Pork at $595,600 per Pound

It would be hard to imagine a more symbolic example of the extravagantly expensive pork our rulers have been forcing us to pay for under the guise of "stimulus." Here's a $1,191,200 payout for two pounds of ham:

stimulus-ham.jpg

With stimulus ham at $595,600/pound, it's a good thing taxpayers have plenty of money.

This is probably an error, coming as it does from a government website. Won't it be exciting to have these boobs in charge of your family's healthcare?

On tips from BURNING HOT and Conan. Hat tip: Gateway Pundit.

Update

Maybe it's not an error. More, via Drudge:

RECOVERY.GOV // AWARDED: $2,531,600 FOR 'HAM, WATER ADDED, COOKED, FROZEN, SLICED, 2-LB'…
RECOVERY.GOV // AWARDED: $351,807 FOR 'REPLACE AND UPGRADE THE DUMBWAITER'…
RECOVERY.GOV // AWARDED: $1,562,568 FOR 'MOZZARELLA CHEESE'…
RECOVERY.GOV // AWARDED: $5,708,260 FOR 'PROCESS CHEESE'…
RECOVERY.GOV // AWARDED: $16,784,272 FOR 'CANNED PORK'…
RECOVERY.GOV // AWARDED: $1,444,100 FOR 'REPAIR DOOR BLDG 5112'…
RECOVERY.GOV // AWARDED: $541,119 FOR 'INSTALL TRAFFIC SIGNAL'…

The Obamination Administration has put off releasing a budget update. Maybe our rulers are worried about our torches and pitchforks after all. They have certainly been pushing the limits of what any population would tolerate.

I can add nothing here. I just want the government-worshiping Liberals to tells us what they think of this.

A mistake? Hey, I have an idea. The State should pay one of Steny Hoyer's friends $18 million to re-work the Wreckovery.gov website.

Oh, wait, they're already doing that:

$18 million for fixing up a website is pretty good work if you can get it.

If you go to Gateway Pundit, there's more info. It was actually a certain quantity of 2-lb. packages. Quantity itself not 100% sure of. But, the contract went to an Obama supporter (Hormel) who did heavy fundraising for zero. The competing bidder had voted Republican at some point in the past. Also, it appears they are counting regular gov't expenditures as stimulus projects. Thuggery and trickery, in one neat package!

I just hope that the ham that had this astronomically high price tag was the best in the world and was the key ingredient behind immortality. If not, it was an absolute waste.

Besides this, I'm at a complete loss for words.

Hmmm. Paying double what the freemarket is asking? And they want us to believe giving them control over our health care system will SAVE us money? Bwahahahahahahaha!

I went over to Drudge and watched a Youtube of a townhall meeting of some congressperson. It erupted from angry questions about the birth cert. 1,457 comments followed; about 20% from Obots, the rest not Obots.

The G'vmnt is trying to make this all go down the memory hole.

Sometime between 2PM EDT and 5PM EDT, the notation that the payment was made for 2 lb ham, frozen was removed from the G'vmnt website.

The Great American Wimp will do nothing.

Update: $1,191,200 was for 760,000 pounds of ham - at twice the normal price

The references to "2 pound frozen ham sliced" are to the sizes of the packaging. Press reports suggesting that the Recovery Act spent $1.191 million to buy "2 pounds of ham" are wrong. In fact, the contract in question purchased 760,000 pounds of ham for $1.191m, at a cost of approximately $1.50 per pound. In terms of the dairy purchase referenced, USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) purchased 837,936 pounds of mozzarella cheese and 4,039,200 pounds of processed cheese.

Slice ham costs $.79 per pound at Food Lion.

GREEN EGGS AND HAM A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE FOR SAM I AM

Posted by: Flu-Bird at July 20, 2009 9:15 PM

This kinda reminds me of the $600 toilet seat that NASA paid for all those years ago. A few ideas:
1) the contract in question purchased 760,000 pounds of ham for $1.2M, at a cost of approximately $1.50 per pound, as stated above.
OR
2)the money had to look like it was spent or maybe they wouldn't get any more in the future, similar to other organizations that are Federally funded.
OR
3) the money was spent on something else entirely but had to be accounted for somewhere on paper and the Gov't thought nobody would notice how expensive ham has become.

Who gets to eat this gubment ham? Will I be getting a 2 pound ham in the mail?

Posted by: Anonymous at July 21, 2009 5:03 AM

The ham and all the other "commodities" will be given out at your local food giveaway, or will be used for school lunches.

Government cheese (the "process" kind) is nothing but Velveeta in 2.5 pound blocks, and more expensive then what you get in the store.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!!!!!!!!!!

That's some expensive pork. And I thought the gub'mint's $1000 hammer was a rape of the taxpayers.
