Massive Turnout for DC Tea Party

By all accounts, the turnout for the 9-12 Tea Party in the District of Criminals today was massive. Even the New York Times has been forced to acknowledge it:

A sea of protesters filled the west lawn of the Capitol and spilled onto the National Mall on Saturday in the largest rally against President Obama since he took office, a culmination of a summer-long season of protests that began with an opposition to health care and grew into a broader dissatisfaction with government.

Opposition to healthcare? They must have meant defense of healthcare from nationalization, which anyone with the least awareness of what's going on in Britain and Canada knows would destroy it.

On a cloudy and cool day, the demonstrators came from all corners of the country, waving American flags and handwritten signs explaining the root of their frustrations. Their anger stretched well beyond the health care legislation moving through Congress, with shouts of support for gun rights, lower taxes and a smaller government.
But as they sang verse after verse of patriotic hymns like "God Bless America," sharp words of profane and political criticism were aimed at Mr. Obama and Congress.

Profane from the point of view of the statist media, that is. It's leftist protestors who are known for foul language.

The crowd numbered well into the tens of thousands, though police declined to provide an estimate of the size of the crowd. Many of the participants simply came on their own and were not part of an organization or group. But the size of the rally took the authorities by surprise, with throngs of people streaming from the White House to Capitol Hill for more than three hours.

"Well into the tens of thousands" might be putting it mildly. We may never know how many turned out, but it was certainly enough to send a very clear message to our rulers. America isn't just going to roll over and die.

On a tip from Bergbikr.

Yep and where is the shit head state controlled media?

Hiding in fear.

Posted by: Dave at September 12, 2009 2:04 PM

over at the fever-swamps, they are cooking up some conspiracy that michelle malkin doctored some photos(which were actually from the morning) to make the crowd look bigger than it was, after she relayed that abc quoted "2 million" and dc police "1.2-1.5 million" which would dwarf the "immaculation", the meme over there is it was no more than 20,000, lolz.

Posted by: weewilly at September 12, 2009 2:06 PM

VH, I sent you some pics of the dc event. It was massive. A totally energized crowd. Ages ranged from newborns to 90+, people of every race and creed, Americans of all shapes and sizes, handicapped, vets, men, women, seniors, Asians, Africans, jeebus...people even brought their friekin' pets. It was the most amazing mass spectacle I've ever seen. I've never seen that many people packed onto the mall before. The media is totally misreporting this thing as "extremists" with Hilter posters etc. 99 % of the protesters and signs were about government size, government spending, health care, and freedom. I saw one (1) (uno) Pelosi=Hilter poster, but no references of that nature to Obama or anyone else. The vast, vast, vast majority of the protesters were all about government excess and irresponsibility.

Here's how I calculated:

Live shots of the crowd from Fox News showed crowd filled the lawn area of the mall from in front of Capitol to Washington Monument. Using Google Earth, I measured the distances. Length = 5650 feet; width = 220 feet. I used an estimate of 4 square feet per person (very, very generous estimate). I rounded down the measurements I took from Google Earth. Here's the math:

5280' x 200' = 1,056,000 sqft

1,056,000 sqft รท 4 sqft/person = 264,000

I'm actually more inclined to go with 2-3 sqft/person, giving another estimate of 352,000 to 528,000. Of course, I have no idea how many people were outside of the area I used for calculations.

In conclusion, I'm going with an estimate of 264,000 to 528,000 (average of 396,000). We're talking at least 10x what the MSM is reporting.

I'll keep looking for estimates from various sources for a while and post back later if anything later.

"But the size of the rally took the authorities by surprise, with throngs of people streaming from the White House to Capitol Hill for more than three hours."

Must have been relying on the State Media.

"The media is totally misreporting this thing as "extremists" with Hilter posters etc."

The media and Charles Johnson. I decided to see how he was covering this, and he thinks every speaker is a "birhter", "dominionist" (Jim DeMint), "Pailian", "Bircher" or "creationist". And then he calls other people "conspiracy theorists". Anyway, I quit reading that blog a while back, but it's gone completely insane in the meantime. It's pretty much a myopic D-Kos in green.

Seems the State Run Media is stuck on the "tens of thousands" meme. Couldn't admit it, even if they wanted to. The local NBC outlet ran more video of the 0's address than the demo in D.C.

Your estimate of 250 - 500,000 is outlandish. The inauguration was 800,000 and people were jammed in like sardines for ten blocks in every direction. The metro wasn't even crowded today; It was quite literally as crowded as a weekday rush-hour normally is. Promisekeepers, million man march, and even the million mom march outdid this exponentially. I'd say there were between 60,000 and 100,000.

Oh, and yes, there were a lot of Hitler posters. Don't pretend they weren't there. There were even more posters equating Obama to Stalin, Lenin, Marx, or Mao, but it's all essentially the same when you compare him to mass murderers responsible for 10s of millions of deaths.

Posted by: James at September 12, 2009 3:39 PM

stick to the meme: 20,000 no more no less, lolz. in reality it was obviously between on the "conservative" side 900,000 and on the more "liberal" side 1.5-2 million, but if 60k helps you get to sleep tonight more power to you.

I have done the same type of calculation when I did an out door event some summers ago but I used a a radius of 3 feet per person, equates to an arms length. I would say your calculation is some what close.

James is clueless.

Posted by: Dave at September 12, 2009 3:57 PM

Right on weewilly! Liberals will do anything to down play this grass roots movement. They have been found out for what they really are.

Socialist.

We surround them and they are scared shitless.

These are very appropriate comparisons, Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Marx, and Mao were all socialists just like His "O"lliness, and none of them had achieved the status of "mass murderers" at the stage in their career your Dear Leader is at now. In fact I am not aware of Marx actually being responsible directly for any deaths.

Many, many socialist liberals are eating their own crap, today. And they will eat more and more and more of it as the months move to the next election.

You and your little brown gawd had your chance and you dropped the ball.

Socialist liberalism in America will die.

Move to Canada or France, dipshits.

Posted by: Jimbo at September 12, 2009 4:13 PM

I am SERIOUSLY IMPRESSED at the turnout! Thanks to all those who could go!! (I live near enough, but with bad knees and back, I'd have lasted about 20 minutes tops... )

BUT I do promise you all I will put in my 2 cents when VOTING time comes!!

HURRAH!

Posted by: Ex-bat at September 12, 2009 4:51 PM

James is totally clueless.

Estimates for Chairman Zero's Coronation were calculated with almost the same methods I used. Their estimate was 1.0-1.4 million on The Mall. That's a lot more than James-Shit-for-Brains' baseless number.

Fuck yourself James.

Posted by: Henry at September 12, 2009 5:06 PM

Post and run James?

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!!!

These are voters that have had enough.

We will win in 2010!!!!!!

A great day for America; a terrifying day for Reds. Capping a week when Glenn scored a couple of scalps, and those filmmakers punched ACORN's ticket, permanently.

Damn I feel good...

Posted by: James at September 12, 2009 3:39 PM- "...There were even more posters equating Obama to Stalin, Lenin, Marx, or Mao, but it's all essentially the same..."

You're quite right. The Indonesian imbecile is merely a Chairman Mao wannabe. Those fellows were very accomplished communists, and did not rely on affirmative action to obtain a carnival ride to the top. Posters displaying the visages of comrades Zuma and Mugabe would have been fairer and much more apt, wouldn't you agree?

Posted by: chairman soetoro's oprichniki at September 12, 2009 8:35 PM

The Chairman is right. Compared to Stalin, Lenin, Marx, or Mao, Soetoro is a towel boy in a bathhouse.

Dave, you'll like this. My wife is British, and she's dead impressed. She says one of the most impressive things about Americans is that they don't take any shit. When Americans are unhappy, they don't just sit around and whinge: you're gonna hear about it, and in no uncertain terms.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at September 12, 2009 9:09 PM

Our founding fatheres would be impressed at these patiots showing their freedom of expression

Posted by: Flu-Bird at September 13, 2009 8:13 AM

Liberals take note;
Americans are angry but were not violent;
The Capitol building was surrounded by angry Americans;
No one was armed yesterday;
Things change!

Sure hope the Brits set their rulers streight and run those dirty pesky MOOOOOOSLIMS off the island.

Posted by: Dave at September 13, 2009 12:44 PM

The amount of retards that showed up at this stupid little thing in Washington DC was no higher than 70,000, according to Washington DC police, and that still look like the high end to me. We don't need rednecks hindering our progress. These idiots at the corporate tea parties need to put up or shut up, or better yet, just get the hell out of here and leave us who have brains alone.
