Church and State Team Up to Censor Fox News and Talk Radio

Posted by Gregory of Yardale at October 20, 2009 10:52 AM

Several left-of-center churches are petitioning the FCC to investigate "Hate Speech" on talk radio.

We know that to the left, even the suggestion that African-American quarterback doesn't live up to his hype can be labeled Hate Speech. We know that to the left, a radio host can be indicted for hate speech even for completely fabricated "quotes." In this case, "Hate Speech is defined as supporting the enforcement of American Immigration Law."

Members of the UCC's email distribution list received the following message from the executive director of the UCC's Office of Communication, Inc., the Rev. J. Bennett Guess.

Does violence in the media, particularly hate speech against immigrants, impact levels of actual violence?
That's the question we will be asking during the 2009 Media Violence Fast, October 19-26. We invite your participation at www.mediaviolencefast.org.
As a participant, you will be asked to sign a petition to the Federal Communications Commission asking that it open a notice of inquiry into hate speech in the media. We will also urge the National Telecommunications and Information Agency to update its 1993 report, The Role of Telecommunications in Hate Crimes.
Together, we can express our concern about the frequency and tone of anti-immigrant remarks made by several TV and radio commentators, such as Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage and Lou Dobbs.

The article goes on to detail a very cozy relationship between left-wing church leaders and FCC commissioners.

The article notes that several religious denominations have signed on to the request to the FCC. They are: the United Church of Christ, U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, the Islamic Society of North America, United Methodist Communications, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and "several other faith groups."

Funny how the left doesn't mind the commingling of church and state when it suits the Obamunist agenda.

Since the Obamatrons HATE FOX News, isnt that a HATE CRIME???

Posted by: Mousey Tongue at October 20, 2009 11:07 AM

FOX News is under assault the same way Globovision is in Venezuela. Chavez keeps that network up, but sends his thugs after them, even tossing tear gas grenades into the building to shake things up. ObaMAO wont shut Fox News down, he will just send his thugs around to "send a message" if they irritate him enough. It will likely start with Rahm Emmanuel sending dead fish to Beck, O'Reilly and Hannity.

Posted by: Mousey Tongue at October 20, 2009 11:21 AM

The free media seems to have forgotten about the Chavez-praising Marxist apparatchik Mark Lloyd, otherwise known as the "Diversity Czar."

What happened to the investigation of this guy? Lloyd is completely unhinged and needs to be forced out Van Jones style.

Posted by: IOpian at October 20, 2009 11:27 AM

The Left keeps on referring to illegal aliens as immigrants and I can't help but believe this is a very conscious decision to lie and deceive so as to use this issue as a political tool. I don't know what these leftwing religious people think they're going to accomplish. If this goes on and the Left wipes the playing field of political opposition from the Right that which will remain will be the differing factions of the Left and they will then go at each other's throats in an attempt to destroy political rivals within the Left and to wrest political power; and the first to get destroyed in that fight will be the religious Left. Fools.

The UCC just another bunch of satan worshipping dorkoheads

Posted by: SPURWING PLOVER at October 20, 2009 11:52 AM

Before I get too upset, I'm just going to remind myself that nobody'd be bothering with Fox News if things were working out for Obama or if he'd accomplished something in the last nine months.

Posted by: mega at October 20, 2009 12:02 PM

This is one more example of groups being used by Obama to complete his agenda. We know he will try to shut down talk radio and this is one of many salvos that will be hurled by this administration. Keep looking because the attack has just begun. It will be interesting to see the tatics that will be used to demonize and shut down talk radio. This could never happen if the MSM did their job. As expected this will escape
the attention of the media except Fox.

Posted by: StJames at October 20, 2009 12:11 PM

I saw nothing about this on the USCCB website, I wonder if the promoters of this petition are blowing smoke. Not that it would be the first time the Bishops were duped into supporting something they thought sounded good but was actually a vehicle for promoting evil, of course, but I'd like to see something from them showing that they support it before I believe such a claim.

Posted by: Judith M. at October 20, 2009 12:20 PM

I'm the Vice Chairman of a UCC church (former Congregational, with the right of secession from the UCC and local ownership of church property).

This attack against free speech is reprehensible and in implicates itself, given that some of the accused have been falsely accused by the UCC. Making such knowingly unfounded false claims is harmful and incendiary speech itself.

More fundamentally, it illustrates extreme disregard for the history, tradition, culture and ethic of speech rights. The UCC would readily re-engage the King of England's Star Chamber in an effort to silence those with non-Marxist agendas.

It appears the UCC may need to prepare for a much smaller church.

Posted by: Lincoln D. Faks at October 20, 2009 12:53 PM

Gee, Rev. Guess (as in "I reckon"?), you missed one, the one you Stalinists never mention, if you can help it, since he'd eviscerate you in an open and fair debate or discussion on any subject with the greatest of ease (ah, there's a hint!).

Why not mention him? Could it be that he scares the living hell out of you and your ilk? Yeah, that's the real reason, first and foremost.

Cowards like you, and Anita Dunn, Rahmbo and Dave, the Prez hissef, all wish he'd just "go away," since you have not the slightest chance to best him in a competition of any kind. Sell a million + copies of a hardcover, non-fiction book on liberty, American history, the Constitution and the philosophical groundings of this nation (also describing brilliantly the statist foe of all of the above), and you get totally ignored by the state-run media; sell a couple of thousand copies of a ridiculous screed on how Conservatism is "dead," and you're lauded and puff-pieced ad infinitum. Such is Obama's Amerika.

Hey, Rev.! I suggest you actually read "Liberty and Tyranny," by Mark R. Levin, Esq., and then tell us all exactly what you found therein that constitutes "hate speech," you dolt. Better yet, catch his radio program once in a while and try and do the same thing (be honest, now - as if you could possibly be honest and nothing more than what you really are: a bought-and-paid-for liberal hack).

Posted by: jc14 at October 20, 2009 12:59 PM

So Hatless, why are you sticking with the United Communist Church if they are that bad?

Posted by: Judith M. at October 20, 2009 1:06 PM

jc14: I don't get your post. Who is this Rev?

Posted by: Jim at October 20, 2009 1:11 PM

Since we don't know what or who Obama is, it is ok to go after Fox.
What a joke, take notice that the so-called churches on the list are not really churches at all but clubs where people can go to "feel good" about themselves. Most, if not all, on the list wouldn't know Christ if He was standing right in front of them. They don't teach the "truth", only what is a feeble attempt at filling the pews.

Posted by: Oscar Pearson at October 20, 2009 1:22 PM

Uberleftwing churches are doing their dayamedest to not have to live up to their obligations according to the bible - which is to tend to the needy, specifically widows and orphans. Many of these so-called "christian" denoms would rather the government takeover their duties so they can go about the world sowing discord amidst the brethren! A POX UPON THEIR HOUSES!

Posted by: nancz at October 20, 2009 1:28 PM

Aha! So, now that Fox was pointed out to be what they are, you guys can't take it. Hannity is an opinion show, Beck is an opinion show, Fox and Fiends is an opinion show, O'Reilly is an opinon show, Red Eye is pathetic and only last call drunks see it, Huckabee is an opinion show. Geraldo is worthless to both the right and left.Brent Baier surrounds himself with panels of neo-cons. So, what does that leave? Chris Wallace? Bent on being the perfect little conservative minion. The daytime newscasters are taking their cues from the opinion shows. So, that leaves Shep Smith and Greta. Shep will get off the Fox script and actually report 60% of the time, it is clear his days are numbered at Fox. Greta, actually follows journalistic standards.

All of that, and you still call them "Fox News"? Fail! Compare this with other news networks. David Schuster and Tamron Hall...journalists. Rachel Maddow...journalist. Contessa Brewer...journalist. Rick Sanchez...journalist. Anderson Cooper...wishy washsy journalist. Facce you got punk'd by Roger Ailes! Years ago.

Posted by: TED at October 20, 2009 1:56 PM

"Red Eye is pathetic and only last call drunks see it"

Then why does it get more viewers than some other news channels get at 8pm?

One thing the left doesn't ever consider, unintended consequences. Sure, they're more than happy to let the gov't take control of the media, and squash any free speech rights against people that don't blindly follow their agenda... but what they never think about is that same power they're willing to give up to "their guy", is going to still be in effect when an administration they don't agree with is eventually in office.

I know, I know, Obama is a lightworker who will magically stay in office forever, so it doesn't matter to the left. (rolleyes)

Posted by: Seamus at October 20, 2009 1:58 PM

The left is so accustomed to controlling the media they just can't stand it when someone strays off the reservation.. and does it with such devastating effectiveness. Remember, Fox News has ratings way and above those of CNN. It's no wonder the left is upset.

Posted by: TED at October 20, 2009 2:10 PM

Seamus what a weak argument. You are also citing the wiki page for your ratings info. You may want to subscribe to some actual ratings services.
That the White House called Fox out on what it is, and other groups are joining does not institute "Gov't control".

Since 2003 Fox has been hit for it's cheerleading practices and other nonsense. Barack Obama was only thinking of a Senate run at the time.

"but what they never think about is that same power they're willing to give up to "their guy", is going to still be in effect when an administration they don't agree with is eventually in office." Remember when you guys were worried Hillary would have the same powers Bush started? Well, the left is pretty angry some of those things too. Elections have consequences my friend, and that the opinion commentators of other channels see Obama as a upgrade from Bush is not surprising. You also fail to mention how Moonbattery and Fox make claims against the mainstream media while boasting the best ratings...would that not make Fox the mainstream?

Is it not the job of religion to be the "morality police", making sure that nobody says or does anything offensive?

You people get too hung up on the whole 'my-team-versus-your-team' thing, and need to take a step back. This is not Dem vs. GOP, it is religious people deciding what is and isnt moral/good for us. Further, remember that religious groups are constantly trying to create bad press for their "opponents" (you know, people like scientists, doctors, and, yes, entertainers). Calling this a "far-left church" is foolish - the real left wing has no church presence at all, as I think most of you well know.

Is it an attack on free speech? You bet it is. But I'm telling you that the motivation is not some stupid government-is-coming-to-get-you conspiracy theory, rather simply the most recent manifestation of that same ancient reason that I can't buy a beer before noon on Sunday, kickoff be damned.

Posted by: You're looking the wrong way! at October 20, 2009 2:30 PM

Posted by: TED at October 20, 2009 2:37 PM

Oh, please, wrong way. This assault on free speech is definitely coming from the left wing, and there are plenty of left leaning churches out there, the UCC being a fine example of one.

Posted by: Judith M. at October 20, 2009 2:48 PM

Somehow the point seems to be getting lost here.

Namely, that censorship is unconstitutional, period.
And currently, there is no republican representative structure at any level in government able to resist the fascist repression of free-speech chronically perpetuated, and now highly organized, by the left.

Prediction: the left has and will continue to attribute lies about "hate speech" to talk radio and FOX with minimal public resistance as republicans cluelessly quit the fight and join the democrats to do more stupid things like provide federal funding for left-wing, propagandizing, otherwise-bankrupt newspapers.

A harbinger of worse to come was the recent passage of the clearly unconstitutional (and patently ridiculous) federal Matthew Brady "hate crimes" bill.
Hello Stalin.

Posted by: Fiberal at October 20, 2009 2:53 PM

The difference is, religious people can only try and persuade you to adopt their moral belief system. What liberals do is far more insidious. They take over government, and then get government to coerce you into adopting heir values.

Transfats are outlawed in NYC and other jurisdictions. Is this because of religious people? No, it's leftists. The amount of water your toilet uses to flush is limited to an ineffective 1.6 gallons. Is this because of religious people? No, it's leftists. Is it the religious right that wants to regulate what kind of car you drive, and punish you with taxes for driving too much? Nope, that's the left. Is it the religious right pushing veganism in the public schools? Nope, that's the left again. Is it the religious right who wants to raise everybody's energy costs by thousands of dollars in service to ideology? No, it's the left.

And we have a complete frakking leftist retard whining because he has to plan ahead if he wants to have beer on Sunday. What a complete freakin' crash-helmet-wearing whining retard bitch.

Posted by: Judith M. at October 20, 2009 3:15 PM

Didnt fox news win a court case and stated they had the right to lie and or distort the truth as they saw fit?

http://ceasespin.org/ceasespin_blog/ceasespin_blogger_files/fox_news_gets_okay_to_misinform_public.html

And why would anyone listen to the likes of Hannity,Levin, Mark Thompson, or any other radio talk show host to get any kind of news? most of the garbage these people say is crap.

One more thing. If you want to blame the left or the right for anything, you might want to post your source. No source, usually BS.

Posted by: Mousey Tongue at October 20, 2009 11:21 AM

Are there gas grenades being lobbed at FOX? No? Then it's not the same, is it? Try not to contradict yourself in consecutive sentences.

Also, this isn't a co-mingling of Church and State. This is churches petitioning the government, which any legal entity is free to do.

But, yes, this isn't the way to challenge hate speech. (I can't say if FOX engages in hate speech, I don't watch it.) The right way is to confront hate speech out in the open, in the marketplace of ideas.

What a laugh! Freedom of speech is not protected when you yell fire in a crowded theatre. It also is not protected at the workplace, unless of course Roger Ailes is your boss. So, petitioning the Government to curb "hate speech" is well within bounds under FCC regulations. Covering a Tea Party, and actively promoting Tea Parties is two different things. Fox is not news...get over it! Rush Limbaugh is a racist...face it!

Posted by: Ghost of Wellstone at October 20, 2009 4:13 PM

Posted by: V the K at October 20, 2009 4:23 PM

There goes that whine again. Claiming the old "fire in a theater" stance, no one is talking about that, the discussion was about churches clinging to one set of political beliefs and trying to get the government to enforce what they see as "the right way".
"David Schuster and Tamron Hall...journalists. Rachel Maddow...journalist. Contessa Brewer...journalist. Rick Sanchez...journalist. Anderson Cooper...wishy washsy journalist. Facce you got punk'd by Roger Ailes! Years ago.

Rush Derangement Syndrome is merely the progression of an advanced case of BDS.

Liberalism is a mental disorder which starts with progressive hopey-changism, then proceeds on to the more advanced stages of moonbattery, such as BDS and RDS. Along the way, sufferers become extremely paranoid and irritable, finally culminating in appointment as an unconfirmed member of the President's advisory staff.

Just because you're too stupid to read them doesn't make them incomprehensible.

Obama's claiming he can add 30,000,000 new patients and 0 new doctors and hospitals to the health care system while claiming there will be no rationing, no reduction in quality of care, and it will cost *less* money... *that's* incomprehensible.

The NFL decides who becomes an owner not the other way around.

All this blowhard (Rush Hudson Limbaugh A.KA. Jeff Christie) has to offer is his money and his opinions, (which in my opinion are on the fringes of racism, one mans opinion). There are many more groups biding for the Rams, not just his group. Lets face it there are more men with money (Marshall Faulk) that will gladly fill the slot and the Rams will win or lose depending on how well they work as a team and not on whether or not Rush is an owner.

As for Vick, well he is a player (he has talent not like you, Rush or I, unless you are a NFL player?) and he served his time and the NFL decided we live in the land of second chances, so why not (I personally don’t like it but, oh well). Life has never been fair (NEWS FLASH!)

Now as to the “Free Speech” argument, I guess many of you like myself heard Rush on Thursday “Almost in tears”, priceless. But the last couple of days he now is in his normal ranting and will continue until someone surpasses him, “Free Speech” continues, so what is being stifled, it simply is not true, of course, you may not have a radio, so you might want to get one.
