Lech Walesa's Thank You Note to Ronaldus Maximus

A few years ago Lech Walesa, leader of the Solidarity movement that rebelled against communism in Poland, published a grateful editorial entitled "Remembering Reagan":

When talking about Ronald Reagan, I have to be personal. We in Poland took him so personally. Why? Because we owe him our liberty. This can't be said often enough by people who lived under oppression for half a century, until communism fell in 1989.
Poles fought for their freedom for so many years that they hold in special esteem those who backed them in their struggle. Support was the test of friendship. President Reagan was such a friend. His policy of aiding democratic movements in Central and Eastern Europe in the dark days of the Cold War meant a lot to us. We knew he believed in a few simple principles such as human rights, democracy and civil society. He was someone who was convinced that the citizen is not for the state, but vice-versa, and that freedom is an innate right.
I often wondered why Ronald Reagan did this, taking the risks he did, in supporting us at Solidarity, as well as dissident movements in other countries behind the Iron Curtain, while pushing a defense buildup that pushed the Soviet economy over the brink. Let's remember that it was a time of recession in the U.S. and a time when the American public was more interested in their own domestic affairs. It took a leader with a vision to convince them that there are greater things worth fighting for. …
I distinguish between two kinds of politicians. There are those who view politics as a tactical game, a game in which they do not reveal any individuality, in which they lose their own face. There are, however, leaders for whom politics is a means of defending and furthering values. For them, it is a moral pursuit. They do so because the values they cherish are endangered. They're convinced that there are values worth living for, and even values worth dying for. Otherwise they would consider their life and work pointless. Only such politicians are great politicians and Ronald Reagan was one of them. …
As I say repeatedly, we owe so much to all those who supported us. Perhaps in the early years, we didn't express enough gratitude. We were so busy introducing all the necessary economic and political reforms in our reborn country. Yet President Ronald Reagan must have realized what remarkable changes he brought to Poland, and indeed the rest of the world. And I hope he felt gratified. He should have.

What are the odds of a free Iranian writing something like this about Obama a couple decades down the road?

At least no one can accuse Chairman Zero of being one of those politicians who "lose their own face." His trendily pigmented face is all that matters — that, and CBS's discovery that his dog likes pumpkin-flavored ice cream.

No Ronald Reagan — to put it mildly.

On a tip from Edward.

Come on, VH! Don't you recognize journalistic greatness when you see it? I mean, inquiring minds want to know!

I've never sufficiently appreciated the legacy of Ronald Reagan, the last (so far?) great president. The appreciation of those who lived the nightmare puts it into perspective. I hope we don't have to learn their lesson the hard way, when it's so obvious, but this latest post turtle threatens everything we have.

The contrast with Obama couldn't be more stark. Obama isn't fit to carry Reagan's jockstrap.

Reagan is to BO like Mt. Rushmore is to mud.

Fiberal, I'd say as Mt. Rushmore is to a meadow muffin.

France is being led by market capitalist who champions freedom. The United States are being "led" by Neo-Marxist with a penchant for nationalization, spreading the (borrowed Chinese) wealth around, and pre-emptive surrender. How crazy is that?

"I am a blank screen." - BHO

What other quote most accurately describes this president? A blank screen has no values, it has no deep moral commitment. A blank screen is vacuous. A blank screen has no clarity, it offers no direction. A blank screen simply reflects; it is at once everything to everyone and nothing to everyone. It is meaningless and pointless...

...unless it is the leader of the free world...

A blank screen indicates no power.

A few Ronaldus Maximus quotes to ponder:

"Here's my strategy on the Cold War: We win, they lose."

“How do you tell a Communist?” Reagan asked in 1987. “Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.”

“The West won’t contain communism. It will transcend communism. It will dismiss it as some bizarre chapter in human history whose last pages are even now being written.” May 17, 1981

"What I am describing now is a plan and a hope for the long term; the march of freedom and democracy which will leave Marxism-Leninism on the ash-heap of history." June 8, 1982

"Let us pray for the salvation of all of those who live in that totalitarian darkness; pray they will discover the joy of knowing God. But until they do, let us be aware that while they preach the supremacy of the state, declare its omnipotence over individual man, and predict its eventual domination of all peoples on the earth, they are the focus of evil in the modern world." March 8, 1983

"Communism works only in heaven, where they don't need it, and in hell, where they've already got it." June 22, 1983

"My fellow Americans. I'm pleased to announce that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes." August 11, 1984

"That wall is an insult to the civilized world. I think it's time that we got mad and Mr. Gorbachev tried to get on our good side." Response to an aide who warned against making Gorbachev mad with the "tear down this wall" line.

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Hm, interesting that the American left would claim that Reagan had little if anything to do with the end of communism...

Guess all those damn rubes in Poland must be ignerant and unedumacated, and lack the nuance and gravitas which can only be obtained by having read several noam chomsky books.

you should thank nancy and her gypsy fortune-tellers, the ones who were really running things, instead of ronnie, who was too busy being senile in his spiral of terminal alzheimer's to have any say in anything.

Posted by: GMoney at June 23, 2009 6:12 AM

And yet even with his "senility" Ronaldus Maximus makes the Moonbat Messiah look like crap dropped from a tall cow's ass. Reagan stood up for the victims of oppression; Obama feeds his dog ice cream. I guess that is truly a case of "from each according to his abilities."

This clown president is a goats ass, and our government is goat feces.

GMoney maxes out his intellectual muscle with, "you should thank nancy and her gypsy fortune-tellers, the ones who were really running things, instead of ronnie, who was too busy being senile in his spiral of terminal alzheimer's to have any say in anything."

You really need to lay off the Kool-Aid, G......learn to f#cking punctuate and use capitals while you're at it.

BTW, it you want to sling mud at Mrs, Reagan regarding what you call "gypsy fortune tellers", please tell us what you base this on.

Others here know how that myth got started - do you? Please, impress us with more of your intellectual brilliance and superior knowledge of history and shed some light on this.

I certainly wish the Rupubs would get some morality with regards to cheating on their wives and destroying their children's faith in their dads. It sickens me. ..Only reason these philanderers are fessing up is because they've been had on many cellphone cameras.

TonyD95B-------sorry i haven't gotten back to you sooner. i was out hiking on the appalachian trail. well, a few simple words of truth really gets the base cranked up, especially when it runs counter to the myths and fairy tales spoon fed to them at bedtime by limbaugh/coulter/gingrich/cheney and of course their momma (hence the sensitivity to slinging mud at MRS. REAGAN!! how's that for caps, tony!!??). break out in a rash and start grabbing for their mla style guides. well, take a deep breath and calm yourself. maybe watch a couple of death valley days reruns. there there tony, it's ok, mommy loves you.
