Newsweek Dismisses Danger of Gitmo Terrorists on the Loose

Are you concerned that for the sake of Comrade Obama's sanctimonious posturing, deadly terrorists will be released from Club Gitmo to inflict future 9/11-style atrocities on the innocent? Relax. It's true that Gitmo alumni tend to return to terrorism after being released. But our intellectual superiors among the liberal elite assure us that the real problem is that too many criminals are incarcerated. From Newsreek:

If we are going to have a national panic attack about the failings of the criminal justice system after 9/11, let's be honest that the dangers of a handful of Guantánamo prisoners rejoining the battlefield is far more remote than the dangers festering in our own jails and prisons. Americans worried about what's happening in their own backyards would be well advised to recognize that the U.S. prison system is one burgeoning backyard that won't be contained, ignored or walled off forever.

We certainly don't want our prisons walled off, do we?

Incidentally, the problem of what to do with Gitmo detainees has been solved by a guy named Hiram Maxim:

As the old saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished".

The Guantánamo detainees are only a problem because they exist - if it were not for the compassion, fairness and military restraint that is almost uniquely American, a lot of these men would have simply been shot.

As Stalin once said, "Death solves all problems - no man, no problem".

We don't do things that way, and that's a good thing. Gitmo needs to stay open.

[BZZZT!] I'm sorry, the correct answer is "George Westinghouse".

According to the rules of war and nations, at least half of those prisoners should have been shot after capture.

Presidents generally have food tasters, and yes, Bush had one too, Bush even had people who would collect his feces after he was done. As far as escaped prisoners, the US has low rate of escapees, and we need to look no further than Colorado. It's ironic to see such "pro-America" and patriotic folks like yourselves have such little confidence in our own justice system. What a bunch of tiny little whiny men some of you are. "Oh my God! A food taster?!" It is common among leaders of countries. Further, some these leaders are helping with the Gitmo nonsense by taking some prisoners.

Easy. Throw a tent over each prison, then fumigate like a house. Problem solved. It’s not like a bunch of sonnets won’t get written.

It's ironic to see such "pro-America" and patriotic folks like yourselves have such little confidence in our own justice system.

We have zero confidence in the criminal justice system, and frankly that’s because it’s infested with liberals who share your views. Anyone convicted of first-degree murder should be executed within a year, as was the practice in Victorian times. I happened to read about Wild Bill Hickok last night. Murdered August 2, 1876; his killer, Jack McCall, was hanged March 1, 1877. That’s what I’m talking about.

Further, some these leaders are helping with the Gitmo nonsense by taking some prisoners.

Correction: taking one prisoner. One effing prisoner. Thanks for the help!

Posted by: Jay Guevara at June 7, 2009 4:09 PM

Just for clarity, it was Edison, not Westinghouse.

Edison developed the electric chair to scare people away from "dangerous" AC current. Edison's work was all with DC.

It's also no at all common (or heard of before) for an American President to have a food taster. That is a job for people in leftist countries run by dictators.

It's particularly odd considering he was in France. I might have some issues with French politics, but I hardly think that they are going to poison the President.

Looking on the bright side of a lousy situation, any terrorists that end up getting released are most likely to hit a liberal-infested area (NY, DC, SF, LA, Seattle, Chicago). Since they'll be the people most responsible for turning terrorists loose, that seems only fitting. If someone should suffer from their stupidity, it's only right that it be them.

And if a terrorist that Obama released from Gitmo is involved, even liberal moonbats will be hard-pressed to blame Bush. Not that they won't try.

Comrade, read the Geneva Protocols. Anyone captured out of uniform is a spy/saboteur, and subject to summary execution. So they're hardly innocent.

But to answer your question, yes, at the margin, I'd execute every mother-lovin' one of 'em. But let's compromise: I agree to let them go, if they agree only to kill liberals, and no Americans. Then I'd encourage them to kill as many as possible. Deal?

Tell us, Robert - do you deny the Holocaust, also? Would you have been one of the “innocent Germans” who “ignorantly” stood by while old men, women, and babies were being shipped in railroad cattle cars to the gas chambers? I'm sure you would.

OH! But the Obama-führer would NEVER do that, huh? No - of course not! Killing babies and keeping people of color in the “cast” system so they are permanently indebted to you, doesn’t bother you a bit, huh? Tell us what the difference is, Robert.

How is your beloved Obama-führer better (or different) than the German’s führer? Both require absolute devotion – such as you give. Hitler made it illegal to disagree with, or speak against him – just as you want for your little brown god.

How are you better than a Nazi, Robert? How about you Whalesperm? How are you better than a Nazi? Fez/HLF/Dino; how are you better than a Nazi? You all want to murder anyone who believes in God, or are too young or too old to defend themselves – what makes you better than Hilter and his murderers?

I don’t believe that Obama-nazis are any different. You all march to the Obama-führer without question. You will worship him all the way to hell.

Now – go call the FBI and accuse me of threatening you. THAT is the Nazi way, is it not? People like me who consider you and your little brown god worthless should be silenced, huh?

Silence me, jerks.

"It's ironic to see such "pro-America" and patriotic folks like yourselves have such little confidence in our own justice system."
We have little confidence in our justice system because it is rapidly becoming overtaken by wussy leftists who are more concerned with preserving the civil rights of murderers and rapists than with ensuring justice is served for the sake of their victims' families and ensuring such crimes do not happen again. Ultra- liberals tend to care much more about criminals than about their victims.
To quote Batman Begins (Which I think can be seen as an indictment of the effects of liberalism on our justice system), "Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding."
For just one example, consider the Denver church shooting in December of 2007. After it happened, the members of the ultra- left web forum Democratic Underground made a multitude of threads discussing it, almost all of which had them showing A LOT more sympathy for the killer (Especially when it was revealed that he was gay) than for his victims (Whom the DU posters portrayed as evil, intolerant "Fundies" who got what they deserved), and portrayed the brave church security guard who risked her own life to stop his rampage as a vicious, bloodthirsty lunatic!
Do you want those kinds of people in charge of our courts?

Posted by: Adam at June 8, 2009 7:05 AM

Posted by: Karin at June 8, 2009 8:46 AM

What rulings has Democratic Underground ever had any say on? Further, who DU is in the running to be a judge? The point with GITMO, is these men have not been charged with anything! Some are guilty as sin, and some are innocent. In both cases, they should be given due process and either sentenced and released. And to say the courts are being taken over by "wussy leftists", umm, the right has been whining about judges for 50 years, and you guys have spent more time in charge than the left.

Yappy yappy do! I'm a stupid fool! All I do is drool! Yappy do do do!

Posted by: Ghost of Wellstone at June 8, 2009 10:11 AM

The point with GITMO, is these men have not been charged with anything! Some are guilty as sin, and some are innocent. In both cases, they should be given due process and either sentenced and released.

Nonsense. They’ve evaluated by a military tribunal consisting of three officers, or they wouldn’t be in Gitmo now. In the war context, that’s due process. Furthermore, please note that Constitution affords Constitutional protections to ...American citizens and legal residents. It affords zero protection to foreign nationals on foreign soil. Surely that’s obvious.

Foreign nationals outside the U.S. are no more afforded the protection of American law than they are subject to it. Which is why on one hand they don’t pay taxes, for example, and on the other have no protection from the Constitution.

It’s also why establishing Gitmo was brilliant. Zero chance of escape (the choice: crossing minefields to enter communist Cuba or take a 100 mile dip in shark-infested waters), and it’s leased from Cuba – not part of the U.S., and so remain outside the U.S. Perfect. Please note that despite the Messiah’s campaign promises and His recent posturing, Gitmo remains open for business. Care to bet that He’ll find some excuse move back the closure date by next January? You’ve been conned, comrade.

And to say the courts are being taken over by "wussy leftists", umm, the right has been whining about judges for 50 years, and you guys have spent more time in charge than the left.

More nonsense. Evidence? And furthermore, please note that Federal judges are appointed for life, or until they’re impeached and convicted, as Alcee Hastings was (he’s now a proud member of the Democratic caucus – color me surprised). The comings and goings of judges is not related to the electoral cycle. We’re still working off the toxic legacy of Carter, for example.

In any case, please note how long it takes to, e.g., carry out a death sentence. Should be done within a year, but commonly decades pass, vitiating the point of the whole exercise. That’s an example of wussy leftists in action/inaction. Ask yourself this question: how much crime exists in Singapore, and why?

Posted by: Jay Guevara at June 8, 2009 10:26 AM

Jay, back in March, Lawrence Wilkerson suggested that out of the 800 detainees that have through Gitmo, only about a dozen have been actual terrorists. 61 of them released by the Bush Admin. became terrorists after Gitmo. What does that tell you? There is now 240 there, and you have officials in both Michigan and Montana who are willing to jail them, and both states have pretty good records on escapes. You have no regard for human rights, and buy into this GOP propaganda that we are going to house terror suspects on your block or get them a Condo, Gimme a break! In addition, you have Chinese Muslims were declared innocent and still remain at GITMO, what should we do with them? Execute?

Posted by: Ghost of Wellstone at June 8, 2009 10:58 AM

Jay, back in March, Lawrence Wilkerson suggested that out of the 800 detainees that have through Gitmo, only about a dozen have been actual terrorists. 61 of them released by the Bush Admin. became terrorists after Gitmo. What does that tell you?

It tells me that we shouldn’t have released the 61. Now if instead of catch and release we’d hanged them, as I propose, we wouldn’t have had this problem. And I couldn’t care less what Wilkerson thinks. He’s a modern day Ramsey Clark, and has been mumbling leftist talking points for years.

Ghost, you don’t get it, and apparently don’t see the problem. Once they’re in the US, they’re subject to American legal protections as accused criminals, rather than as illegal combatants – which is what they are. Your argument about the record on prison escapes is beside the point. On what basis would these terrorists be imprisoned? It is illegal to hold someone in the US without trial, and yet the battlefield conditions under which these terrorists were captured do not lend themselves to criminal investigation, and so prosecuting them criminally would be difficult to impossible. (You can hardly cordon off an active battlefield with crime scene tape and go over it inch by inch for evidence.)

So what happens if – as it almost inevitable, for the reasons pointed above – they’re acquitted? No one is going to take these guys. We know that already. The Europeans have agreed to take a grand total of.. one. So if they’re acquitted, they’ll be turned loose in the US. That’s when someone will have a terrorist on his block. Surely you can see that?

And think about what happens if a released terrorist later commits another terrorist atrocity (which is very likely indeed). Americans will place a bounty on liberals, and quite rightly. So be careful what you wish for – you might get it. That’s why the Messiah is caviling on this issue – he doesn’t want to be on the hook for this.

1. For all Obama's sanctimonious prattling about closing Gitmo, he hasn't said very much AT ALL about what he intends to do with the prisoners there once it's closed, so it's understandable that we are a little nervous about it.
2. It has been said that Obama has desired for several Gitmo terrorists to not only be released into America, but also be given taxpayers' money to help support them!
