Big Government Cracks Down on Secondhand Sales

Add garage sales and church bazaars to the list of American traditions moonbattery will kill:

If you're planning a garage sale or organizing a church bazaar, you'd best beware: You could be breaking a new federal law. As part of a campaign called Resale Roundup, the federal government is cracking down on the secondhand sales of dangerous and defective products.
The initiative, which targets toys and other products for children, enforces a new provision that makes it a crime to resell anything that's been recalled by its manufacturer. …
Secondhand sellers now must keep abreast of recalls for thousands of products, some of them stretching back more than a decade, to stay within the bounds of the law.

Rather than invest hours researching whether each item they don't need has been deemed hazardous by the pushy lawyers who rule us, most people will just throw the stuff in the trash. This will also help smother Goodwill and Salvation Army stores, not to mention eBay.

But think of how safe we'll all be!

On a tip from Tony I.

Ebay's already pretty diligent about filtering out that kind of stuff and it's always been against their rules, but I'm glad I got my set of Jarts at a garage sale already :)

The agency [supposedly] in charge of all this is still trying to figure just what the heck it is meant to cover and what it ought not.

A few weeks back, reading about banning books for fear of lead (found in old inks, binding glue, etc), I tried to follow this agency's late-July publication. It said libraries need not worry because they were merely distributing not selling - but two paragraphs later stated that distributing rather than selling (presumably eg food-prep pamphlets or Gideon Bibles) did not mean exemption.

Good for you, Evilwrench! I love those old fashioned ones and hate the new ones. Friends of ours have the old ones so I'm in luck, too.

This is the stupidest law and it was invented by one Henry Waxman. It harms poor people the most. Who can afford all new baby clothes all the time cause the kids grow so fast? I wrote him a nasty letter about it, but he didn't read it.
How can they possibly enforce this through all little corners of our huge country?

Karin -- why, with the Civilian National Security Force they will enforce this! YAY!!!

some of those "recalled" toys become collectibles and worth big $$$ to obsessive collectors.

one of the recalled toys was a Barbie set if I remember right..in 10 years, how much will an unopened one of those be worth to a collector?

no kid will ever play with it. no one will ever be in any danger from the lead paint or whatever.

of course, now this is like storing unregistered machine guns in my basement. the kinderstormengruppen will come and put a boot to the back of my neck.

"President Barack Obama and Democratic congressional leaders are crafting an appropriations bill that would boost the agency's funding next year by more than 11.4 percent — to $117 million — and it's already hiring new inspectors and other employees in anticipation of the funding infusion."

It's just a way for them to create more jobs for their lazy ass ACORN thugs and their baby momma.

In other words, it'll be like giving ACORN scumbags a license to steal your private property.

Not THAT is going to get interesting I think. ALL the people I personally know who are in love with yard sales... are moonbats~! Whatta they gonna do when their beloved Mr.O actually passed this?

It is time that America wakes up and puts a stop to this autocracy. I don't know what the answer is, but maybe it is time for a 3rd party - a truly constitutional party.

The real object of this and a host of other confusing, contradictory, and unenforcable laws is to create a nation of "criminals". When everyone has done something they could be prosecuted for, then no one will draw attention to himself by speaking out or running for public office. Pot smokers have understood this for years.

I wonder if the dildo recyclers from a few threads down is breaking a federal law by dealing with infected rubber?

I bought a "toy" from a private individual through an Austin Newspaper ad a few months back... It came packed with lead. :-)

At least until the Trash Police come calling like they do in Britain.

Our community has a anniual yard sale event every first saturday in june here in the STATE OF JEFFERSON we dont want OBAMA and BIG BROTHER sticking their fat snouts into our sales with stupid regulations from the DISTRICT of CRINIMALS

The quoted post specifically states that they have no intention of going after yard sales, churches, etc. It also points out that the law in question was signed by your precious President Bush.

Of course I realize that the voices in your heads are a lot more persuasive than the actual article you're basing this on in the first place, but please try and come back to reality.

Posted by: rofl at August 21, 2009 11:58 PM

'scuse me, "article quoted in the post" that is.

Posted by: rofl at August 21, 2009 11:59 PM

First off, (we have to keep telling you trolls) Bush wasn't as precious to us as you seem to think. He was just much better than the alternatives. Second, that doesn't mean this isn't moonbattery at its finest. There's been plenty of that all along. Are they going after yard sales, churches, etc? Was that just hyperbole to bring attention to the article? Post Turtle is raising their budget; they'll probably be looking for something to do, besides, these guys are government bureaucrats. Trust what they say at your peril. It's not voices in my head tellin me that.

Posted by: Mr Evilwrench at August 22, 2009 5:47 AM

But of COURSE they need to crack down on garage sales and church sales, as well as attempting to strangle Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and others: the only source of 'assistance' for the plebes MUST be the Government!

Time for torches and pitchforks. These assholes need to be wiped.

Posted by: grayjohn at August 22, 2009 6:32 PM

Plus, rofl, the bill was veto-proof. What choice did he have?
