Liberal Fascists Will Have to Think of a New Name for Themselves
According to Rasmussen (a pollster despised by the left because his polling does not show overwhelming support for Chairman Zero), the word "liberal" remains out of favor, and the word "progressive" is falling out of favor. Perhaps because the policies championed by those who call themselves "progressives" are, in fact, regressive in the sense that they empower a state autocracy and rob individuals of autonomy.
Far left social democrats will have to rebrand themselves again, perhaps with something that more accurately describes their political objectives; like nationalized health care and socialist redistribution of wealth. National socialist is already taken, however.

Since they think they OWN IT ALL and don't have to pretend anymore...NAZI...will be their next logo. National American Socialist Party (translated).

Not to be a spoil sport, but "conservative as a term" is exactly as popular as "progressive" at 32%, whilst it is slightly more unfavorable than progressive, at 29% to 27%. Maybe Americans just don't like labels?
Posted by: Ben at September 11, 2009 1:18 PM
Some rebranding wouldn't hurt conservatives either, especially after the way the term was misused by Bush and abused by McCain. I've been suggesting conservatives rebrand as pragmatists.
Posted by: Gregory of Yardale at September 11, 2009 1:25 PM
Conservatives need to rebrand their pols. Get some that are actually CONSERVATIVE.
Posted by: TED at September 11, 2009 1:27 PM
I don't know where Ben get his numbers but given mainstream medias constant efforts to cast conservative ideals or individuals in a negative light, it wouldn't be that surprising. Did anyone notice the other night how Obama referred to his side of the aisle as "Progressives" and the other as Republicans?

statist autocrats? brain-dead drones?
TED is right on, no re-branding necessary just elect "conservatives" instead of squishy rinos, to borrow from the left's "thought-process" the non-conservatives just don't know what's good for them, they'll come around just like they did with Ronaldus Magnus.

Ben got his numbers from the Rasmussen survey that was initially cited.

time to take over another treasured institution gut it, replace its leaders and vote the power of its constituency in ignorance. at least thats what the comenterm said to do back in the 30s.
its 1930s all over again...
same ideological battle (oligarcy vs republic)
same keneysian economics crippling us
same violent unions
heck... how many names have the communists worked under in the US?
progressives, collectivists, authoritarians, communistarians, modern liberal (vs JSM liberal), marixsts, leninists, maoists, trotskyites, nazis, and tons more..
all synonyms for the ideology with variations..
If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place, oblige it to control itself.
James Madison - Federalist 51
There are really only two forms of STABLE government – Republics, and Oligarchies…
Anarchy degrades and becomes a Oligarchy
Democracy degrades to anarchy and then becomes an Oligarchy
Royalty, Communism, Despotism, Nazism, Fascism, Maoism, Socialism, and all the others are Oligarchies…
(Even if there is rule by one, that one is supported by others who are elite too)
A Republic is rule by law, and is the ONLY form of government that has a middle class, and a government that serves the people.
CHANGE….
If we WERE a Republic, we are going to end up an Oligarchy (if we change)
If we WERE ruled by law in a Republic, we are going to be ruled by Whims of the Elite
Where we had order, it will become capricious
Where we had stability, we will have constant change
Where we had freedom, we will have servitude
Change you can believe in…
THIS is why no matter what your in you try to earn as much as you can.
For if it changes from a republic tis better to be in the class of oligarchs when it changes,
rather than the worm food they make of the rest of the population.

How about Constitutionalists? Doesn't sound like a dirty word to me.
The MSM likes to misuse "conservative." They'll refer to the Taliban or the Saudi royals as "conservative."
Posted by: Karin at September 11, 2009 1:53 PM
The figures aren't bad. Liberals and progressives are thick in the media. They push positively for those terms and despite this they are becoming negative words. On the contrary, conservative - though relentlessly bagged - is roughly holding its own.
Actually it is the sign of the brain dead to label one-self. I think Ben's right - either we dont like labels or we don't take them too seriously. We are more akin to Julietists - "What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
The very fact that the word RINO has become well known is a reflection of this.

How about the "Seven Ups", for the Seven Deadly Sins that liberals love so dearly?
Lust: One bookend of modern liberalism. As their love affair with unrestricted abortion license demonstrates, liberals will protect at any cost the ability to avoid the consequences of screwing people they're not married to.
Envy: ...of everyone who makes more money than they do. The fact that some people make more money than others is something liberals seek to correct with...
Greed: Taking ever-larger chunks of other people's money.
Sloth: "What, you mean I have to study and work and save and obey the law to make a sustainable living in a free-market economy? Screw that...where are my benefits?"
Gluttony: Especially when they're feeding at the public trough.
Wrath: Check out Daily Kos or Democratic Underground sometime, the denizens of which make the most shrill conservative ranters here look like cloistered Sisters of Mercy by comparison.
Pride: The other bookend of modern liberalism. How so? Oh, let us count the ways:
** When not denying the existence of God, they're claiming to be His "true" servants.
** Always champing at the bit to tell you how compassionate and caring they are, and how intolerant and mean-spirited those who don't agree with them are.
** Boast of being "reality-based", "reality" being something that they value in the abstract but in every instance ignore in the particular.
** They fancy themselves as being as gentle as Mother Theresa, as charming as Audrey Hepburn, as forgiving as St. Therese, and as filled with the concern for men as Florence Nightingale and of concern for women of Susan B. Anthony; in truth, they exhibit the gentleness of Lizzie Borden, the grace and charm of Rosie O’Donnell, the forgiveness of Madame DeFarge, the concern for men of Aileen Wuornos and the concern for women of the Marquis de Sade.
I'm trying to come up with an official slogan - or maybe even something like an official soft drink - to go with the name, but I'm drawing a blank....

actually, they would be the Menshiviks...
the bolsheviks created war socialism, which created wwii as a facilitator.

Ben,
Given the inherently positive connotations of "progressive" and "liberal", it is amazing that a word like "conservative" as opposed to say, "patriot", manages to hold the same position percentage-wise. Add to that the tremendous media bias (FOX this, FOX that... take a gander at ABC sometime, or any "popular" show, like Family Guy or The Simpsons) and I think Van Helsing was just pointing out that despite majorities in both House and Senate, owning the executive branch, and basically owning the fourth estate, "progressive" is still losing steam. Wasn't so much about comparison as making a point about the "progressive" movement. Americans hate labels? What the hell are all those PAC's and Protestant churches about? I wish Americans hated labels; they do not.

Art, actually I believe war socialism started with WWI Germany, and was later adopted by the Bolsheviks.

How about simply calling them Traitors?
Posted by: SK at September 11, 2009 3:47 PM
How about "Americans" for us, and whatever for them? It doesn't really matter what they're called, because the name will rapidly take on negative associations.
Look at the progression: relief, welfare, AFDC. Basically, handouts to the workshy. Or ACORN's recent attempt to change its name to Community Organizations International. Why? Because in both cases the shabby concept to which the name refers eventually puts stink on the name.
When people catch on, and get that knowing look on their faces when the name is mentioned, it's time for a new name. Liberal? Nope. Progressive. Progressive? Nope. Something else. But everyone knows the truth: they're Reds, no matter what they call themselves.

"Traitors" works for me.

I prefer worthless pieces of shit unworthy to kiss my salt-encrusted, bucksin ass. I told that to a coworker who was singing the praises of obambozo and company. Had to have a chat with the supervisor on that one. But no record of it was taken. Most of the people on our aircraft assembly line's last two positions were like me, retired from The Armed Forces of The United States. They understood that other pecking order.

Art, actually I believe war socialism started with WWI Germany, and was later adopted by the Bolsheviks.
actually not... but i can see where the confusion comes from as the term was used differently on one level and then later similarly to expand the realty of later to other times to 'normalize' it. much the same as with suffragets and feminists who claim that they were feminists... they werent, they were suffragets. but the left/sociailsts find that they can create the air of ligitimacy by tying together similar things and putting them under one umbrella so now your not part of a new movement, but an ancient order.
war socialism was truly created at the signing of the molotov pact with germany. it was then that national socialism, and international socialism combined their power in order to realize the war that engels predicted that would bring a conflagration (holocaust had not been made up yet) that would sweep the the world and create basically the utopia. both hitler and stalin exterminated proletariat as they are not destined to be in utopia other than to make it real for the elite.

I always thought that Regressives was appropriate since they through their bogus environmental stands would like us to revert back to the stone age.
Posted by: czekmark at September 12, 2009 8:18 AM
Appellations for the left are rather like diapers. After they had soiled "progressive" ones, they co-opted from the right (curiously, without much resistance)"liberal" ones. When they tried to switch back they discovered the progressive nappies had not been properly washed. What now? A pose by any other name...
As to the right, I'd like to see them establish a robust sub-set -- constitutional conservative.
Posted by: Wynne at September 12, 2009 8:44 AM
I like Regressives.
I like Constitutional Conservatives.
Regressive goes particularly well with other words - like Green Regressive.
