San Francisco to Punish Stores That Sell Soda

The war on soda is going into overdrive in San Franfreakshow, where the degenerate mayor plans to punitively loot stores that dare sell it:

Calling soda the new tobacco, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will introduce legislation this fall that would charge a fee to retailers that sell sugary beverages.
Newsom would need voter approval to tax individual cans of soda and sugary juice, but only needs approval from the Board of Supervisors to levy a fee on retailers. …
Newsom wouldn't say how much the stores would have to pay or how the city would spend the fees. When he first floated the idea in 2007, he said the money would go to his Shape Up San Francisco exercise program and for media campaigns to discourage soda drinking.

At least when the Mafia forced storeowners to pay a fee not to have their windows broken, they had the honesty not to sanctimoniously pretend they were doing it for anyone's good but their own.

Vice president of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Jim Lazarus wonders,

Does this mean there's a fee on candy bars, on ice cream, on potato chips? Where do you draw the line?

If it's left to our liberal rulers, never. They will keep looting us and gnawing away at every liberty until progressive utopia is attained, and Americans are indistinguishable from farm animals that can't even imagine doing anything the farmer doesn't want them to.

Even before the imposition of ObamaCare, bureauweenies are using healthcare costs as a pretext to inflict totalitarian restrictions on every picayune aspect of our lives:

Mitch Katz, director of the city's Department of Public Health, said a study conducted over the past nine months shows a clear link between soda consumption and an increased burden on the public health system. He did not have a total dollar figure.
He said he considers a soda fee an incremental step, and that other sugary foods could someday have a surcharge as well.

Then they can go after every other substance that incurs their disapproval, until we're left to subsist on arugula and marijuana.

Only Big Government can protect us from this menace.

On tips from Emily, Wiggins, and Henry.

More proof that twisters hate freedom and business.

Since it would be an arbitrary tax on the retailer, that cost will not only get passed onto the consumer but it will cause EVERYTHING in that store to go up because I highly doubt that it would be a percentage of sugary sales...

And this is all under the guise of lowering healthcare costs by means of charging more for sugary items... yet, it's going to radically affect EVERYTHING.

It's like charging more for car parts to encourage people to use less gas... because that clearly makes sense.

Posted by: AmericanToTheCore at September 19, 2009 9:00 AM

What will be the next tax? How about a leather tax.

Posted by: joeswampy at September 19, 2009 9:29 AM

Tax bathhouses, poppers, feather boas, and AZT. Make a fortune in SF.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at September 19, 2009 9:37 AM

Seriously, though, is this the biggest public health problem they've got in SF?

Posted by: Jay Guevara at September 19, 2009 9:41 AM

I see a business opportunity for black market soda sales...

Of course forming a co-op to drive across the Bay Bridge and pick up cases of soda would be another solution....

Posted by: Jake at September 19, 2009 10:38 AM

Wouldnt they be "better" for you if they actually had sugar in them instead of corn syrup ? Which has become the sweetener of choice due to govt tarrifs .

It seems to me that removing the carbonation would be a good thing too , since CO2 is a greenhouse gas .As I watch the corpulant soda slurpers lumbering around the grocery , I have to ponder the size of the carbon footprint solely from their soda consumption .

I ponder it , yes , but I dont give a fuck . No .

Posted by: Katya Kakhov at September 19, 2009 10:51 AM

I really like the part about how they're ready to take on the lawsuits.

And when the lawsuits cost more than the funds generated from the new fees...?

Posted by: Henry at September 19, 2009 10:51 AM

"shows a clear link between soda consumption and an increased burden on the public health system."

Bullshit. I've been drinking 2-3 sodas a day for 40+ years, and rarely visit my doctor. None of my visits were cola-induced.
They want to tax soda because of the huge volume of sales; you'll never hear of a 'tofu tax'.

This is the same city of wackos that banned plascic grocery bags for some amount of green spupidy and have banned military recruters wanted to turn lumbard street into a stupid bike path and tried to ban guns ITS ONE CITY TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS and its home to the CHURCH OF SATAN

Posted by: Flu-Bird at September 19, 2009 11:24 AM

How about they tax homosexuals for the costs that their "lifestyle choices" impose on the health care industry? AIDS is not exactly inexpensive and it's clearly preventable. Oh, that's right, this is SanFranFuckedUp and they're occupied with this witch hunt instead.

Jim Lazarus ask where the left will draw the line. The answer is the left will never be satisfied.

Posted by: shunha at September 19, 2009 11:37 AM

OK I have to share this.

I posted this on Facebook last night, and here is a comment I received from an old girlfriend. I would like to see what others here at Moonbattery think and how they might reply.

I am torn here... as you know, my liberal roots run deep and FAR to the left... yet, the older I get, the more I distrust the choices the "general public" makes. It seems like these days 90% of "the people" are uneducated, uniformed, and unable to see through the attempts made by mass media, religious groups and MANY others to influence them to make BAD choices! Over the last 20 years I have switched from trying to educate and influence others (including strangers) in an effort to create MASS social change, to focusing on influencing individuals. I have found that many people are ready to admit that they don't have the critical logic skills or info required to make good decisions and are happy to allow me (or other trusted relations) to "help them to make the right choices" for them. Sometimes, "the people" DO need government to make the right choices for them... such as in the case of slavery, for one example. Right now, I trust Obama's logic MORE than the "general public"!!!

I really do want to know what the rest of you think.

Posted by: Henry at September 19, 2009 12:40 PM

I forgot to add that I referenced this quote from the article:

"It makes sense for the government to help people to make the right choices."

This isn't about sugar. If it were, they would be taxing fruit juices, most of which have more calories than a can of Coke. No, it's about punishing sin.

Posted by: Bob Smith at September 19, 2009 1:38 PM

What do I think, Henry? I think that's absolutely frightening. It shows a arrogance, lack of judgment, no common sense, and absolute failure of knowledge of history.

She should try to get a post in the Obama administration.

Posted by: Evil Otto at September 19, 2009 2:55 PM

"Henry at September 19, 2009 12:40 PM"

Tell her to go and beg the federal government to take care of her; it's obvious that she's finnished as a human being.

Honestly, I would LOVE to be there to hear her tell her sad story to Hopey. Or better yet, put her and others like her on TV:
"This is your brain on Obamunism. Any questions?"

Posted by: KHarn at September 19, 2009 2:58 PM

Henry: It looks like she's been a complete moonbat for so long that instead of being able to grow out of it, she's putrifying. Obviously hopeless. If she tried to influence my child I would have to hurt her.

Posted by: Mr Evilwrench at September 19, 2009 3:10 PM

Henry, one word.

Hopeless.

Scratch that, two.

Elitist.

Posted by: AmericanToTheCore at September 19, 2009 3:52 PM

That sort of attitude is common among the left... the idea that "the masses" are idiots, "sheeple," and need to be led and helped by their betters for their own good. What's remarkable is that people like Henry's old girlfriend never think of themselves as among the ones needing to be led. No, they are always the leaders, always smarter, always better than the rabble. You see it in people like Al Gore, who lives a monstrously carbon-intensive lifestyle while telling us that we must do without. Michael Moore is another, someone who hates capitalism while he has grown fat... well, er, fatter on the free market.

They always think that they are the ones to create "Social change," and if the common peasants don't like it they should just shut up. After all, their leaders know what is best.

Posted by: Evil Otto at September 19, 2009 4:22 PM

I suggest that they TAX GAY PORN and SEXUAL DEVICES.
Then you'll see the LIBERAL LEFT scream UNFAIR TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!

You have to hit them back where they hold things dear. Next, their precious PRIUS's

Posted by: Logic Mine at September 19, 2009 4:23 PM

@ Henry

That, to me, is typical lefty attitude and twisted thought.

This is type of infection permeates the left.

How about the even clearer link between homosexual practices and the increased burden on the public health system? You don't have to look very hard to find that.

Right now, I trust Obama's logic MORE than the "general public"!!!

I would trust my golden retriever's logic MORE than hers.

"It makes sense for the government to help people to make the right choices."

She needs a husband to "help" her make the right choices. I wouldn't let her order dinner on her own, much less make any more weighty decision.

Translated for Shunha:

"I'm so much smarter than you, you should let me run your life for you."

Posted by: Henry at September 19, 2009 12:40 PM- "I really do want to know what the rest of you think."

Henry, she is gone. The venom injected into her brain has destroyed her logic, free will, and self preservation. The chance to purge herself of the lavae laid within has passed. The pupae has consumed her from within, she is now a fully active, adult communist parasitoid in search of new hosts to perpetuate the species. It would be safer to be in close proximity with a funnel web spider, than this particular arthropod.

I do trust my dog has more logic than any lefty and that's a fact. I have watched my dog do things that make a lefty look like a lower species.

I firmly believe that comparison to be valid.

Posted by: Dave at September 19, 2009 7:14 PM

Aaaack!! Henry, she doesn't have the critical logic skills to admit she's an arrogant, condescending nitwit and needs your help to make the right choices for her!

Posted by: Jay Guevara at September 19, 2009 5:21 PM

-----------

She would take her husband to divorce court and claim domestic violence as the reason for the divorce and the government would giver her everything her husband ever had, made or will make. Big papapa government will make the right choice for her at the detriment of any man that marries her. That type of woman is best left as a short term whore for some F & C action and that's it. Women that far to the left and nitwitty make for crappy relationships.

Posted by: Moonbat SkullCracker at September 20, 2009 2:11 AM

The fascinating thing is her reasoning, if you'll pardon the exaggeration. She trusts Obama's logic more than the general public's. She thinks the government should help people make "the right choices."

Uh, missy, who exactly elected Obama, and government officials? Hmm? Who exercised its collective judgment to put Obama in office? Hmm? The very same people whose judgment you think is lousy, and who cannot be trusted to make decisions.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at September 20, 2009 10:21 AM

Thanks everyone for your input. You all pretty much covered my own thoughts about her comment. I am absolutely repulsed by the mindset which allows someone the arrogance displayed. I wasn't sure how, or if, I should respond. After pondering for a few days, I've decided it's useless to reply. Any response would most likely be met with the same arrogance, and I'd just be lumped in with those "uneducated, uniformed" people she feels superior to.

Thanks again.

ACORN......

Posted by: Dave at September 20, 2009 10:41 AM

Henry, if I might make so bold as to put in my $0.02, I've found the best way to deal with barking moonbats among friends and such is the Socratic method, i.e., asking questions that lead them to a conclusion.

Another, extremely effective strategy is to parse issues between principle and practice. For example, re ACORN, say something like "Suppose for the moment that the tapes are 100% valid. Would you then still support ACORN?" If she says, "No," then ask her what evidence it would take to convince her that they were valid.

Leftists tend either by design, to misdirect discussion or by cognitive deficits to conflate issues (e.g., "the tapes came from Fox, and I don't trust Fox!"). This separates the conflated issues into their constituent parts (in this case, Fox, a bogus issue manufactured by the Reds as cover, from the real issue, ACORN's reprehensible conduct).

Try it. It works, it keeps friends, and it sometimes even changes minds.

Wow, there are some incredibly ignorant and hateful comments in here. Have all you SF bashers ever even lived here? It is a great place to be.

Not that I agree with this bullshit, because I don't. But some of you people need to stop being so ignorant.

Posted by: SF resident at September 20, 2009 12:38 PM

JG, your $0.02 is appreciated. I've got a pretty good handle on dealing with moonbats encountered in my daily life. This is an old girlfriend from college (18 years ago). About 10 years ago, we got reacquainted when I moved to San Diego to take a job with a SCUBA equipment manufacturer. I literally hadn't seen or heard from her since I left SD in 2000, but she turned up on Facebook a few months ago.

It's all good; just stunning to see that kind of disdain for other human beings. I'm sure she thinks she's "enlightened". If that's enlightenment, I don't want any.

Wow, there are some incredibly ignorant and hateful comments in here. Have all you SF bashers ever even lived here? It is a great place to be.

Oh, yes. It's beautiful - the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, the TransAmerica building, Chinatown, to name a few.

But live there? "A great place to be?" Yes, if you like paying $1500/mo for a one bedroom apartment, dealing with fog year-round, wearing a hoodie in July, never being able to find a parking space, meeting all kinds of, ah, colorful characters on the bus, living under the constant threat of a devastating earthquake, dealing with some of the most horrible traffic known to man, rarely being able to find a parking space, driving up and down 45-degree-angle hills, having your city associated with all manner of perversion and moonbat politics...not to mention being governed by a mayor and city council that run the place like their own personal fiefdom.

Other than that, yeah, it's a great place to live.

Don't call me ignorant. I live only 2 hours from The Special City and visit several times a year. I've noticed that the rest of the Bay Area is "normal," it's only SF proper that seems to be in a parallel universe where the laws of physics (and of common sense) don't seem to apply.

Not that I agree with this bullshit, because I don't. But some of you people need to stop being so ignorant.

Oh, so you don't think that the city government has the right to tell law-abiding, tax-paying adults what they can and cannot drink? That's big of you.

Don't assume the city's critics are "ignorant." It's one of the most popular tourist destinations in the continental US. Plenty of us have been there and experienced firsthand what it has to offer - good and bad.

Posted by: Cylar at September 21, 2009 12:24 AM

Did I mention being run off the road by cable cars and MUNI buses? Silly me, I forgot to mention those.

Oh, and the homeless. SF is a haven for them. They're here, they're aggressive, and darn it they want your dough.

Gosh, did I forget anything?
