The Downside of Apollo 11

A lot of airtime has been appropriately devoted to the historic accomplishment of 40 years ago, when Americans became the first to walk on the moon. What could be more symbolic of the greatness of a country that believes in itself and strives to overcome all challenges, rather than wallowing in victim mentality and self-recrimination?

Unfortunately, there was one downside to this giant leap for mankind. As arguably the biggest news story in our planet's history, it drowned out coverage of a degenerate Senator who killed a young girl.

On July 18, 1969, two days before Apollo 11 touched down on the moon, an evidently drunken Ted Kennedy drove his mom's Olds 88 into the drink, leaving young Mary Jo Kopechne inside to drown. Though he had ample opportunity to pull her from the car, and to call emergency services, he did not report the incident until the next day, after he had a chance to talk with his lawyer and friends about how to deal with Mary Jo's inconvenient corpse.

Meanwhile, fishermen had discovered the submerged Oldsmobile. A diver was called, who found the dead girl's body in a spot where an air bubble would have formed. He concluded:

Had I received a call within five to ten minutes of the accident occurring, and was able, as I was the following morning, to be at the victim's side within twenty-five minutes of receiving the call, in such event there is a strong possibility that she would have been alive on removal from the submerged car.

In short, the sleazy Senator was clearly guilty of manslaughter. Given the media attention you would expect from such a sensational case, this should have been enough to end his political career, even in Massachusetts. But possibly due in part to the excitement of Apollo 11, the appalling incident never sufficiently penetrated the public consciousness. The drunken, irresponsible, self-centered killer went on to become what his fellow moonbats sometimes describe as "The Conscience of the Senate."

Comments

MA has a high standard for second degree murder, but this sounds like more than manslaughter to me.

1. reckless conduct that was criminal (drunk driving)
2. depraved indifference to the fate of the victim
3. aggravating circumstances including failing to report the incident and leaving the scene of the "accident". Or did he stick around for a while?

Three words:

Despicable

Despicable

Despicable

(referring of course to the insipid people of Massachusetts who actually continue to vote Chappaquiddick Ted into office term after term)

I agree it is a national shame that Ted Kennedy's career did not end then and there. But even though I was a boy, I remember Chap. got a lot of attention. (But maybe I remember it that way because my mom hated Ted Kennedy and paid a lot of attention to this.)

I suspect he got away with it simply because he's an effing Kennedy.

CHAPPAQUIDDICK
(to the dulce tune of Oklahoma)

Oh, oh, oh Cha a a ppaquiddick,
It’s the place I dump ‘em when I’m through.
As they gasp and drown,
Lookin’ for another girl to screw!

Oh, oh, oh Cha a a ppaquiddick,
It’s a shame that anyone found out.
First I tried to hide,
And then I lied,
But now it’s time for me to shout,

That I won’t have to fear a penalty,
Not as long as my name is Kennedy!

So when I say, ay, ay,
My brother’s JFK,
I only know that I’ll get a pass from the liiiberals,
They still think I’m – OK!

They are all eliteists. It's the way they were raised.

And, don't forget that Kennedy cousin, Michael Skakel, who beat Martha Moxley to death with a golf club. He ran around free for something like 20 years.
I feel like carving Mass right out of the union. I dont' want to associate with them anymore.

Don't we have a troll here named ILOVETEDKENNEDY?

RE: Posted by: Morris at July 20, 2009 9:09 AM

Funny song parody, Morris.

Keep in mind that there is no evidence that Mary Jo Kopechne was "intimately involved" with Teddy Kennedy. Although she made some bad political and social choices, and eventually it got her killed, she was apparently not doing the wild thang with that drunken jackass, and was actually said te be repulsed by him. Can't imagine why.....

Ted always reminds me of the 1980's commercial, "This Is Not Your Father's Oldsmobile". Yeah, and it ain't a submarine either, Ted.......

Memory is partially erased by time, but I recall that at Harvard he was caught cheating in exams. Is that so?
If so, a small thing to weigh against the Mary Jo business, but indicative of some flaw in character?
Then there is his drinking.
He has the appearance, taken over a long time, of someone plagued with guilt. In his ratty judgment he supported Obama thinking that it will get him into the history books as the clincher in a great step forward for racial equality.

Don't forget young Joe kennedy who was drunk while driving a jeep and crippled his passenger. Then there is the Smith cousin who raped a girl. Nice family. I am from MA and I do not know how he keeps getting elected, except that no one really challenges him. Romney came close one time, but there are not enough repubs here. Don't forget, we have 129 colleges in the Boston Metro area filled with out of state students who love to vote their liberal agendas here in MA

If you read the case carefully, Mary Jo did NOT drown, she asphyxiated from lack of oxygen in the air bubble and this probably took 2 to 6 hours leaving plenty of time for Kennedy to have summoned help and saved her life. I was a police officer in NC for 30 years and a homicide detective for 8 years and according to the law in our state which mirrors many others, Kennedy would have been guilty of 2nd Degree Murder due to the carelessness and recklessness of his actions and his failure to render aid. I have a lot of trouble feeling sorry for the "Lion of the Senate" over his illness when he left a defenseless girl to die in terror because he did not have enough courage to call for help.

What's worse, David, is that he will be lionized upon his death, his memory will live on pumped up by the liberal establishment and Gov't Run Media. Nary a discouraging word will pass their lips as they sing his praises. I suppose he will meet his Maker and, well, who are we to say how that engagement will go?

Like Mary Jo and Martha, huh?

When he kicks the bucket, I am turning off the TV. Or at least catch up on my DVR list. Look at that awful MJ spectacle. I'm not putting up with it for the murderous swimmer.

How this "man" sleeps at night, I'll never know. I hope that incident still haunts him every night as he lays down to go to sleep in his drunken stupors. But something tells me he was able to put it out of his mind a long time ago. At least it kept him out of the presidency. He was smart enough to figure out even Americans wouldn't elect a killer and a coward.
