Berkeley Signs UN Treaties
Unwilling to wait for the kakistocracy in DC to drag the entire country down to its level on unhinged moonbattery, Berkeley is signing United Nations treaties as if it were a sovereign country:
Berkeley became the first city in the United States, and possibly the world, to agree to international human rights treaties on Tuesday night, after the City Council approved a measure usually reserved for countries.
After a brief but spirited debate, the City Council voted unanimously to allow unpaid interns to report to the United Nations on how, or whether, Berkeley complies with treaties on civil liberties, racial discrimination and torture.
Uh oh, Berserkeley may be in for a sternly worded letter of reprimand from the UN:
The treaties contain high standards, and it is possible Berkeley does not meet those standards, backers of the plan said.
They have used as examples Berkeley's record on homelessness, achievement gaps in the public schools and John Yoo, the author of the Bush administration's justification for torture who teaches at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law and lives in Berkeley.
If the goons in blue helmets ever start enforcing their absurd resolutions, Berkeley residents are advised to lock up their children — not that many people in their right minds would try to raise children in the Bay Area anyway.
Commenter WarEagle82 at Michelle Malkin has more news from Berkeley:
This just in! The Berkeley City Council, led by the magnificent yet humble Max Anderson, have voted to suspend the law of gravity and have voted that photons must stop behaving as both particles and waves. Gay whale shamans were present to give their blessings.
Film not available due to a sudden darkness that descended over the city after the vote.
Congratulations to Berkeley on its secession from America. Now if only San Francisco and Oakland would follow suit.

On a tip from AmericanToTheCore.

It's really funny the way you always take the names of people and places you don't like and make them sound stupid, like Berserkley and San Fransicko.
Well done.
Posted by: aquatarkus at September 30, 2009 11:03 AM
You'd think a city with a university might have a copy of the US Constitution gathering dust somewhere. If they opened it they would learn that treaties, once approved by the Senate, join in the supreme law of the land. So if the US has approved a treaty they are already covered. If not then the council does not have authority to join in any treaty with a foreign government.
Not sure how it works on planet Berkley but that's how it is done here.

I think we should let the UN troops into Kalifornia to enforce that treaty. Of course the US would have to recuse its troops due to conflict of interest (too tempting to just clean it out and start over).
Alternative: let the Reconquistas have Mexifornia. Seal off the new border with guns and claymore mines. Let them enjoy.

LittleMissPerfect, run!
I'm from SF originally, and went to Berkeley, and have turned down any number of employment offers to return to the Bay Area because a) we have kids too (young boys no less - yikes!), b) I didn't want to go around pissed off all the time, and c) I was concerned that whatever is wrong with people there might be catching, or in the water supply or something.

See how that works?
So in your mind, it's "horrible and depicable" to have a contrary opinion that exposes the hypocrisy on the leftist side. Gotcha.
And I hate to tell you this, but it's not very "nice" of your side to trash-talk or make fun of people on our side, no matter what your lame justification. So nice try on the moral outrage, but again, you're not fooling anyone but yourself.
Do you like being made fun of by our side, even though we think your side is "horrible" and "despicable"? Nope, didn't think so. Clean up your own act before you tell us how to behave.
Posted by: Nunya at September 30, 2009 1:25 PM
Jay, cool to hear you're from there too. I lived about a quarter of my life there.
The tragedy of the Bay Area is that it is indeed a once-beautiful city turned into a human latrine. In fact, over 100 metric tons of human waste are cleaned off the streets annually.
As a sidenote, the monthly city check paid to homeless individuals comes to - in addition to federal welfare benefits - more than the starting pay scale of a public school teacher.
But what gets to me is the smugness. The attitude of superiority of a Bay Area resident must be seen to be believed. They marvel at their ill luck of being stuck in the same country as the rest of us ignorant, unwashed troglodytes.
When I go up there for business I have to prepare to be bathed in the light of Bay Area politics, freed from the shackles of the long-dead regime known as America.

I doubt Obama's first political opponents, the three people he smeared out of the campaign, think he is a nice guy. I doubt the bank where he used ACORN thug tactics to extort mortgage loans to minorities unable to pay them back idolize him as you do either.
Personally I think John Stewart is not a nice guy for his behavior during the Bush administration so he could get a laugh from his audience of trained clapping seals.
I ridicule them because they are both clowns just like the public images I see from residents of Berkley. I know there are some normal people there but what other determination can a reasonable adult draw from the juvenile antics of Code Pink ?
The reason so many actors and comediennes speak for the left is because the Left in this country is a pretentious joke. The Left literally elected an actual jokester to the US Senate.
Posted by: IOpian at September 30, 2009 1:50 PM
Air2Air, I go back to the era when SF was a Democratic town in the blue-collar and ethnic sense, more like Pittsburgh than Pyongyang. It was a great city before the liberal infestation metastized SF's reputation for tolerance into one of license and depravity. Does anyone think that the Italians of North Beach, or the Chinese of Chinatown, were big fans of the change?
The problem is that tolerating eccentric behavior eventually degenerated into tolerating depraved behavior, and ultimately into applauding depraved behavior, which is where we find ourselves now.

Wellstoned,
You'd obviously be more at home in Cuba or Venezuela, so why not do the USA a favor and move to one of those turd-world, Marxist cesspools you admire so much? ANSWER: Because you know what messed up places they are, though you're not honest enough to admit it. You would rather stay in America (Which you hate),subvert it, undermine it, and trash it every which way you possibly can.
Posted by: Refuter of Liberal Vermin at September 30, 2009 5:53 PM
That's essentially what it boils down to RoLV...
Every policy that liberals want to impose in America are the exact same policies that already exist in other countries. Yet, these people seem hell-bent on altering our way of life to conform to their beliefs, even though they have the option of leaving the US of A.
They must derive some sort of pleasure out of change for the sake of change, regardless of its effects on the surrounding environment (USA as a whole, not literally the "environment").
That's why I ask every liberal I meet... "If it's so great, you're more than welcome to leave. When can I count on you to pack up and go to your already-existing socialist utopia?"
Same thing goes for global warming. They blame humanity for it, want to curb populations (terminating the old, abortions, ration food supplies by man-made droughts)... yet NONE of them will take that giant leap "for the betterment of society." Until they can live up to their words and be the first to lead the way, I will never take their words for anything beyond mindless rhetoric.

You Republican voters are too much like your like party. For the last 8 years liberals were told "YOU ARE ANTI-American!!!" because we questioned Bush's policies, while you were patriots. It is the Hypocrisy Driven Chorale!

You don't love America as it exists. Like ALL American Leftists, you love the Marxist America that you wish to see the real America become.
Posted by: Refuter of Liberal Vermin at September 30, 2009 6:25 PM
Yes, it pretty much IS that single payer plan you want to force on us. You want to live under that? Go do so. Who's stopping you? Think there are others that should live under it? Take some with you. Why is it so important to you to force it on the rest of us? Those of us who recognise what we have to be demonstrably far superior, except for the extent that government has already corrupted it, and don't want government to subsume the rest of it.

To all you really smart libs who have taken the time to post.
“Socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it”
Thomas Sowell
Now's the part where you..well...ignore or evade it.
Right smart guy?
Posted by: Angry Fletch at September 30, 2009 6:29 PM
Evil, the emergency room is not health care, and kowtowing to insurance companies could soon be a pre-existing condition. I am sorry "option" is not in your dictionary. But, I have to repeat, you, Helsing and others parrot this nonsense that "a government option won't work and then it will be so good it will put insurance companies out of business". Make up your mind! And you wonder why you are called hypocrites? We have had death panels for years, they are called insurance companies, not the Bush or Obama, unless they send you off to a foolish war.
As for Fletch, you need to do a bit better than Sowell, who's column I read in the Detroit News. His so called record of "so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it” is funny, yet is wrong. Even socialized countries who have elected and re-elected conservative leaders continue to cling to their health care, schools and free college.
Posted by: Ghost of Wellstone at September 30, 2009 7:05 PM
Wellstone, 1st, you don't know me. 2nd, I DID in fact give a shit about NYC, especially since I have family there. I like the city despite it's retarded laws. The people there take some getting used to for a small town man, but I still adore the architecture, shows, landmarks, museums, nightlife and shopping.
I suggested having them just leave America based on how far out of touch they are culturally, ideologically and legally with the rest of this fine nation. I suggest something along the line of Vatican City. It's own micro-nation.
Much love!
Posted by: Paul H at September 30, 2009 7:09 PM
Where did you get the idea that I think it would put insurance companies out of business because it would be so good? As usual parroting your leftard talking points. It will put insurance companies out of business by choking them between impossible requirements and an infinite supply of our money.
Why are there more MRI machines in Philadelphia than in Canada? Why? Ponder the question at all? It's because there's a profit to be made from having one, if you're allowed to use it. Nobody pays for their own MRI, I had one this summer. Insurance pays for it. You would have people think insurance companies deny every claim, but they're paying out hella money for MRI's just for an example. If I lived in Canada, the MRI I had this summer would be coming up next year sometime. That's demonstrably inferior, and it's not like I have some kind of gold-plated insurance policy.
Tort reform and interstate insurance companies, to start. Get the government away from what's left, aside from standardization and safety regulations. My mind is quite made up and entirely consistent.
Yes, socialism is a blatant failure, but what you see is not its success, merely the difficulty of getting an entitlement loose from people once they think they deserve it. If we enact this retarded single payer scheme, it'll be hell to pay trying to break loose of it once we see what a disaster it is.
Posted by: Mr Evilwrench at September 30, 2009 7:21 PM
Paul, my apologies on the generalization. Hope you family is and was fine. That said, if San Fran or Berkley or even Detroit were attacked, they would become "Patriotism" central for the neo-cons, the same cities you now regard as "un-American". NYC falls into that same category for many. Further, myslef, I have never advocated for the secession or death of anyone who's ideology differs from my own. I would need more distance between a handful of my own family and some friends.
Posted by: Ghost of Wellstone at September 30, 2009 7:22 PM
Evil, "parrot talking points" much? Elective surgery is what has long waits in Canada, not necessities, ie; implants, plastic surgery etc. Sorry the MRI didn't figure out what was wrong with you...cheap shot, my apologies. I do not wish you harm and illness.
"Where did you get the idea that I think it would put insurance companies out of business because it would be so good? " I actually got that from Chuck Grassley who stated this on the floor. Fox News Bunnies have Parroted it, as well Beck and Hannity. Continuing to allow insurance companies to deny claims based on typos, acne, or a 30 year old bike accident is not helpful to you,me or any of us. For those that go w/o insurance costs every household nearly $1100 a year in premiums, as noted by Rep. Grayson nearly 48,000 people die for little or no care a year. The GOP and Democrats both have a hand in this bs. It is not representing the people, it is representing the corporations. Yet, while all of you argue about "freedom", you never note that SCOTUS gave and continues to give corporations like CIGNA the same protected rights as you and me. There is the fraction of Ron Paul in me.
Posted by: Ghost of Wellstone at September 30, 2009 7:35 PM
Ghost,
Read Mr. Evuilwrench, then I'm sure you'll continue to ignore or evade. After all you are an "intellectual".
Here's another one for ya, you don't seem to jibe with Sowell, this is Mr. Jefferson...
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."
But I'm sure you have a long winded reply of prose for that as well.
Posted by: Angry Fletch at September 30, 2009 8:50 PM
Ghost of Wellstone does it's best to ignore the legion of horror stories for Canada and the UK as well as other socialist utopias. It doesn't fit the story line.
As to helping the troops. I'd like to hear that list. For instance, right now they badly need reinforcements in Afghanistan and Barry is voting Not Present while the troops are dying. Fact: one third of all Afghanistan casualties have occured in 8 months of His Reign. Please don't help them any more. It starts looking more and more like Viet Nam every day.
Posted by: chuck in st paul at September 30, 2009 8:53 PM
Ghost, wake the F up. By the time the Dems get done with "heath care reform", you can bet your last dollar that:
- the insurance companies will walk away with MORE profit than ever before. Much more.
- Unions and all the other related entities that have spent 30-40 years figuring out how to game the system will, as well, walk away with tens of billions in newfound windfall
- Old people will get their benefits cut, and young people will pay up for service they don't want
- Taxpayers will pay and pay and pay and pay, and no one will know where the money has gone, just like with the stimulus package. But basically, it will go to armies of consultants billing the government $150 an hour for new college grads to build new computer systems and all the other detritus of government agency expansion
- At the end of this whole shebang, you, I, and everyone else will get worse care at a much higher cost
To deny any of the above is both to live in an illusion and to not have seen what has been going on for the past 40 years.
They need to kill this entire health care reform fiasco. What needs to be done could easily be summarized on one page, not 1030 pages. Tort reform, interstate competition, and slimmed down rules preventing insurances companies from kicking out customers or denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. There, one paragraph, all done.
Posted by: mega at September 30, 2009 8:58 PM

Succumbing to a paranoia that the government wants to take over your life is pointless. The South Bay is great area to raise kids. I grew up in San Fran @ about the same time you did and I currently live in the Bay Area peninsula. Cupertino and Saratoga are awesome areas that come to mind.
Please don't leave! There has to be at least a remnant of the vocal political minority.
It used to be so nice here when I grew up in the 70's/80's, but now I can't stand going into the Shitty by the Bay!
1 day adventures is about all I can stand. Great to have access to the city w/out having to live there. My father and brother still live there. You have to detonate TNT under 'em to get them to leave the city. Metropolitans through and through.

Goatse has never actually read anything by Jefferson. It's more a case of projection... This is as deep as his thought goes: "Jefferson was a good, smart guy. I am a good smart guy. Thus Jefferson and I must agree politically."
And that's it.
Goatse, let me 'splain this to you. AGAIN. Jefferson was almost fanatically against a large federal government and favored state's rights. He wouldn't just be disgusted at the current crop of statist losers (both Democrat and Republican) we have in Washington right now... he'd be wondering why we haven't rebelled already. The closest modern political movement to Jefferson is libertarianism.
But I've said that before, and you ignored it because it was, well, an inconvenient truth. The Founders would be disgusted with modern liberals like you, Goatse, and your oppressive nanny state.
But hey, let's read what Tom thought.
--------------------------
“A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.”
“Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition.”
“I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion.”
“Our country is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction, to wit: by consolidation of power first, and then corruption, its necessary consequence.”
“I own that I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive.”
“My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.”
Now crawl back under your rock, Goatse.

The present evils of America acc to Goatse:
1. Corporations have the same rights we have. Sorry, but a corporation is a business entity that is nominally a person in its own right to protect the people working there from personal liability. Sonya Sotamayor has already advanced the argument that corporations shouldn't have the right to free speech, so don't worry, Comrade Obama is on the job.
2. We kowtow to insurance companies. I'm not sure who you mean by "we" but insurance is a CONTRACT with the insurance company. If YOU would read your policy, you would notice what is and is not covered before you are denied care. It's called being a responsible consumer.

While I applaud anything to help America's military families, I once again say:
Show me the help to the troops.... the troops, not some peripheral matter.
The guys are getting their asses shot up in Afgoofyland while Barry is trying to out-bribe others at the IOC. He's just now considering the strategy in Afghanistan?? How the hell did he pick his general...?? used a Magic 8-Ball?? The theater general IS the strategy. When he tells you he needs something it's to support the strategy you hired him to execute. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"
-- Thomas Jefferson
"As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives [only] moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion to your walks."
--Thomas Jefferson
"Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."
--Thomas Jefferson
I could go on. Doesn't sound like anything today's Liberals would say.
Jefferson would abhor the ideas and actions of today's Liberals (aka Progressives).

"The trouble with socialism is that you run out of other people's money to spend."
