60,000 to 70,000 Lie Debunked

Statist liars have attempted to belittle the historic March on Washington last weekend by pretending that only 60,000 to 70,000 attended, when the actual figure was easily ten times higher. Their estimate was taken from the clearly partisan bureauweenies in charge of ultra-liberal DC's Fire Department. Since it was the lowest they could find, establishment propagandists ran with it — although it is easily debunked:

[O]ne completely objective source of information is the number of people who rode Metro, Washington, DC's mass transit subway system. Washington Metro measures and releases its ridership numbers and these numbers have been used in the past to judge the size of major events in Washington, DC.
For a fair comparison, we looked at the Saturday after Labor Day in 2008, which is when September 12 fell in 2009. On September 12, 2009, 437,624 rode metro rail. By comparison, on the Saturday after Labor Day in 2008, 202,528 rode. The difference is 235,096. Even if nobody else came to the March, and we know they did by chartered bus and by carpool, the theory that only 70,000 people were there is off by roughly 335% - debunking the 70,000 claim.

Many more wanted to take Metro but couldn't, due to inadequate service. No wonder some want it privatized.

Lies from the governmedia won't hold down patriots.

On tips from Oiao.

Jeez, I was at a Paul Mcartney concert with 60,000-70,000 people.
There were way more than that in DC on 9/12!

Fear not, on Friday, the networks will show us that they can 'cover and count' when the "Islam on Capitol Hill" rally happens. Don't be surprised if the female reporters wear head covers 'out of respect' for Islamic sensibilities.

Posted by: Viking04 at September 20, 2009 12:16 PM

No kidding, Viking04.

No doubt the crowd at the "Kiss Islam's Ass" rally will be estimated at "all the people on earth plus one" by the dregs in the Messiah-Lovin' Media...

Posted by: Fuzzlenutter at September 20, 2009 12:48 PM

As far as Im concerned, this is just a number crunching game. Anyone with an eyeball and a brain cell can see the crowd was well into the high 100's of thousands.

"Islam on Capitol Hill"??? Whats that going to be about?

Posted by: Arch Conservative at September 20, 2009 1:10 PM

If they need to try it over, I'm sure we'll have plenty of reason to show up again.

Posted by: Mr Evilwrench at September 20, 2009 1:12 PM

Someone needs to park a BBQ trailer up wind of the rally and serve up PORK RIBS all day long, since it's starting out at 4or5 in the morning start it out with ham, bacon, sausage and eggs to kick things off.

This makes me so proud to be American. Swallow this, Liberal media. We'll see their "official counts" in the next few days. Their estimate off by 335% and ONLY counting the Metro? It gives us an extend to how much the media will censure the dissent!

Okay. So there was 70,001. But really, who's not counting? And we really don't care how many of you neanderthal nazis marched anyway. What you thugs think is non-consequential.

Liberal fun fact : They would openly embrace and help a religion that has declared war on America and ignore actual, legal citizens exercising their first amendments.

LGF ran a thread a few days ago comparing 9/12/09 to a year ago - 9/12/08 - which demonstrated that there was a 70,000 increase over last year, thus proving the MSM's 70k estimate. What LGF sneakily failed to mention is that 9/12/08 was a Friday, i.e. a day when commuters are packing into the metros to get into work. LOL. Talk about the total systematic collapse of a blog.

DC is a ghost town on the weekends with virtually empty metro stations. A half million people taking metro on a Saturday is huge. DC is not like NY or SF or Chicago. When the weekend comes, people are tending their lawns in the suburbs.

And the metro #'s do not even begin to address the facts that (a) busses were streaming into DC by the truckload, (b) 4 million people live like me within easy driving distance.

I don't know how anyone bought the MSM's lie of the 70k when it is so obvious by the pictures and accounts that you'd have to add a zero to that even to be in the ballpark.

Posted by: mega at September 20, 2009 4:56 PM

As Obama and his cronies (includes the media) are pretending the march never happened, the number of participants doesn't matter. What is indelible in history is that on Sept 12, 2009 the PEOPLE march in protest of the irresponsible actions of our government. Obamas attempts to make this a none event will only assure that more demonstrations will follow.

Posted by: czekmark at September 20, 2009 5:11 PM

Mega -

Good points. I know when I over-weekend in D.C. on business, it is dead. Everyone is at the bars in Georgetown.

Even a busy normal weekend, where you 'might' have to wait 10 minutes to get into the Air and Space Museum, the Mall is dead.

If I'm in D.C. and even see 1/4 of the people that turned up on 9/12, on or near the Mall, I head down to Quantico or Fredericksburg, or over to Annapolis for my R&R.

Just came here to say that it would be awfully ironic as well as satisfyingly fitting if "Swine Flu" infected all the muslims during "Islam on Capitol Hill" day.

@ Pigs....

If there was such a thing as Goat Flu right now, I'd put money on that ironic thinking....

OT - Just watching NY/Dallas football. They just had a shot of John Madden sitting with George Bush.

I wonder what kind of conspiracy theory will come of this - particularly with the Silly Ogglerman participating in the NBC halftime show (which I won'[t watch just because he's part of it).

The following panorama shot has been cited by the right as proof that the mainstream media estimates of 60 to 70 thousand people at the 9/12 march are completely bogus.

http://iowntheworld.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/capitol-view-lo-res.jpg

Calling up a Google map of this area might help in spotting streets and landmarks.

What does the panorama actually show? The back of the main body of the crowd is at 3rd St. where two blue buses can be seen. These are easily visible in the center of this crowd picture:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2633/3914299074_28fdec29a2_b.jpg

Traffic is also visible on this road. From that point back to the white tents near the Washington Monument is lots of empty green grass. The white tents were part of another event and people back there had no connection to the 9/12 demonstration. Similarly, in the panorama, the crowd can be seen ending at 3rd Street on both Maryland Ave and Pennsylvania Ave. The sides of the crowd were in the park areas between those two avenues and Independence Ave and Constitution Ave.

The main body of the crowd occupied park areas within Capitol Circle. Not completely though. Green fences can be seen restraining the crowd above the words "prevail" and "to set brush" in the panorama quote. The walkways towards the capitol were also kept clear and the clear path towards Garfield Circle is visible. Lots of cars can be seen parked on Maryland Ave, between the Capitol and 3rd St., and I presume the same was true for Pennsylvania Ave. Above the trees in front of the Museum for the American Indian, lots of green grass is visible. Above the words "keen to" a large space of pavement near Peace Circle is visible. All of this shows that the crowd did not "fill" this entire area.

According to my calculations from the scale on Google maps, the distance from Independence Ave to Constitution Ave is about 1650 feet and the distance from the curved edge of the pavement at the capitol to 3rd St. is about 1250 feet. Within that area is the reflecting pool which is about 350 x 800 feet.

1650 x 1250 = 2,062,500 square feet less 280,000 square feet for the reflecting pool = 1,782,500 square feet. We also need to take out about 102,400 square feet for the Botanical Garden which leaves 1,680,100 square feet. From that we also need to remove a significant amount of space for trees, statues, hedges, gardens, open paths, fenced off areas etc. Let's simplify and assume we have 1,600,000 square feet of "demonstrator space". To get this number I have removed 22,300 square feet less than the area of the Botanical Garden. Given some of the constraints already mentioned, I think I am being very generous.

Some people say we should assume 6 square feet per person in the crowd. Bear in mind, that would be a 2.45 foot square for every person in the crowd.

6 square feet per person gives a crowd of 266,666 people and that would be the very highest end estimate. But, is 6 square feet per person reasonable?

Look at pictures and videos from within the demonstration itself, here:

http://novatownhall.com/2009/09/13/photos-of-9-12-project-tea-party-demonstration-in-washington-dc-september-12-2009/

What do we see? Lots and lots of empty pavement space, and lots of people taking up room with their big signs and flags. People are constantly shown, within the demonstration area, easily moving around. They are nowhere near as packed in as the fans in this stadium picture of 100,000+ people.

http://pennstategameday.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/PennState-BeaverStadium.jpg

At about 3:18 in the second video we see that the police have cordoned off a large pavement area near the Peace Circle that I noted above. I presume it was the same over at Garfield Circle. Once again, we see that assuming the outlined area is packed with people is in error.

This short video shows the crowd density from the reflecting pool to 3rd St.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO4aoXG4vXs

People have actually laid out blankets. Obviously, calculating 6 square feet per person within the demonstration area presumes a crowd density which simply did not exist.

What do we get if we allow 24 square feet per person? That would mean a 4.9 foot square per person which seems pretty reasonable given those crowd pictures.

24 square feet per person gives us 66,666 people. That's within the estimated range that most media have adopted.

20 square feet per person (a 4.47 foot square) = 80,000.

16 square feet per person (a 4 foot square) = 100,000.

Oh, and by the way, how much personal space would 1,000,000 demonstrators have had in that area? 1.6 square feet - a 1.26 foot square.

And lastly, if you'd really like to see what a big crowd in that area looks like, try here:

The shadow government and the elitists know we’re on to their game. And we’re not backing down. Our founding fathers risked life, family and property. They were called names. They were threatened with murder and their families lives were in danger, all in the name of freedom for the precious Constitution. The greatest document outside of the Bible that was ever written.

We have a moral imperative as a nation to get off the couch and create change. We patriot taxpayers have to continue to stay on the course and continue to call, write, and stage peaceful demonstrations. You cannot let their snotty assed comments and crocodile tears dissuade you. Keep moving forward. I’ve had it with the elitists in WDC thumbing their noses down at us like we’re all stupid.

I plan on helping my local candidates in my area next year. If that means I will have a garage sale or a lemonade stand to raise money, I will do that.

The alternative is doing nothing and one morning waking up and realizing you’re a zombie with no rights. A zombie who just punches a clock, willingly handing money to a government that despises us and would love nothing more than to crush our spirit.

I’ll be dead before they crush mine.

Ask yourself, are you a zombie or a Patriot?

Posted by: SurferChick at September 20, 2009 6:32 PM

"Our founding fathers risked life, family and property."

They did walk the walk. What many people don't realize is that many of the men who signed The Declaration of Independance ended up impoverished or killed for their beliefs.

Lao,

1. You obviously did not properly read and consider the original post
2. You're clearly afraid. What motivation could you possibly have to be concerned about numbers? (and don't say it's the truth, because if you believe that, refer to point 1)

Posted by: Stephan at September 20, 2009 8:15 PM

If "point 1" means 235,000 extra people on the metro, bear this in mind. Metro figures include going and coming. So you can half your number to 117,500 right off the bat.

Next, consider those white tents at the other end of the mall by the Washington monument. That was a completely different event, the 24th annual Black Family Reunion which ran from 7th St. to the Washington monument.

What do you think? Do you suppose some of those people used Metro?

Posted by: Lao at September 20, 2009 8:32 PM

Lao,

From what I've seen in Baltimore, NYC and D.C. Metro, sure they rode the Metro, but they all jumped over so as not to pay.

Posted by: Oiao at September 20, 2009 8:37 PM

Lao,

By you're own admission then your estimate is ridiculously low.

Posted by: Stephan at September 20, 2009 8:57 PM

Lao, ridership does not count ons and offs, it is based on tickets sold, and I don't think the 24th Annual Black Reunion was a major contributor to this event, because you'd expect a lot more black faces in the crowd if that were the case.

Posted by: Judith M. at September 20, 2009 9:02 PM

Stephan...Judith... There's no way to tell how many people rode the Metro to attend the 9/12 rally vs those who rode to attend the Black Family Reunion.

My point was, 9/12 was not the only event happening that day, there were two events, one at each end of the mall.

And my point is, Lao, that the leftists have pointed out that there weren't very many black faces in the tea party crowd (which means somethng given that Washington DC has a high resident black population). QED, all the white faces had to have been imported (and they probably were not coming to attend the 24th Annual Black Family Reunion).
