Tom Brokaw Longs for the Days When the Media Was a Leftist Monopoly

Appearing on Meet the Press, Obama Fluffer Tom Brokaw lamented that the new media --- which broke the stories about Van Jones and ACORN that the state-run dinosaur media have refused to cover --- have a lack of quality control.

MR. BROKAW: Well, I've -- one of the things I've been saying to audiences is this question comes up a lot, and a lot of people will repeat back to me and take it as face value something that they read on the Internet. And my line to them is you have to vet information. You have to test it the same way you do when you buy an automobile or when you go and buy a new flat-screen television. You read the Consumer Reports, you have an idea of what it's worth and what the lasting value of it is. You have to do the same thing with information because there is so much disinformation out there that it's frightening, frankly, in a free society that depends on information to make informed decisions.

The American Spectator reminds us of some of the information that has been distorted, denied, or frankly fabricated by the legacy media of which Tom Brokaw was so proud to be a part.

  • JFK sharing a mistress with Chicago Mafia boss Sam Giancana
  • CBS News undertaking multiple hatchet jobs on Barry Goldwater in the run-up to the 1964 election.
  • Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee covering up the murder of his sister-in-law, another Kennedy mistress
  • The silence of the media on the affair Democrat Presidential candidate John Edwards was carrying on with Rielle Hunter
  • The aforementioned Van Jones and ACORN stories

You should really click the link and read the details. They're quite stunning. American Spectator writer Jeffrey Lord sums it up this way:

In other words, across five decades of American journalistic history, the instinct of many Old Media institutions -- specifically including NBC and the New York Times -- has been to deliberately withhold the truth. To quite deliberately use their journalism skills and tools to misrepresent those whose politics they do not favor.

Exactly. What Brokaw doesn't get is that he and the other talking heads have lost their hold on the public because the public knows the information they provide is neither useful nor reliable. If you want to watch skinny middle-aged women coo over M'Chel Obama's biceps while middle aged men repeat the DNC talking points of the day, you tune into the legacy media. If you want to know about official corruption, or want an analysis of legislation that's before Congress and what effect it will have on your life, you tune into Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh.

Oh poor dear, we can't control all media outlets and now people start standing up for themselves! We've spent millions trying to do this, it's so unfair! /sarc

I hereby nominate Tom Brokaw as the first recipient of the Duranty Award.

An example of uncontrolled media:

NO REQUIREMENTS!

Our leader has told us so!

Meanwhile, viewership and readership for government run media continue to decline.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

The largest newspaper in the State I live in used to be a very good newspaper; that was several decades ago. Now it's gone very downhill and has lost a lot of readership because all it does is print what other newspapers print and expect their readership to "just take it at face value." The editorials in that paper are now a bunch of sophomoric regurgitations of Leftwing talking points and reprints of same from other newspapers.

Actual journalism has found a new home.

I grew up with Cronkite, and Brokaw. They, and others like them, were the word, the news, the be all end all of information. Watching the nightly news was a family ritual, and in school we would be asked to discuss what Mr. Cronkite, and later Mr. Brokaw had said the night before. I it stayed that way most of my adult life until I got my first computer. It wasn't long until I realized that the tv was not telling me the truth. Blogs and news sites replaced Brokaw and Cronkite, and I realized I knew a hell of a lot more about currant events than I had before.
It's been years since I watched tv news.
Besides, blogs are funny, and bloggers have a hell of a lot more talent.

I remember those days, we'd watch Uncle Walt tell us "the way it is", only later to find out what an enemy he was. And Dan Blather and Tom Brokejaw and all of them. You know the journalists gave Blather an award after his resignation in disgrace? Listening to these dipshits go on about their quality makes me laugh now.

grayjohn: Like you, I remember the Huntley & Brinkley Report, Walter Concrete (who did have a great speaking voice, second only to Rush's I'd say) and the ABC'ers, who for the most part did a decent job in the early 1960's -- but with Walter's hatchet-job on the Vietnam War, after the Tet Offensive, and their bias becoming more obvious by the day, I tuned-out TV news almost entirely by the end of that decade.

What an epiphany the internet was (and is)! Not to mention Talk Radio. Nowadays, you can get the actual truth from sites like Moonbattery, Michelle Malkin, Debbie Schlussel, and many others (Prof. Glenn Reynolds, the "Instapundit," from my area, also comes to mind).

While Rush continues to be the foremost voice for genuine conservatism on the radio, I'm a die-hard fan of the Great One, and never miss his show (pod-casted, generally). It's no wonder his name, much less his accomplishments ("Liberty and Tyranny," amongst others) are never mentioned by the so-called mainstream media ("government-controlled" or "government-run," Rush's words, are entirely appropriate for these useful idiots) -- they have to be absolutely scared to death of Mark Levin, who eviscerates liberals and liberalism with humor, philosophy, the law, history, et al. (including a little humiliation), each and every day.

Don't know if you've tuned-in to him, but if not, give him a try; one show and I'll bet you'll be hooked (a good kind of addiction, however!). Best regards, jc14.

Thank God for the Internet and FNC is all I have to say.

** giggling about "Obama Fluffer" and "Walter Concrete" **

And the reason I can still giggle is because I DON'T watch or read the MSM.

"If you want to know about official corruption, or want an analysis of legislation that's before Congress and what effect it will have on your life, you tune into Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh."

Its perfect that you follow this up with a photo of a fake comedy journalist. That way we know what an effing joke you're making here.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 16, 2009 8:38 PM

Speaking of jokes, have you heard these: Van Jones! Air America! ACORN! Bwahahahahahahaha!

Posted by: Jay Guevara at September 16, 2009 8:53 PM

What's the betting line on a RICO indictment for ACORN? 10:1? And on an Obama resignation/impeaachment? 100:1?

The Messiah is done. Finished. Zagrito. Kaput. He hugged the tar baby that is ACORN, and now he's tarred with the same brush.

Next up: SEIU. C'mon, some patriotic US Attorney, step up! You know there's gold in them thar hills!

Exactly. Charles Gibson. Brian Williams. Tom Brokaw. Katie Couric. They're all jokes like Ron Burgundy.

Finally, a troll who gets it.

The "Legacy Media" is terminal, and they know it. These are just the dying gasps of "news" organizations with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

Posted by: WolfDog at September 17, 2009 7:13 AM

I wouldn't hold my breath for any indictment.

In the last administration, liberals were so eager to tar Dick Cheney that the word "Halliburton" could not be mentioned without noting Cheney's affiliation with the company.

Odumbo worked for ACORN, but, to hear the legacy media tell the story (when they aren't totally ignoring it), he "never had relations" with those people!

TOM BROKJAW, DAN BLATHER,BABA WAWA, AS WELL

Posted by: Flu-Bird at September 17, 2009 11:57 AM

Rich, you may be right. The difference, however, is that there's substance to these allegations - they're not just agitprop bullshit. Two weeks ago it would've been unthinkable that Senate and House Dems would vote wholesale against ACORN, yet here we are.

The Reds won't like it, but they could decide to sell out their comrades to get the heat off of themselves.

It's not super likely right now, but it's certainly possible. And there may be more tapes coming...

Damn, I feel good.
