Green Apples and Environmental Hypocrisy

Posted by Gregory of Yardale at October 7, 2009 5:24 AM

Apple Computer, on whose board sits carbon credit scam artist Al Gore, has pulled out of the US Chamber of Commerce, claiming the chamber isn't totally cereal about fighting ManBearPig. (Washington Post)

In a letter to the Chamber's president, Apple Vice President Catherine Novelli wrote, "Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort." As a result, Novelli said, "we have decided to resign our membership effective immediately."

Michelle Malkin notes, however, that although Apple is headquartered in California, it evades that state's Draconian environmental laws by manufacturing its computers, iPhones, iPods, and other electronic gadgets in China; whose environmental record is worse than Lindsey Lohan's driving record. Steve Malloy's Green Hell Blog has pictures showing the dramatic difference in air quality at Apple's Cupertino headquarters versus that of Shenzhen China where its manufacturing facilities are located.

You have to remember that with hippies, it's not about cleaning up *the* environment, it's about cleaning up *their* environment.

ManBearPig must be stopped! (Except in China, India, and Brazil.)

Such blatant hypocrisy at Apple - but man do they make awesome products. How does Rush feel about this, I wonder? Me, I'm not ditching my iPod or iMac but wondering about that Apple logo I stuck to my pickup (next to the "1-20-13 Hope for Change" sticker)

This is but one reason I never have, and never will, purchase an Apple product. Me? Dell computers and Archos MP3 player...

As an IT Administrator, I can tell you this. We love our Macs. However, my entire department is right-wing nut jobs and we can't stand Apple's social activism. It really causes us a lot of conflict around here. If we could put Mac OS on Dells (other than the few we've hacked into doing it) we would. Then again, that Apple hardware is damn sexy.

I'm with you Fuzzlenutter. No IPod for me, and no Apple products either. Palm Pre for life!

You'll pry my Mac from my cold, dead hands... but it's definitely a case of love the art, hate the artist. Interestingly, my anecdotal observation has been that Mac users seem more likely to be conservatives than liberals, the company's image notwithstanding.

You silly conservative racist.

It's your intentions that count. [pay no attention to the pollution behind the curtain]

FYI, Al Gore is on Apple's Board of Directors.

That is reason enough to avoid Apple.

Using that logic, Barack Obama as president would be reason for us to leave America. However, the product is not a problem, just the leadership.

Posted by: Paul H at October 7, 2009 7:45 AM

The Chambers response should be "OK, let me get the door."

Apple assumes that because people pay an excessive amount for their products, they shouldn't have a problem paying excessive amounts for everything else.

I think Apple's reason for manufacturing in China has more to do with labor costs than environmental regulations, though California's harsh regulations certainly do make manufacturing more expensive there. Nonetheless, I and many other Apple users would be thrilled if they would just stick to making great products and leave the social posturing to the Democrats, thanks.

Also worth mentioning is that ManBearPig himself is on the board at Apple, which probably has something to do with it.

I just told my kid about this and he went sideways trying to justify Apples actions.

...and he is a AGW opponent. It is true that they make great toys.

Oh, the innocent child, how I wish he would learn faster and I could learn to teach better.

No no no Paul H. You sorely misinterpreted that.

Al Gore being on the Board of Directs at Apple is reason enough to denounce any and all things they do (as well as their products). Your analogy went to an extreme that is absolutely irrelevant.

Barack Obama being is president is reason enough for me to distrust any and all things CONgress does.

See the difference?

Granted, I didn't need Obama in the position for me to distrust CONgress because they do a fine job of doing that themselves but Obama, for me, adds MORE reason but is not a defining factor.

Meh, this is more like sensationalistic fluff. Apple is going to do whatever makes money, bottom line. We do not know what behind the scenes antics are at work, but this could simply be a PR stunt. Al Gore being on the Apple BoD has nothing more to do with Apple products than someone eating an apple does with planting the tree itself.

The photo comparison between Shenzhen and Cupertino is also misleading as if to imply that Apple is the culprit behind China's air pollution. Again, fluff.

Apple will likely put a moist finger in the wind and make corporate decisions accordingly, which is nothing unique.

Typical of enviromental hypotcrits like AL GORE to travel all over the world in his gulfstream jet giving speeches denounching america and making a croooked buck over it

I think Apple's reason for manufacturing in China has more to do with labor costs than environmental regulations, though California's harsh regulations certainly do make manufacturing more expensive there.

I have a Mac Plus from the very late 1980s or very early 1990s and it is, believe it or not stamped "made in USA."

I realize we're talking almost 20 years ago, but it was my understanding that California's been infected with moonbattery for decades. So outsourcing to China should fall on Apple's shoulders as well as those of hostile statists. Otherwise, why didn't they move to so-called business-friendly states like Texas and Kentucky?
