United Nations Measures Its Footprint Size, Comes Up a Dollar Short
Besides their ruinous efforts at bringing about world peace, the United Nations is having a little trouble keeping its carbon footprint in check at this week's conference on global climate change - or even estimating it accurately, for that matter. From Fox News:
The New York Times reports U.N. administrators are attempting to calculate the carbon dioxide produced by the delegates in order to buy carbon offsets: They estimate 461 tons of carbon dioxide, with air travel being the single largest component. However, that tally only includes emissions from one aide traveling with each world leader and not the dozens of staff who frequently make up each country's delegation.
The aforementioned article in the Old Gray Whore effusively praises the U.N.'s "new and expanding program for offsetting emissions" that ultimately buys carbon offsets:
They offset those emissions by directing money to a power project in rural Andhra Pradesh, India, through which agricultural leftovers like rice husks and sunflower stalks are turned into electricity for the local grid.
Far be it for us to presume that the U.N. is simply trying to assuage their (misplaced) guilt over their under-estimated carbon footprint. Alas, it seems that the U.N.'s magnanimous generosity will only be exceeded by its coincidental stinginess. You see, the NYT reporter, all misty-eyed, forgot about one pesky little thing. FNC didn't, though:
One climate scientist points out that the value of carbon offsets -- a publicly traded commodity -- fell to 20 cents a metric ton late last week: Meaning 20 cents times 461 metric tons would equal spending $92 to offset their emissions.
Even if you multiply the estimated tonnage by 6 to roughly account for a dozen travelers minimum with each country's delegation, you still only come up with a little over $500 for those poor, power-starved Andhra Pradeshians. That's about enough to buy a gross of energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs, perhaps one for every home, if they're lucky. Fluorescent bulbs which, of course, will poison the earth with toxic mercury when they break during a typhoon.

Maryhunter you presume too much from the UN. They don't have missplaced guilt, they are the driving force of international government, and want to tax us with the carbon tax. They above all know that global warming is bullcrap.

Hey, I just want to say what a BIG DYKE RACHEL MADDOW is on MSNBC. (Oh and there site won't allow you to post unless they KNOW your E-mail, so if you say anything that upsets them they will call their KASTAPO on you!) Probably call you a JOOOOOooooooooo!
Who said the Nazi movement was dead? It's alive and well on MSNBC. Rachel Maddow is a mental case that should be studied in the name of science and then discarded for the safety of the public.

I am about as fond of Rachel MadCow as you are, Logic Mine. However, um... State-run MSNBC was not a part of this post. Relevance, man... relevance?
