I've been to a couple of these events, and the people seem pretty normal.

As for thinking they are "smarter than the people that actually run things": do you really think we should just accept the decisions of our superiors? They have shown themselves to be incapable of making prudent decisions - especially with money. The deficits were big when Bush was there, now they have quadrupled. It is definitely a real cause, and if you can't see that, you're an idiot. Spending trillions of dollars you don't have will lead to serious problems.
