Idiocy: LA Cops Give Gangbangers Plenty of Warning Before Raids

Posted by Gregory of Yardale at October 26, 2009 9:29 AM

The LAPD ran an operation recently involving SWAT Teams, uniformed officers, undercover cops, and Federal agencies aiming to round up 74 dangerous gang leaders and members. They caught 47 of them. Jack Dunphy reports on the probable reason the other 27 got away (edited for brevity).

It came as something of a surprise to officers assigned to the operation Thursday morning that the command post had been set up in a parking lot at the corner of two of the busiest thoroughfares in South Los Angeles, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Figueroa Street. Worse, this intersection marks the northeast boundary of the area claimed by the Rollin' 40 Crips gang the operation was targeting. Assembled there was an array of command post vehicles from the LAPD and the FBI, hundreds of marked and unmarked police cars as well as SWAT trucks and armored cars. Any fool could have driven by and known that something big was about to go down in the neighborhood.
It got worse. At around three in the morning, operation supervisors gathered for a briefing from one of the captains in charge. Using a P.A. system that could be heard for blocks -- most assuredly in the apartment complex that overlooks the parking lot, an apartment complex where members of the Rollin’ 40 Crips happen to reside -- the captain gave an outline of the operation, even naming the targeted gang and the exact time officers would be serving the warrants. ... Given the warning that had been broadcast to the neighborhood, it’s surprising that even one of them was found at home.

Two of the captains in charge of the operation are on the short list for promotion to police chief by narcissistic, philandering , reconquista-supporting Mayor Antonio Vallaraigosa. Fortunately for them, the selection of police chief will owe more to politics than competence.
