A Tale of Three Cities

Posted by Van Helsing at October 1, 2009 2:50 PM

In 1945, Hiroshima was flattened by an atomic bomb. Afterwards, it looked like this:

hiroshima-then.jpg

Now it looks like this:

hiroshima-now.jpg

Nagasaki got nuked too:

nagasaki-then.jpg

Here's Nagasaki now:

nagasaki-now.jpg

Detroit was less lucky. Rather than nuclear weapons, it was hit by liberalism, from which cities don't spring back:

We might have been better off fighting it out with the Soviet Union than letting its ideology destroy us from within.

Compliments of Henry.

Excellent analogy and idea. Beck needs to read this.

(Yawn), more false equivalency. Apples do not equal oranges.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 1, 2009 3:01 PM

So, forty years of unchecked liberalism is more devastating than nuclear bombs... like we didn't already know that.

My dad was with the army of occupation in post-war Japan. His scrapbook is filled with pictures showing how Japan's major cities were being rebuilt even BEFORE America arrived. The diffrence ANONYMOUS, is that Japan had people who were willing to rebuild and create anew, unlike the people of Detroit, who had either given up, moved out, or had gotten fat off the corruption.

Posted by: KHarn at October 1, 2009 3:10 PM

So which one is Chez Klebba?

Apples do not equal oranges.

But fruits are fruits.

Beck needs to show this on his program.

One of the triumphs of British socialism was building tower block apartment buildings and the NHS. It's what Clement Attlee's postwar government chose to do with Marshall Plan funds, which Britain received more of than any other country.

Germany received less money than the UK, but (still under Allied administration) invested it in rebuilding industry, instead of consuming it to build socialism.

Upshot: Germany laid the foundation for its Wirtschaftswunder, while the UK slid into a steep decline only arrested by Thatcher's election. Meanwhile, the NHS (in the 1980s the second largest employer in Europe, after the Red Army) is strapped for cash, and the UK is dynamiting the tower blocks, which have had all the problems of our housing projects.

Got to be a moral in their somewhere. Must think, must think...

Detroit has followed the progressive prescription for 40 years. High taxes - Check. Large, well-funded city bureaucracy - Check (The Detroit City government has more employees and departments than cities half its size.) Progressive social justice (i.e. "Get even with whitey) - Check. Hostility to Free Enterprise - You betcha.

How's it working out? Great -- if your last name is Conyers or Kilpatrick. Otherwise... not so much.

Posted by: V the K at October 1, 2009 3:34 PM

You know who else the progressive Goatse Wellstoned types just loved? Kwame Kilpatrick. Yeah, he was the young, clean, articulate, "hip-hop" mayor. And they loved him. So what if he had a half dozen illegitimate kids running around? That couldn't possibly reflect his ability to govern.

'Cept that it did. 'Cos conservatives realize something progressives don't... character really does matter.

Posted by: V the K at October 1, 2009 3:38 PM

wasn't there an idea proffered by the moonbat elite recently that advocated the bulldozing of a large swath of detroit? sounds like they want to "sweep" their failures "under the rug" so to speak.

Posted by: weewilly at October 1, 2009 3:42 PM

We should give Detroit the same chance Hiroshima and Nagasaki got, starting with the nuking. It isn't as though it would be a big loss.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at October 1, 2009 3:57 PM

Jay, a nuke dropped on Detroit wouldn't hit anything worth saving. And the suburbs would be grateful.

Posted by: V the K at October 1, 2009 3:59 PM

hey! there are bears in detroit...

Posted by: Artfldgr at October 1, 2009 4:11 PM

(yawn) More crap from anon. Do you ever write anything worth reading? Weeks ago you made some snide comment about a "serious discussion of the issues". Still waiting.

Posted by: man of fedw words at October 1, 2009 4:17 PM

OK, the smaller buildings (from the Detroit pics) I kind of understand, but how does a large, what appears to be, municipal building (first Detroit pic) reach a state of disrepair (aka ready for demolition) like that?

Detroit is fucked.

Hey, how about a caption contest for the first photo?

Here's my entry: "Looks like we fucked with the wrong people."

Detoilet is well on its way to returning to nature, if you look at the satellite photos. There are large portions of those wrecked houses that have already been flattened. The trees are growing. Wildlife is returning. It'll be like Zimbabwe in more ways than one soon, all we have to do is cut it off and let it happen. Pretty soon it'll be pristine wilderness, well except for the hazardous waste, and we can put a new city there.

We in Michigan are going to declare war on Ohio, then surrender. As part of the peace treaty, Ohio will have to take Detroit. Problem solved.
And where did you get those pics of the upscale neighborhoods of Detroit? I went to a Tiger's game last year, just to see Comerica Park. Never, ever again. If I could, I'd move to the U.P. and dynamite the Mackinac Bridge.

Posted by: UpNorth at October 1, 2009 5:29 PM

Don't declare war on Quebec, France, or any other French-speaking country, or you'll find yourself in the Surrender-Off version of Ali/Frazier.

I went to a Tiger's game last year, just to see Comerica Park. Never, ever again.

Was it really that bad?

Posted by: Jay Guevara at October 1, 2009 5:45 PM

The large building in frame 1 (just under modern Nagasaki) is the former Michigan Central Station, the main railroad station for Detroit. I don't know when it was built, but in the fifties it was beautiful So was downtown. There was supposed to be a hotel on top of the station, but it was never finished. I don't know why. There have been various plans put forward for refurbishing it and putting it to use, the last I heard was as a jail. Coleman Young flat out told the whites to get out when he was elected and they said "Sure, why not?" and took their tax dollars with them. The city has been run by Black Liberals ever since. The riots of '67 destroyed black businesses in black neighborhoods and they never recovered. I was born in Detroit and finally abandonded it four years ago. To watch what was once a beautiful, vibrant city slide ever further into filth and corruption was painful. I now live where my taxes are less that half what they were and the city is neat, clean and thriving. Ave atque vale, Detroit.

Posted by: Faffnir at October 1, 2009 5:54 PM

Detroit - aka New Mogadishu.

Don't laugh about bombing our own cities - I was a student in Philadelphia when (liberal Democrat)Mayor Wilson Goode's police department dropped the bomb on the "MOVE" bunker near the University of PA campus in West Philadelphia. They dropped a "satchel bomb" from the police helicopter and burned down an entire city block......

The city rebuilt it, too - poorly. Very poorly, IAW Democratic tradition.

Posted by: TonyD95B at October 1, 2009 6:00 PM

I used to work with a guy who was born in Japan just outside of Hiroshima. He was there when the bomb went out and he told me that in order to rebuild the Japanese had to make a lot of very difficult choices, and that people basically had a choice of either working their butts off or starving to death. That might be a good strategy for Detroit...

Posted by: Judith M. at October 1, 2009 6:04 PM

Here's how the comparison breaks down:

Hiroshima and Nagasaki rebuilt, the Japanese abandoned the samurai military paradigm and became a world economic force.

In contrast, Detroit will not be rebuilt, the natives will not abandon their liberalism and will just migrate to other cities to produce more Detroits.

Posted by: Fiberal at October 1, 2009 6:07 PM

The migration pattern is assured.
The predictive model is a roach-infested apartment.
When the apartment is abandoned, the roaches migrate into surrounding apartments that have food.

I actually know who took those...

If you ignore the flakiness, he's a good photographer, and has some nice stuff in his Flickr pool.

That last house at the bottom actually got restored, if I recall correctly, because it was a landmark. But yeah, most of the rest is falling to pieces. Sad, really. Detroit has some really nice Edwardian/art deco architecture.

Yes a great city and now a total hell hole this is the real future for us all and obama the little red will do all he can to rape the USA.

By the way the muslims have taken over this great old city and are using it to attack Americans some day soon. listen to savage nation.

Liberalism IS a plague, it has destroyed much more than all the nukes ever set off on this planet. While pretending to do good it has caused nothing but damage.

We gave JAPAN a DISNEY WORLD,McDONALDS,COKE, and we gave them aid after WW II and were on better relationship with JAPAN then with EUROPE

Posted by: SPURWING PLOVER at October 1, 2009 9:15 PM

Haven't seen the usual cry babys here defending their progressive utopia (except for one anon at the begining but they disappeared post haste).

Posted by: funkendunkel at October 1, 2009 9:40 PM

Just this morning they announced that we are sending 8 billion in aid to Pakistan.
I was going to make some snide remark about we should be sending this aid to our own people, but the sad truth is we could send 8 billion to Detroit and they would piss it away in no time and scream for more and nothing would be any better.
The gangs would than have new buildings to burn down and destroy. They would have new houses to sell drugs out of instead of old beat up ones.
All the money in the world cannot fix liberalism.

I gotta say that nuking Detroit would probably improve the property values.

Posted by: Drumwaster at October 2, 2009 9:29 AM

Another photo comparison would be Detroit and Havana - before and after pictures of cities from the sunshine days of civilization reduced to that dark night that the enlightenment fought and strived to defeat. Stick with the underlying philosophy, or lack of it, that brought about the destruction.

Posted by: Kevin R. at October 2, 2009 9:37 AM

Your idea was discussed back in the late eighties. It was a genius debate between Libtards and the logical people. Bill Buckley was one of the speakers.

Some tampon on the left was whining about how Asia and Europe were "doing so much better than us" and that both of those regions were "bombed back into the stone age", or something of that matter.

Buckley, in his awesomely awesomeness retorted, "So, naturally we should just bombed the entire east coast and that will set everything straight?". The libtard began to mutter something in some sort of verbal diarrhea when Buckley then quickly interjected, "and if you believe that idea, I am sleeping with your wife".

It was just too cool.

That was over 20 years ago.

Posted by: Disco Prime at October 2, 2009 11:41 AM

Liberalism is a mental disease these days, but the entire set of causes for Detroit's decline is not identified here. The FLIGHT OF CAPITAL shares much of the blame. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were rebuilt with CAPITAL. Detroit has been lacking that for a long time.

At any rate, re-taking Detroit will still require capital, but it cannot be given, since as such it will just be wasted ... like much of the money used to rebuild New Orleans. Detroit must be re-taken by one development at a time, and those developments must form their own municipalities in order to stop being taxed and unserviced by the existing Detroit political structure. Literally, economic development zones must start to eat their way inward, block by block if necessary.

Posted by: Edward Simmons at October 3, 2009 10:10 AM

Good comments, all. The feeling that goodness, morality and redevelopment can only be restored by retake the city "a block at a time" is understandable but, I think, a fantasy. In truth, why would any investor, any developer, any hard-working person want to do that? Developing, making things, is hard enough without deliberately accepting a big penalty before you even start!

No. Because land in the U.S. is plentiful, no one of quality is likely to 'sign up' for a lifetime battle with corrupt pols at city hall simply for the chance to work his ass off to redevelop Detroit. Accordingly, the city will continue on the path amply demonstrated, with the corrupt liberal pols looting the last drops of blood from the body.

Meanwhile Michael Moore will find a way to blame the whole situation on...capitalism.

Posted by: sf at October 3, 2009 11:01 PM

Hooray for death! It produces such beautiful buildings!! Look, the deaths of over 200,000 people resulted in a bunch of nice buildings? I hear that Oświęcim is lovely this time of year as well. Perhaps the twin towers were looking kinda shabby so it was a good thing 9/11 occurred!??? Morons!

Posted by: ronpaul2012 at October 4, 2009 2:09 PM

I, for one, believe we should nuke Detroit. It will either be rebuilt as a new and prosperous city or it will forever remain a slightly radioactive crater and a reminder of what happens to cities that embrace liberal ideologies. It's a 'win-win' proposition.
