I watched a show on BOOK TV (a CSPAN program on authors and their new books) that originally aired in October 2006, when Gates was promoting the African Encyclopedia that he edited, "Africana," and he used these same lines in that talk as well. He denigrated Clarence Thomas more than once in that talk. Any African-American who has ideas independent of the victimhood of his race is vilified. Please keep digging on this man- he has made a very rich living exploiting his own race.

That has to be one the dumbest things I have ever heard. We have African-American men serving years on drug charges that are ludicrous. That is hardly because of the Teachers Union and public schools. Some of these sentences were handed down by white judges, after the men were profiled by police. The thing you fail; to recognize, is our country has far too many Joe Arpaios in law enforcement.

As far as black men in jail on drug charges, that was what they turned to to make money. The public school system does not prepare you black males for the real life. They don't teach the alternative to making it out in the real world. These kids learn survival from the streets.

I will agree with you on one thing the drug charges are stupid. If they were involving fire arms it would be different. Don't forget that the reason there are so many blacks in jail here it's because they are the majority in the citizenship in Memphis. What if it were the other way around? Then there would be a lot of whites in jail. Think about the situation down here and maybe you will get a better grasp of the problem.

Some are there because they hardened criminals. some faced drug charges, of say a bag of pot and get 10 years, whereas you or I may not get anything. "Think about the situation down here"? Ted you have to recognize that a number of drug charges are not for being under the influence, but being in possession. Take Cambridge for instance, I drive across town for marijuana for personel use. There and back I am never stopped in a later model Volvo. A black man makes the same drive for the same purpose in his 1990 Buick Skylark. What are the odds he gets stopped? Pretty damn good! And then he is getting 10 years .

You fail to realize that when this type of punishment is proposed, they argue that it is slave labor and, because of this, play the race card. Therefore, we bypass this problem by locking the thugs up.

Plus, these thugs don't give two shits about the community. Why have a punishment that is only half-effective? Putting them in prison takes the scum off the streets and, in simple theory, lowers crime.

Unfortunately, these thugtards get back out... and commit more crime because they still have yet to fear the law, like any normal and productive citizen does (at least they should, it's called deterrence).

American to the Core, I agree to an extent. Taking criminals off our streets is a good thing, but making criminals out of somebody smoking pot vs someone dealing it to teens is a different story. In Detroit we have the famous Woodward Dream Cruise, in a 1976 Volvo I was stopped on suspicion of drug posession, was I profiled? Who knows, but I do recognize the nonsense in Metro Detroit. You are young, you have acknowledged that, so you do not know what cities like Memphis or Detroit face in taxes or profiling. Dave and I are worlds apart on ideology, but obviously can see what minorities face in our own communities. We are wasting money, we are wasting time on people who are not actually criminals

It's hard to argue profiling is "wrong" when statistics show that not only do minorities, for being a small chunk of the population, commit more crimes (and more violent ones at that)... but often times, in these "profiling" instances, they find criminal activity is a-foot.

Would I mind if they profiled me? Of course I'd get pissed off, but only to some extent. I realize what their job is and I accept the fact that they are working, in their best efforts, for the American people as a whole. Everybody, nowadays, turns all this nonsense into a personal issue when they get stopped, when they should be looking at the situation as a whole, towards a greater good.

Libtards (minorities are primarily liberals), always say "me me me" when it should be "us us us." They create this divide by arguing that they have been selected for who they are but don't realize the process going on, in the long run, eradicates and points out more criminals than if they only stopped people DURING the commission of a crime. Why should we wait until people are COMMITTING a crime when we could nip it in the butt early on by taking their filth off their street, prior to them damaging society?

Apparently you don't understand random screenings. At that point, it is no longer profiling because it has a random element (no discrimination).
