive blogging unit -- dubbed the "Blog Squad" by blogger Isaac Muzzey -- Holder has housed this unit in the Office of Public Affairs at the Department of Justice. It also appears that former John Edwards staffer Tracy Russo is part of this special unit.

From The Muffled Oar, who broke the story last Friday:

Not only is the Department of Justice Blog Squad going to reach out to nontraditional media like TPM Muckraker or the Muffled Oar, but they are also tasked with fostering anonymous comments at conservative leaning blogs such as the Free Republic. They are also tasked with fostering anonymous comments, or comments under pseudonyms, at newspaper websites with stories critical of the Department of Justice, Holder and President Obama.

Does this sound legal to you, dear reader? I suppose it could be considered so, if, like Führer Obama, you simply consider taxpayer dollars as your own, to do with as you please - even hand out to screaming rioters. For more on the legal issues raised, see NRO's the corner blog.

Clearly it's time for an investigation. Of course, who could possibly do that? The Justice Department, with it's unimpeachably incorruptible AG, could investigate itself. Or the Democrat Congress -- the most transparent, hard-working, and ethical Congress in decades -- could appoint a Special Prosecutor.

Either of these sound about as likely as Obama singing The Star-Spangled Banner from memory whilst pulling a rabbit out of Happy Joe Biden's arse. Until then, dear reader, the writers at Moonbattery.com will continue to taunt the Blog Squad to no end.

Comments

Conservative bloggers need to band together and sift through their logs to find comments coming from IP addresses allocated to the government.

If thousands of conservative bloggers could pool their logs, disclosing only the first three octets of IPs registered to the government (for privacy reasons) which made moonbatty posts, we might see a massive pattern of sockpuppetry emerge.

The IP ranges used by Obama's plumbers would have a extremely high number of posts of predictable moonbatty content - too high, in fact, to be simply attributable to bureaucrats slacking on the job. If we can show this level of post density from government IP ranges, this could be a huge scandal which helps sink this administration even further.

Some prominent conservative needs to spearhead the effort to ferret out where the astroturf is coming from.

Malkin, want to take on this job?

This is as creepy as it gets. Using taxpayer money to pay people to spam conservative sites? I'll bet some of the lefties that blog here are part of that crew.

Here's a question for Countermoonbat, how does one know what range of IP addresses are reserved for the government?

Posted by: Judith M. at October 8, 2009 7:06 PM

LOL - the perfect paranoia.

Go ahead, look me up, I am one of the regular lefties here.

Darkness has truely descended on Washington. Know what I'm sayin'? Hehe.

Posted by: Tom at October 8, 2009 7:14 PM

Aah, yes, Lao... but of course, you COULD be someone from the Blog Squad, dressed up to LOOK like our dear friend Lao.

Can you answer me this question: What is the airspeed of an unladen donkey?

This will prove your verity.

Posted by: pomalom at October 8, 2009 7:17 PM

Hey, since paranoia is the word of the day let me give you some more. Maybe some of your most prominent moonbatterers are IN FACT, government plants who are spewing garbage to make the right look bad.

I've often thought that the easiest way to get a million more votes for the Democrats would be to give a million undecided, but intelligent, voters, the full contents of a day's worth of Moonbattery.

Posted by: Lao at October 8, 2009 7:19 PM

Yuck it up, Lao, but it's not paranoia if people really are out to get ya, and if this can be proven, it will be scandal of mammoth proportions.

Posted by: Judith M. at October 8, 2009 7:30 PM

Honestly this doesn't suprise me after the whole Flag @ gov thing went out to silence critics of the Liar In Chief.

It's just one more issue which proves how pathetic communism and it's marxist alies like Odumbo are when it come to defending thier attempts to ruin this country.

Posted by: Michelle at October 8, 2009 7:43 PM

Lao is so quick to dismiss misconduct by his own kind, but I bet he was one of the screechers after the Brooks Brothers riot in 2000.

Judith M. - Every IP address is registered to a specific entity via the public WHOIS database. The US government has its IPs registered in its own name, unlike most private customers whose IP addresses are registered to their ISP.

Common web statistics software already can profile the distribution of IP addresses, and identify which ones came from US government ranges (just like software can figure out what country an IP is coming from, or if it belongs to a university, etc.)

Since the story states that this dirty tricks unit is operating from within the DOJ, they should be on government IPs, unlike independent contractors who would have their own. While the DOJ could conceivably hire outside astroturfers, these payments would be a lot harder to hide than simply re-assigning internal PR staff to engage in astroturfing.

I doubt this ill-conceived attempt at deception is masking its IPs. If they are, it would be harder to catch (since they wouldn't come from .gov IPs, but would still be clustered in certain private IPs), but would make for a much larger scandal.

The technology to root out troublesome patterns in commenting isn't new. Some of the anti-spam technology was originally developed to find high volumes of posts coming from a spammer's server, which has an IP:post ratio similar to what a massive astroturf squad would have. That software might be helpful here.

Posted by: Anonymous Countermoonbat at October 8, 2009 7:44 PM

Peer Guardian's database has a pretty extensive database of government IP addresses.

Posted by: I'm A Lasagna Hog at October 8, 2009 7:50 PM

Also, I should say I don't think they're doing this potentially illegal stuff (this, the flag@ site) on purpose. I think the people in charge just plain don't have a clue.

Posted by: I'm A Lasagna Hog at October 8, 2009 7:53 PM

This should definitely be checked into. Wouldn't it be hilarious to find out that not only the lefty trolls were on the government dole, but some of the more repugnantly racist posters were as well? It's feeling more and more like 1984 every day.

Posted by: Judith M. at October 8, 2009 7:56 PM

"I think the people in charge just plain don't have a clue."

LOL! Oh good, I feel much better now.

Posted by: Judith M. at October 8, 2009 7:58 PM

As if some anon troll is going to change minds. But hey... bring it on. I actually thought they were already doing this with the common scripted talking points you often see trolls reciting.

They are a bit paranoid that people are going to do to them what they did to Bush. They are getting out Alinskied and desperate.

Posted by: IOpian at October 8, 2009 8:10 PM

And all this time we thought the CPUSA signed Wellstone's checks.

Hey! Wait just a doggone minute there, skippy......

Posted by: Anonymous at October 8, 2009 8:18 PM

It's pretty easy.. those who spew liberal talking points and can't hold a conversation because they can't be defended are highly suspicious. Pay people to tell a lie, it'll last as long as you push it. I'm all for the IP checks, a couple hundred thousand posts linked to the white house would be a MASSIVE scandal.

Posted by: Jay B. at October 8, 2009 8:27 PM

Racy Tusso, Eric Smolder, and Maobama can all kiss my bloomin' arss! This is nothing compared to what they said about Bush.

Holder will have bus tire tracks on his back within a year, two at the most.

Posted by: mega at October 8, 2009 9:14 PM

Let the "Blog Squad" knock on my door. I think the entire Obama administration is a bunch of dirty, lying, thieving, Constitution destroying flaming communists who are no better than f**king terrorists.

And that includes Holder-n-jerkhispenis; he can kiss my lily white ass on his way to hell, and I don't care WHO tells the worthless SOB what I think.

To me this indicates the Zero administration is a den of cowards - talk about paranoid. If the little silly liberal 'Blog Squad' has a clue about who their enemies really are, then they'd better be speaking moooslim and be cruising the mooooslim sites.

Posted by: Jimbo at October 8, 2009 9:14 PM

This is the kind of story that requires better evidence.

Posted by: Fiberal at October 8, 2009 9:17 PM

As if some anon troll is going to change minds. But hey... bring it on.

A lie, when repeated often enough, becomes truth in the minds of the sheeple.

See, for example, the number of uninsured. It is always changing, and when the left spews that bogus statistic, they fail to remove the illegal aliens, those who can afford insurance but don't want it, those who are already eligible for government insurance but fail to register, and those who could afford insurance if they prioritized needs before wants.

Sadly, hundreds of millions of Americans actually believe that close to 50 million people don't have insurance because the system was purposefully designed to lock them out of access to coverage.

What you do for "amusement" seems obvious Jack. It isn't heckling, nor enterprising and wouldn't exactly be in private.

Yeah.....so did Jimmy Carter and Al Gore. President Obama is in good company.

The political NPP jumped the shark a long time ago.

Posted by: TonyD95B at October 9, 2009 4:08 AM

As intriguing as this possibility is, I agree with the above sentiment that more evidence is required. However, I also feel that checking to see where the IP's are registered could be an interesting way to uncover such evidence as needed.

Posted by: Murff at October 9, 2009 4:10 AM

Clearly The One got The Nobel to make up for The Epic Failure in Copenhagen.

WaPo story here. Wash Post front-page online tagline: "Announcement sparks questions from reporters in Oslo about whether the Nobel committee was acting prematurely."

ROTFLMAO!!!

Posted by: pomalom at October 9, 2009 4:10 AM

Barry hasn't been able to accomplish ANYTHING so they reduce the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE to a token liberal award for the moron. I didn't think they could have cheapened it any more giving it to Carter but they have outdone themselves. What once was a prestigious award is now less than a $1 lottery ticket.

Posted by: TED at October 9, 2009 4:15 AM

Where are all the other trolls to protest their innocence? Lao would have been the last person I suspected of being a paid troll, and Hey you guys is another one that didn't seem to be working from a script. This is very curious. Very curious, indeed.

That Nobel is like the trophies given out at Special Olympics. And, it's obvious. I'd be too embarrassed to accept such a thing. It looks like an Affirmative Action cookie.

Of course the narcissist megalomaniac in chief wouldn't see it that way.

Posted by: Karin at October 9, 2009 5:02 AM

It's pretty sad... what did Obama accomplish for Peace? Bush's work for AIDS in Africa is a massive improvement over Bammie's "community work" and Obama's tenure is a lot more divisive and violent so far. Typical liberals rubbing one another's bellies.

Difference Between Liberals and Conservatives

If a Conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one. If a Liberal doesn't like guns, they believe no one should have one.

If a Conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat. If a Liberal is, they want to ban all meat products for everyone.

If a Conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy. A Liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a Conservative is homosexual, he quietly enjoys life. If a Liberal is homosexual, they loudly demand legislated respect.

If a Conservative is a minority , he sees himself as independently successful. Their Liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.

If a Conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A Liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a Conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A Liberal wants all churches to be silenced.

If a Conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A Liberal demands that his neighbors pay for his.

If a Conservative disagrees with a Liberal president, he is called a racist. When a Liberal disagrees with a Conservative president, it's patriotic dissent.

If a Conservative expresses his political view, he is called an idiot. A Liberal expressing his political views is expressing his right to Freedom of Speech.

“I never use the words Democrats and Republicans. It’s Liberals and Americans.

The Nobel committee probably felt they had to act quickly in giving Obama the peace prize because as unmerited as it looks now, it would probably have looked even more ridiculous by this time next year.

Posted by: Judith M. at October 9, 2009 5:45 AM

TED, this would be really funny if that wasn't so accurate. Wow.

Posted by: Jay B at October 9, 2009 6:01 AM

Giving Obama the Nobel Peace Prize is beyond absurd. But after assclowns like Jimmy Carter and Al Gore won it, it became totally meaningless.

Obama got the award for making speeches, thats all he has done. I wonder if this was done by the socialsts who awarded him the prize to deter him from sending more troops to Afghanistan. After all it would be absurd for to win the peace prize then send more troops in to kill "people".

Had Obama done something like broker a peace treaty between Israel and the Muslim nations in the region including the Palestinians and gotten Iran to give up its nuclear material and stop making more, then you could say he deserved it (sort of, since the odds of any such treaty lasting would be remote i.e Neville Chamberlain).

Posted by: Bad Robot at October 9, 2009 6:03 AM

oh, if jimmy carter deserved the NOBEL, then jimmy II certainly does! ::smirk::

Posted by: nancz at October 9, 2009 6:05 AM

Today is the day the nobel prize turned out to be worth as much as a gum wrapper. Could they name one major accomplishment that Bush didn't do better? Ah, he apologized. He groveled. He bowed. If that's worth the nobel peace prize, I'd rather wipe myself with it.

Posted by: Jay B at October 9, 2009 7:48 AM

Hilarious conceit on the part of this little blog... you actually think this tiny nest of batshit crazy rates enough merit to get a government blogger? Powerful hubris...

The (few hundred?) people who are aware of this thing are rather beneath the notice of any theoretical propaganda arm of the justice department (not to mention the fact that I find this story powerfully unlikely to begin with... is this more of the "bill-ayers-wrote-obama's-book" sorta crap, just made up on the spot by crazy people for other crazy people?)

Oh wait... no! it's ME! I'm one of THEM!
