Fat Cat Michael Moore's Anti-Capitalism Movie Flops
Posted by Van Helsing at October 5, 2009 9:02 AM
No wonder Michael Moore hates capitalism so much. After allowing him to wallow in extravagant wealth for years, it has turned right around and denied him another box office bonanza, as his latest left-wing schlockumentary bombs:
Michael Moore's purposefully controversial and politically polarizing documentary Capitalism: A Love Story was distributed by Overture Films and wound up in 7th place. It went wide into 962 theaters this weekend after opening on September 23rd in a limited release of 4 theaters. The pic about the financial crisis made $1.6M Friday and $2M Saturday (+33%) for a $5M weekend and $5.4M cume. Just for comparison purposes: Moore's most recent Sicko did $4.4 mil its opening weekend from only 441 theaters (and that was with him guesting on The Tonight Show and announcing he'd been subpoenaed by the Bush administration for the health care documentary). And his Fahrenheit 9/11 did $23.9M its opening weekend from 868 venues.) So, as much as the left loves Moore, and the right detests him, and he always uses the ensuing controversy to self-promote, the money angle is only what interests me. The fact is that Capitalism: A Love Story looks like its domestic total will fail to crack $20M and end up his worst performing film since his Oscar-winner Bowling For Columbine in 2002.
The liberal establishment media is already failing in its efforts to prop up Comrade Obama; it certainly won't be able to support the much weightier Moore — not that it hasn't tried.
If you own stock in the sort of moonbattery that Moore made his fortune bringing to market, now would be a good time to sell.

"Capitalism set a 2009 record for per-theater ticket sales last weekend. It went wide on Friday, and both the Hollywood Reporter and The Wrap indicate it did $1.5 million (not $1.3 million) for the night...
Sicko, released in 2007, is the fourth biggest grossing documentary of all time. In its first weekend of wide release it did $4.5 million."

Michael Moore is one half of a dung beetle on America's cheeseburger--with one bite taken out of it(and swallowed!)
Posted by: Graycat at October 5, 2009 10:17 AM
The performance of opening night / weekend in four theaters does not alter the facts about his latest mockumentary. The fact is that Capitalism: A Love Story looks like its domestic total will fail to crack $20M and end up his worst performing film since his Oscar-winner Bowling For Columbine in 2002.
Nor does anyone here care about how many people lapped up the rest of his previously released pablum.
The gaseous windbag's attempt to foist a bunch of BS about how bad capitalism is, while simultaneously living in the lap of luxury on the money morons have paid to see his tripe, falls flat.
But, you go right ahead and pay for a ticket to see a movie that bashes the very system that allowed itself to be created.
Posted by: Richard C. at October 5, 2009 10:32 AM
Even if it only grosses $10 million, after meager expenses (Moore is cheapskate) he will make enough to keep stuffing himself with junk good until he keels over from a coronary.
Posted by: Anonymous at October 5, 2009 10:40 AM
Uh, ptet, if you read the fine print it was per theatre ticket record for a "limited release film." "Zombie" sold way more tickets per theatre than Moore's film and it was not a limited release film (i.e. it made A LOT more money).
Posted by: Judith M. at October 5, 2009 10:42 AM
Imagine the giant grease fire that will erupt when he arrives in hell.
Posted by: Anonymous at October 5, 2009 10:45 AM
Must be because he failed to use union workers.
Posted by: J at October 5, 2009 10:47 AM
And here I thought documentaries were supposed to be objective. Silly me.
Posted by: Seamus at October 5, 2009 10:51 AM
If Fatboy Moore would just call his movies comedies or entertainment instead of passing them off as legitimate documentaries, I might even enjoy them. His one hit, "Roger & Me" I found enjoyable only because he went after the CEO of the arrogant General Motors. But that movie was his Corvair, his only legitimately entertaining albeit, slanted movie. Everything else has been a total crock and he is as dishonest as his corpulent.
Posted by: Son of Taz at October 5, 2009 10:51 AM
Come on guys. Moore can proclaim complete success since his crappy movie hasn't made one single Capitalistic dime at the box office.
Posted by: Davey at October 5, 2009 11:11 AM
I hope this stupid annoying liberal moonbat never agisn produces another hit movie ever again his films are junk not worth wasting our money on and screw the oscars

He looks like an angry toad.

Posted by: MM at October 5, 2009 11:31 AM
Trying to parse out how much per theater the movie made is worthless, it was in limited release so of course it made more per theater. Now that it's wide that number will plummet. Also, even diehard fans seem to get the irony here of this fat capitalist running dog making a fortune bashing capitalism. I agree with Son of Taz: just say these are satires, comedies, and I might even enjoy them, too.
To me Moore's films are more akin to Spinal Tap (though not nearly as brilliant) than to anything close to a documentary. His films are simple-minded polemicals, obvious propaganda films for the gullible left. As propaganda they convince no one who doesn't already agree and so fall short of being earth-shaking. Moore is set for life money-wise, but his great days as a leftwing icon have certainly peaked. Yes, people will continue to fawn, but rarely will the fawners be new converts. His films are simply not believeable on any factual basis.
Posted by: ekw at October 5, 2009 11:38 AM
Of course, ekw, you wouldn't know that MM uses factcheckers, every time, just to preclude the sort of pettifogging, twaddling, criticism that you and half the US media make of his documentaries. Fox and similar MSM promoters of confusion and right-wing propaganda have had to eat most of their words already, on "Sicko", "Fahrenheit" and others. Of course, this wouldn't bother/interest YOU or most of the others in this forum, or even cause you to pause in your tracks - WHY? BECAUSE YOU LOVE YOUR MONEY! More than any god...

Even with 'Roger and Me,' although it is true that it was certainly wrong of Roger Smith to screw over his employees in Flint the way he did, the fact of the matter is, in that film as well as in his other movies, Moore uses a multitude of extremely dishonest and unethical tactics, and there are numerous half- truths and flat- out lies in it. If you want, I could list them.
impofloki, that goes for you too. The way Moore works is that he is generally able to avoid flat- out saying untrue things in his films (Though he has still slipped up and done so on countless occasions, which I could list for you, as well), his style is generally more along the lines of perverting and misrepresenting the facts in such a way as to deliberately cause the audience to draw false conclusions from them (i.e. the way he implied in 'Bowling for Columbine' that the NRA was an arm of the Ku Klux Klan, when in fact anyone with even just a basic knowledge of the respective histories of those groups would know that such an assertion is a total crock).
Moore is a liar, a thief, a hypocrite, and a generally bad man who has hurt, slandered, and betrayed many good people simply to elevate himself.

HAAAA! Love it!

MM will be fine. Either his movies will be a success make him money, or he'll get money The Other Way via a bailout.
Posted by: Nunya at October 5, 2009 1:10 PM
Moore always grosses a lot, even when his films don't.

Yep. Propaganda, agitprop, gullible, cognitively disenfranchised, what's in a word?

Separated at birth: Michael Moore and Jabba the Hutt.
Posted by: Graycat at October 5, 2009 3:19 PM
I would like to thank Comrade Moore for his great prop.. uh uh .. and very informative documentory, Capitolism. I would also like to tell you all to fear not that he'll lose money on this project because the NEA has plenty of your money to help keep him from being a victim of the Right Wing smear machine.

I find it amazing/repulsive how these folks can take with an outstreched hand and stab with the other.
How shallow are they that they dont see this?
How shallow are we that WE dont see this?

$1.3 million won't even buy a week's supply of bacon for Lumpy.
Posted by: V the K at October 5, 2009 4:07 PM
Michael and Barry are getting the same message from America. You are irrelevant, boring, and We the People are sick of your shitty versions of art and politics. Move to Cuba and gay out with each other.

the question now is, "is michael moore-on too big to fail?".
Posted by: nancz at October 5, 2009 8:43 PM
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Now he can write a book on the Michael Moore Diet -
"How to loose millions on stupidy, and cry away the pounds!"
or
"How I tried to convince everyone that I knew more about business, and lost my ass!"

Saw a cariture of Mikie Moore in a NRA magazine showing him as a nasty looking toad PERFECT RESERBLENCE
Posted by: Flu-Bird at October 5, 2009 9:18 PM
In a sane world, Moore's movies might make $18 on opening weekend.
The fact that they do even as well as they do, says more about the American people than it does about him.
I think what bothers me the most about the guy is that he apparently does not even tell "the story" right. Numerous independent reviews of his movies expose his exaggerations, omissions of pertient facts, out-of-context quotes & data, and outright falsehoods about the opposition.
If you're really right about the issues, it shouldn't be necessary to lie to the audience. He would do like a conservative commenter does - report the facts, make the case based on those, and leave it at that.

Did anyone see "An American Carol?" It didn't do terribly well at the box office, but it was an absolute riot. It never uses the name "Michael Moore," but you can tell pretty quickly it's supposed to be him. The film also pokes fun at "Move-ALONG dot org."
Posted by: Cylar at October 5, 2009 11:04 PM
Hey, he really does look a lot like Peter Griffin, doesn't he?
Posted by: One Little Victory at October 6, 2009 3:22 AM
It may have not gotten the most attention because he didn't get to register the more attention grabbing controversial themed domain name capitalismisevil.com to promote his movie through.
Posted by: John Gilbert at October 6, 2009 3:45 AM
It is way past the time that conservatives just ignore the bloated scam artist. His so-called documentary fils are all a joke, and anyone spending time or money on them other than for a laugh are idiots.
Posted by: Bruce Pierce at October 6, 2009 3:51 AM
Cylar, yes, 'American Carol' was a good movie. I can still remember when I saw it, the audience I was with applauded at the end of it.
I think it would have done better in the box office if it had been released in 2004, when Moore's popularity was at its peak.
Posted by: Adam at October 6, 2009 4:37 AM
You folks don't do a lot of thinking, do you.

Thanks for dropping by to ask. Now piss off.
Posted by: Cylar at October 7, 2009 2:12 AM
Bowling for Columbine and Sicko are both very interesting, thought-provoking films.
In those films, it's obvious to anyone with an IQ in triple-digits that Moore really cares about America, but he thinks it could be even better if we just thought about it for 5 minutes.
If you can't see what he was trying to say in those movies, you're just an idiot.
Posted by: Anonymous at October 8, 2009 8:11 AM
What I find so odd about Michael Moore (besides his resemblance to a beached wale) is that the guy himself is a capitalist, with a net worth exceeding $50 million. Moore proudly declared "I don't own a single share of stock!", when in fact he owned tens of thousands of shares in U.S. stocks. Most notably, Moore owned more than 2,000 shares in Halliburton -- the gas and oil company he denounced in his film Fahrenheit 9/11!
It's kind of like Al Gore making a movie about the human carbon contribution to global warming, when he himself leaves a carbon footprint the size of a yeti.
Michael Moore needs to put his money where his mouth is, or close his trap.
