No, Chris, that was not more accepting (you mean acceptable) to the right wing. However, in the Arab world, hand holding between men is a sign of friendship, not romance. Bowing is submission, through and through. Americans bow to no royalty.
I roundly criticize the hand-holding; I am no Bush-bot. On the other hand, to spurn the king would have been a diplomatic disaster. Isn't diplomacy the be-all-and-end-all according to your messiah?
